    Sadly

    Toormore

wont be running in the Middleham Park Sky Blue colours by then, every chance Mr Dettori will ride him in the 2000gns.

One offer from Sheikh Joann has already been turned down.Personally I hope the partnership keep him. Was impressed by him in Ireland- not easy to make the running on that course in that wind. I think he will get more than a mile in time.

I really don’t see why jockeys need to be tested. Ok breathalysed, but why test for anything else. Not being funny, but why doesn’t anyone on here or in the BHA try keeping their natural body weight at around 40% what it should be. Then perform demanding sporting tasks. IT CAN’T BE DONE, and the horses doesn’t run faster by the way.

So the French should not have tested Dettori, for example?

Those horrible French also nailed Fallon. What was happening in the UK?

I also backed Talent – to win only at 14s – and think she was beaten fair and square. She’s obviously not an easy ride – doesn’t like to be surrounded by other horses especially early on in a race so think Crowley had no choice but to have her out the back. Talent looked the likely winner 3 out and although slightly impeded 2 out I got the feeling that the winner could have pulled out a bit more if needed late on.

Crowley certainly gave his mount plenty of ground to make up on rain softened ground.

However I agree that the winner (wears cheekpieces) appeared to be idling in front and could have pulled out more.

The racing fixture list has become so bloated that more than one newspaper don’t carry all the cards, citing "pressure for space" and "decisions made by the sports editor".

Whilst I’m sick of reading about football, football, football racing has become like dog racing and dog cards aren’t carried in the nationals.

Mosse not so good on Saturday in the G3 Superior Mile at York though. Tracked Hughes on the odds on fav Montiridge. Unfortunately Hughes’s mount wasn’t going and Mosse gave his mount to much to do in the ground.
I agree that there have been some bad flat rides this season. Hughes and Spencer overcomplicated things at Royal Ascot (Hughes at least had the good grace to own up and apologise). Spencer also gave his mount too much to do at Beverley Sat before last.
Moore tends to ride simpler races but admitted he should have won outright on Integral at Sandown.
Pundit Graham Cunningham has promised to highlight "bad rides"- let’s wait and see!

Lethal Force got bogged down in what bordered on soft going. Cox admitted trainer error and should not have run. Horse has already been sold as a stallion so owners already have their £.
Moore got off the winner so will be more miserable than ever.

People working within racing probably find not a lot of free time around major holidays as it is. Banishing their free time to those lost Mondays is not such a good deal if you are given to interacting with your family or the outside world.

I have absolutely no sympathy with that argument whatsoever – if you choose to work in the leisure industry, which is what racing is part of, then you have to work when required, if you don’t like the hours work somewhere else.

How about we shut down television and radio broadcasting on Good Friday so the staff can have time with their families? Television is not life or death – and the same arguments you make about staff in racing could apply to staff in other leisure industries, including broadcasting.

    Agree with this 100%.
Plenty of workers have to work on Good Friday- emergency services, airports, petrol stations etc.
The arguments against are from stable staff, jockeys and trainers saying they want a day off and also those responsible for the open days.
This is all self interest typical of racing’s inward looking self interested values. Has anyone asked owners whether they wish their horses to race on that day or the public whether they would come to watch or place a bet? Reality is that racing is meant to be in the entertainment business and should be staged when the public can go or place a bet. If participants can’t hack it then get out and get another job. There are 2 million plus who are out of work and will take their place and plenty arriving from Romania etc.
There is a surfeit of racing and bloated fixture list to a point where some national newspapers won’t print the cards. By all means cut it or have a blank replacement day e.g. a Monday.
The open days can be staged another day.
Anyone who wants to pray can either do so and miss the racing or pray then go racing.
The same spurious argument was put up against Sunday sporting events. We manage fine in the UK. Countries like Irealand and southern Europe are more religious and also manage.

    Brighton is terrific fun.
Started going again this summer after many years and will be there on Monday.
Sure the paddock and unsaddling etc is basic but some £ has been spent on updating facilities.
The razor gangs have gone but the seedy atmosphere in keeping with the City remains. You’ll see some interesting Brightonians!
    Staff are helpful. Enjoy it!

Good luck to Doyle, who is one of the up and comers making it difficult for over 40s like Fallon and Dettori. He is certainly flavour of the month and one of the media’s current darlings.
Fortunes have certainly turned for him . A few years ago he was on the verge of giving up, then he became known as just an AW jockey. Drowne’s virus gave him the opportunity to get the Charlton job and rides on Cityscape and Al Kazeem.
I’m not sure that we have seen the complete picture yet though. Seems odd that someone ( Abdulla back in Saudi) or his UK racing manager Grimthorpe suddenly wants a retained rider at a time when Abdullah is reportedly downsizing his interests. He managed happily without one for a few years after the arrangement with Hughes ceased.
Jockeys attached to a stable know the horse and its ability compared to others in the stable. Queally did fine on Frankel, Midday and Twice Over. Buick on Warsili.
In the short term Queally and Buick appear the main sufferers, Moore less so.However there may be more to this as there is speculation about the future of Warren Place i.e. does Cecil’s widow or assistant Marshall want to continue there?
While he will get on some good horses, Doyle will lose some patronage in that he will be going to places like Redcar for one ride on an Abdullah lesser light at reasonably short notice and missing books of rides in the south.

