Yeah I did too after a couple of wide margin wins in very good times. Apparently he picked up an injury in the Champion Stakes though so maybe that wasn’t his true running (although have to say I swore very loudly at T Durcan that day!).

He looked group class to me so, when I was looking through the sire starts, I was a little surprised that he hadn’t picked up a g3 somewhere.

I think the key to him is the ground. He has twice hung on Good-Firm going and also suffered from sore shins and been bandaged in front, so give him a bit of juice and he’ll pick up I nice prize i’m sure.

Quote: from stevedvg on 2:36 pm on May 20, 2006[br]BTW, how can anyone say that Dubai Millennium was a dissapointing stallion? He had one crop to race, and had one top-class classic winner, and numerous other pattern-race performers…

I just had a quick look at the RP sire stats.

Apart from Dubawi, has he produced any horses that have won a group race in the UK, Ireland or France?

Nope, but I can give you the name of the next one to do so: Belenus.

Am I cynical in thinking that a large percentage of Dubai Millenium’s offspring were kept off the track when it was realised they weren’t up to much? Or if they did race, it was very infrequently and their careers were soon cut short when they had a victory to their name. Kydd Gloves being a case in point.

I can’t argue with that DJ. An example of poor placement last year was Bayeux. A miler as his limit I thought and yet they stepped him up in trip to 1m6f (I think) and even entered him in the Cesarewitch. Madness! And lo, did it come to pass that the horse left Godolphin for the masterful G Butler and was immediately dropped down to 6f…and has won twice.

I think it’s too early to write them off just yet and looking at their runners so far this season you can make out reasonable form cases as to why they have not been red hot. Deveron not liking the track, possibly the same for Gulf of Gold, Opera Cape not up to classic class, Palace Episode not having grown a millimetre over the winter apparently, Always Emirates running over an inadequate trip, Cherry Mix being a non-stayer, The Geezer being gross and needing the run, ground too soft for Portrayal, etc. Having said that, you would like to see a bit more from them on the whole, without neccesarily winning. I think wintering in Dubai (or the travelling at least) must take a bit out of the horses and I don’t think the 10-14 days that the Guineas meeting runners are given is long enough to get over it.

They have a few of their more interesting horses entered up this week (Reunite – entered in a 0-80 handicap on wednesday!, Sharpsburg, Librettist and With Interest) and I shall be watching closely. Cannot comment on their breeding programme as I know bugger all about it but I have to say that some of their purchases over the winter struck me as a little strange to say the least.

Just quickly to respond to a couple of earlier posts, Emirates to Dubai (and the other horses bearing the ‘Emirates’ name) were probably named due to the sponsorship of Godolphin by Emirates Airlines and maybe a tad more interesting than that, is the fact that Godolphin kept this seasons 2yo’s in Newmarket this winter and not Dubai.

All in all I like the Godolphin stable a great deal as you always get a run for your money, there is no attempt to manipulate a handicap mark, they are not a gambling stable and so their runners are often overpriced and they seem quite open with information on their horses. I’m sure they will come good.

    Nore,

In the 2.20 DEVERON may well be worth taking on at a skinny price (the RP forecast 13/8f). She has twice hung at Goodwood and not looked comfortable on the track. The distance is an unknown (was talked about by connections as a French Guineas possible earlier in the year) and didn’t show an awful lot on only start in Dubai this year. That said, she is officially rated 12lb superior to her nearest rival so may well win, but it’s not a betting proposition at that price.

Later in the 4.30 Godolphin run an unraced colt called Gulf of Gold. He was singled out by Simon Crisford as the one unraced horse of theirs to have shown some "sparkle" and holds an entry in the G1 St James Palace. Again price will dictate whether to have a bet or not but at least there are some fair animals in this race so may get a decent one.

For what it’s worth FSL, I totally agree with you. It’s only the O’Brien/Fallon factor keeping Sir Percy at longer odds. Reverse the trainers and you know what the likely price difference would be! Sir Percy is the value (to beat GW anyway). Wonder if I can find a match bet anywhere?

It’s a mixture of both for me also.

I enjoy the research side of things and gaining knowledge that may give me that important edge over other punters. It’s very time consuming, but enjoyable nonetheless and has turned around my indisciplined betting past. Also keep a spreadsheet of bets and this helps enormously, highlighting areas where I have been particularly Jade Goody. The money aspect is definitely the top priority though – if I was losing too heavily I would give it up!

I can’t say I get get a particular pleasure from watching some horses run around a track for a bit unless I have a financial interest, or the race is important for my research and really can’t see how anyone could derive pleasure from watching knackered horses at the end of a three mile chase in the mud getting the full treatment from a Jockey, just for viewing ‘pleasure’.

I think Wistman will definitely pop up somewhere at a nice price. The trouble being catching him at the right time! Has been slowly away from the gate in half his races, has pulled hard in a couple and seems to go best with some juice in the ground. Watched him quite closely on friday (was again very slowly away) and he was not really asked a question when he couldn’t get a run around the 3 pole. If he learns to trap better he should win a race or two.

He is in training in Dubai with Godolphin at the moment so I guess they must’ve kept an eye on your talking him up in this forum!

Double Silk for me. Probably the best jumper of a fence I have ever seen and he even managed to excel with the handicap of Mr Ron Treloggan on his back. Won a couple of Foxhunters at Cheltenham where he was foot perfect and particularly remember the first of those where he seemed to gain a length at every fence. Ironically fell in the National when nearly favourite – not bad for a Hunter Chaser.

Also fond memories of Dizzy, Hever Golf Rose, Lochsong and more recently Librettist. Hope we’ll see him again but somehow I doubt it now as he has suffered leg problems but he would’ve been top-class!

    SHELHOM has been gelded.

SEABOW is one of the darker horses I like for what it’s worth (probably not much!).
