Hi there, in a bit of a rush but will scan through this properly later on, so apologies if its already been brought up,

A pointer towards the WEIGHTS of horses, The old saying is that a 3lb claim is a length over a mile, so for example if a horse runs a mile handicap rated 83.. and gets beat a length… say he then gets dropped 3lb to a rating of 80, and then a 3lb claimer rides it next time, hes effectivley rated 6lb better than last time, and if everything goes to plan, will be 2lengths better off over a mile next time… that being said dont rely on claimers!

or in another case, a horse wins over a mile by 1ength rated 80… and the horse that came 2nd was rated 80 also.. if the winner gets put up 6lb and the 2nd horse does not, if they run again over a mile.. the winner is effectively 2 lengths worse of if the 2 horses run again!

but obv different factors come into play with track, jockey, conditions and many more!

But that is the theory for weights, at the end of they day, Weight will stop any horse! this is just a round figured example!

    Good luck

for future ref, i searched frankel into the racing post website, found the date of the 2000 guineas (30 april) then went on the results page of the racing post, found thirsk, and it ran in the 2nd race, the horses name is The Fun Crusher, so couldnt find it without the "the"

Its trained by tim easterby, was ridden by robert winston..

If you wanted info about it, it is a halling chestnut gelding, cost 10,000

I find hallings usually like a bit of give in the ground but it won on good that day, Here is the Racingpost link:

At the end of the day we dont need 13 bookies in newmarket, they are only here to cancel eachother out, for example ladbrokes have 4 shops in a town of 20,000? and the bookies dont all make profit in newmarket which is fact… William hill outside the market square made under £20,000 profit last year, and the only reason they stayed open is becase of the fruit machines! as for the bookies providing a service, Dont call it a service… Its not a service…

And as for people enjoying a bet whether it wins or loses you obviously dont visit newmarket very often!

To be completely honest putting my opinion on the state of newmarket to one side, my real problem lies deep within racing, Bookies dont pay anything back into the sport, end of.

I think its time the (sorry for the language) Fuc***g Idiots at the top to say "this is our sport, if you want to bet on it, pay us" unfortunately most of the people with the decisions own shares in betting companies!

Johnny Owen (64 to 95 + 31lbs) is the most hiked Hurdler this week as per the offical ratings.

This one seems to have had some sort of religious conversion.

Five rubbish outings in 2011. This year 2 wins – not the same animal ?

Entered at Fontwell and Catterick tomorrow. If decided to run would have to shoulder 14lb extra for either engagement but would still be ahead of revised ratings.

    What i cant understand is his prices… 2011 prices, 9/2 50/1 200/1 66/1 66/1…

2012 prices 7/2 1/2 (OPENED UP! NOT GAMBLED!)

I completely agree with both, and yes the old "i rode this one this morning its a machine"… did you ride the other 24 in this race then? and yes they are elected by the local residents, but when your surrounded by idiots and only idiots decide to elect themselves for election.. what can you do? Its the bookies taking money from racing, and the historic town council is allowing the bookies to do it, taking money from your own town is rediculous, then when ascot take champions day away, they are first to complain, idiots.

I lived with charlies son sean until recently (about 2 months ago) when charlie bought a new house in newmarket with a yard attached so it only made sense to sell the house for him to move home (also he is saving to start training) i was told by sean that this was a horse to watch for them, but he never really got his breaks, i remember watching him work as a 2yo with blue maiden who ran in the guineas, he worked well but never got it onto the track properly, I went to the yard a month or so ago to see sean and blue destination was still there having been sold, and if it helps at all he looked very well in himself, and i think this sort of race could bring the best out in him, Best of luck Lee.

OA/GC, I can hum the end credit music from the early 80’s, it’s still lodged in my brain……….unfortunately it won’t translate too well on here.

I think everyone on this thread will feel deeply hard done by if you dont at least give it a go Venture :)

    Can’t find any racing footage using "Garden Party" right now, but here’s the promo video for its single release;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmSDTutGyIw

A number 17 hit back in 1983, before it was used to accompany the horse-bothering, and I do remember them performing it on the Top Of The Pops once. You know, the Top Of The Pops that they have now. With the rap singers. The rap singers on the Top Of The Pops. Rapping about sausages and wool. On the Top Of The Pops. With the rap singers, etc.**

Notably, Mezzoforte were (and as they’re still going, are) Icelandic, which I presume could make "Garden Party" the first big British chart hit to emanate from that country. It certainly predates The Sugarcubes’ first top 40 hit by nine years, Bjork’s by a little more, and Sigur Ros’s by over 20 years.

Don’t look at me like that. This stuff wins quizzes. 8)

    gc

** With apologies to Stewart Lee

Remind me to give you a call when i next enter a pub quiz!

    Hi Lee,

I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days at Manton during the John Gosden years when Oasis Dream was stabled there. It was King George weekend so a couple of weeks after his July Cup win.

OD was the most perfect racing specimen. He only did light exercise that morning but hangover or otherwise me and my mate were up with the larks to see him and the rest of the string work. Manton on a sunny July morning – is there a better place on earth!

The yard were devastated when he got beat in his first 2 starts as a 2yo. They thought he was a machine and time proved them to be spot on.