The reality is that in the UK there is no such thing as a soft Group 1 race.

An accumulation of Group 1 s on firm ground usually takes its toll.

Not impossible that we have seen the best of the likes of Toronado, Al Kazeem, Sky Lantern etc and it will be a struggle for them in the autumn as the ground softens

Toronado reported to be coughing after the race

    As were his backers!

Seems amazing that both Dawn Approach and Toronado have run badly next time and been diagnosed with a malaise in the immediate aftermath.

Roger Charlton has said in the aftermath of today’s race:-

"James (Doyle) never felt happy at any stage. He wanted to press Trading Leather more, and he couldn’t do it. He’s had three runs on firm ground and he was looking after himself, I think.

"You hope you can get away with it, but if you keep running a horse on firm ground when he prefers it softer, that’s what happens. Whether he goes for the Irish Champion Stakes or whatever, we’ll just see how he comes back."

After having stated earlier that they were not going to run him again on firm ground again before the Arc, you have to wonder what planet he is on.

Having been praised for the way he has been patient with the horse and looked after him, you now have to mark this down as a balls-up that could be seen coming before today. What is it with normally astute people that causes them to go against their own words and instincts?

My late Mother used to refer to it as Cerebral Dysentery, which when I quizzed her about the meaning she replied:-

"An unexplained, sudden rush of sh*t to the brain"

According to the guest racing pundit on Talksport this morning ( I can’t recall who it was) Charlton did not want to run the horse on firm ground again yesterday but was over-ruled by the owner- "owner pays the bills" etc etc, Same implication given in the RP analysis. Thus before crticising Charlton, suggest ask questions of the owner.

Hughes was hardly not once bitten twice shy as didn’t he go back to India this year or did I dream it?

Hughes DID ride in India this year but only in some of the top races:-

6 day ban meted out to Mulrennan;-

In the second incident from approaching the half furlong to the winning post, having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the race they found that MOVIESTA (USA) had interfered with SPIRIT QUARTZ (IRE), placed sixth, ridden by Jamie Spencer, and then with SWISS SPIRIT, placed second, ridden by William Buick, and that the interference had not affected MOVIESTA (USA)’s placing. They found Mulrennan in breach of Rule (B)54.1 and guilty of careless riding in that he had allowed his mount to drift continuously left away from the whip without taking corrective action. They suspended him for 6 days as follows: Friday 16, Saturday 17, Sunday 18, Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 August 2013.

I thought that the BHA had clamped down on late jockey substitutions?

On the day Callan, Kirby and Fallon were all permitted to be jocked off booked mounts for Dettori.

I realise that Dettori and John McCririck are the only two racing figures the general public have heard of, but is racing really that desperate to bend the rules for the Ascot PR man, pizza salesman and part time jockey?

Today is a beautiful summer’s day.

Surely a lost opportunity to put on some decent flat racing instead of centring it purely on Saturday afternoons when the top jockeys can only be at one meeting?

Ireland and France take a different approach and put on decent racing on Sundays.

The split makes sense for Walsh.
Nicholls srill has good horses but his top notchers are injured or retired. Cam’t see him taking the title back from Henderson for a while.
Walsh is 34 and had some bad falls over the last couple of seasons.
He can ride for the Mullins powerbase in Ireland and prolong his career.
Will be interesting how Jacob gets on. Nicholls and his owners are a demanding bunch and have hardly shown undying loyalty to stable jocks in the past.

What is the background to Mr Tinkler, the owner ?

As has been posted, Mr Tinkler is Chief executive of Eddie Stobart. The original Edward Stobart passed away recently and Tinkler now owns the company with a family member.
Tinkler is based in Cumbria and has a partner.
He is one of the leading lights hoping to resurrect Gt Leighs.
Used to have his horses with a multitude of trainers including Dods, Hannon and Carmody plus the likes of Cecil, Stoute and Haggas at Newmarket. Dispensed with his racing manager Tim Jones stating that he and his partner wanted to be more hands on , though it coincided with Jones causing embarrasmment by stating that it cost 30% more to have a horse trained in Newmarket.
Purchased 37 yearlings last year and now has 60 horses in training. Now also has brood mares for a breeding operation.Horses now appear centred with Hannon, Dods and Carmody- Murtagh. Used to have an informal relationship with Murtagh to ride when available.
Best horses have been Royal Diamond (won weak Irish G1), Barney McGrew (G3), Tell Dad (G3 and valuable sales races before being sold abroad) plus near misses in the Irish 2000 Guineas with Foxtrot Romeo and Dubawi Gold.
An up and comer in the owner/ breeding ranks.