He’s also been a fantastic success at stud and I can appreciate why he’s your fav sire.

    Cheers,
    Neil

Well thats fantastic! i love waking up at 6am on a crisp summers morning, going over to the gallops to see the horses work, its such a lovely sight, poetry in motion how an animal the size of a cow can run without effort at 40mph+ and yes hes been a success at stud! I would love to see K Abdhulla send a few more 1m4f mares to him.. with the speed to win the guineas and stamina for the derby, Brilliance.

And its these reasons i went online, it frustrates me to the core when the "radio show" give punters tips… why would ladbrokes want to give you a winner, when they say "at 6/1 hes my bet for this race, he will go well" they actually mean "at 6/1 im going to lay the Bol****s off him because he has about as much chance a snowball in hell"

You get 1 racing post to share if your lucky, (and in newmarket somebody has normally stolen it)

Dont get me started on virtuals, if youur going to bet on a virtual race you deserve everything you get! Racing is unpredictable as it is… if it was my bookies and someone had £100,000 on "number 6" i would sure as hell make that miss the break!

one thing that really annoys me, seriously annoys me, its only petty but its punters who throw their betting slips on the floor if they get beat, Firstly if you cant hack losing, dont bet, and secondly i have worked in a supermarket before when i left school, and saw people just throwing rubbish that I!! had to pick up, and if i worked in these bookies they would be picking it back or, or leaving quickly either via the door or the window.. no respect.

although you can still get a few nice touches in there, when i see people going in there with full blue "godolphin" work gear on, putting their whole weeks wages on a godolphin maiden horse first time out (mosty likely before they have even payed their rent) its time to GET ON at 6/1!

Bookies just take take take and at the end of the day, betting online is so competitive you get better offers, better odds, and from the convinience of your home!

With completely agreeing on your opinion, I would also like to add that no matter what the name, the money all goes into the same pot… the bookies pot

Make the most of your grandad while you still have him – they are irreplacable!

The sad story not intentional but i dont really know my dad, so my grandad and uncle were always the male role models for me, my grandad being the closest, hes the kind of man that would give you his last pound, drink once a year at christmas and be drunk by dinner time, telling jokes forgetting them half way through, and buys your grandma a dishwasher and a fruit blender for christmas!

He also knows more about horse racing than anyone i have ever met! He truely is a Legend and i will certainly be making the most of him whiles hes around!

Leeknowles1 I thought you were talking about the Good Old Days, that was only a few years ago.

This was the daddy of Grandstand theme tunes when racing was the lynchpin of the programme.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FUdpqLLxPM

Never liked that Odissea Veneziana tune, always sounded a bit of a dirge to me, much preferred the one prior to that, it was only used for 2 or 3 years and was accompanied by pictures that included a bookies trilby being blown off. Anyone know what it was?

    PS
Agree with graysonscolumn about those who have allowed Tellwright to ruin Haydock’s fences

Yes thats exactly what i meant! However i meant it in the sense that since those days around 1996 – 2007 (when i can remember watching racing) it was not completely going down the pan, towards 2007 it was going backwards, but In my humble opinion, its completely lost now with the tote being sold to the bookies, hefty bans etc..

Here is just a quick intro to our New Filly by Exceed and Excell, she is currently being named (We have applied to whetherbys for permission on the name "Salford Excell") This was the day after we bought her at tattersalls, she has got alot bigger and stronger since and when we next go to see her i will get an updated picture, marco is happy with her and she looks in his words "very racey" she looks as though good-firm will be her ideal ground range but she is only cantering at the moment so time will tell!!

She’s awfully pretty Lee (love to see a head pic), but she’s a beefy little thing isn’t she? And you say she’s got bigger and stronger since that pic?

Exactly how old, in months, was she in that photo?

Okay i will try to remember to get a head photo, and she is an april foal, so in that photo (october after the sales) she was around 19 months, 1year 7 months, she looks like an average size colt IMO, i just hope she has an engine!

I lived with my mate Sean Mcbride for a while, his dad trains horses and one he bred who never raced was 18hands, He was an absolute battle tank, i rememeber sean going up the newmarkets cambridge road gallops with potential owners watching this horse, he couldnt get the bloody thing out of a cant, he pushed he shoved he kicked, he used his whip.. and at a slow gallop he started to hang badly right onto the grass, needless to say he was not in the yard for very long!

    You could be onto something!

    Good luck

    Welcome Lee,

It is a shame that Salford Mill’s name has been wiped from the records of the Racing Post. Comes up as Helene Mascot, even for the Derby.

I once went on a stable visit to David Elsworth’s at Whitsbury. Where I got bitten by Salford City! My own fault. Still had the bruise three weeks later.

My mother went to the village school with David Elsworth. I say school, it was one classroom with less than 20 kids. I believe he then moved to Ludgershall and went on to Tidworth School at the same time as Richard Hannon?

My father was at Great Shefford at the time Lester was there.

Heres something that might interest you ginger, was speaking to elsie about his horses hes had through his hands, and asked him about where he got the name idea from one of his horses and he replied "it was named after a girl i went to school with"

If you dont mind me asking what is your mothers name?
