Following today’s gaffe, it seems incredible that Gordon B. has allowed himself to be surrounded by aides who seem incapable or possibly culpable in being unable to remove the microphone he was wearing. Isn’t it precisely their job to ensure that there are no stupid mistakes whilst out campaigning? Did no one vet the labour stalwart and realise that she was of a generation when the thorny question of ‘immigration’ was now likely to be an issue and problematic for Brown?
April 28, 2010 at 13:41 in reply to: Daylight Cup Quarter Final Draw & TRF Quiz Night – Wednesday #292943Nathan, who’s your money on to be the eventual winner? I reckon there’s not a lot in it, they’re all in with a decent shout and so were you until you let the cat out of the bag about piggy-backing.
April 28, 2010 at 13:12 in reply to: Daylight Cup Quarter Final Draw & TRF Quiz Night – Wednesday #292939That’s a shame. I had visions of me boasting that I lost the quiz competition by the narrowest of margins and right on the final question.
And there was I thinking that Jinny J spent weeks studiously pouring over horse racing encyclopedias to eventually come up with the one definitive question of all time.
As for Nathan’s comment. What do you expect old boy? If you don’t come up with the dosh then don’t be surprised to receive the Kenny cosh. Same goes for Aaronizeez and Jimjts, both short favourites but they failed to deliver the cash so I had no option but to ditch them good style. I don’t want other TRF’ers thinking I’m a softee now, do I? You mess with me and you end up a mess in hospital. Comprenez vous?

Sorted now thanks Sean. Seems your database not happy with using brackets in my user name. Without brackets went through smoothly.
Cheers
KenCambsSean, problem with Registering remains. When I click ‘Register’ the next page asks for a Username (so I type in Ken(Cambs) and in the box below my Email address where it then says an Email will be sent to me. I then click Register and a screen appears saying this user name is invalid. I’m using Google Chrome.
Any idea where I’m going wrong please?
Cheers
KenApril 27, 2010 at 12:48 in reply to: Daylight Cup Quarter Final Draw & TRF Quiz Night – Wednesday #292762I will stake my reputation on someone with a name beginning with the letter ‘M’ for money reaching the semi-finals. In fact I’m so confident that, if I am proven wrong, I will send five pounds to everyone who enters tonight’s quiz competition.
KenJoncol wrote…The lad made the same mistake 3 times in 1 year, you do that in your job, good chance you will get fired.
And maybe TRF should ban any TRF’er who writes through his backside on more than two occasions. Joncol, I really wonder how you have acquired such rare wisdom about horse racing when from what I’ve read from your threads and posts you appear to lack the expertise to be anything other than an armchair critic with little or no clue as to the realities of the game. Why do you waste your time on this forum when you’ve boasted about how easy you find it to make money betting on other sports? Which are?
… that the horse has had enough…
Not my words but Sean Boyce earlier in this thread. You can bet your bottom dollar that Sean’s money was not on Twist Magic to win today.
So does this mean that if I come up with a rigid laying system whereby I focus on just one particular jockey because I’ve heard that his style of riding is weak in a tight finish, and my theory is proven correct, resulting in me winning regularly to the extent that Messrs. Betfair will report me to the BHA and, if by chance I have a relative who worked/works in the said jockey’s yard and I refuse to co-operate with a kangaroo court, I’m automatically warned off? Doesn’t seem a fair judicial process IMO. Sounds to me as if Betfair only approve of consistent losers.
Has the BHA published an account of this event? This is a typical example of how class-ridden racing is. Blame the jockey because he has form. Blame the flagman because he works there for beer money for just a few hours once a blue moon. But, whatever happens, don’t blame the Clerk of the Course, the Stewards or the racing authorities.
These sorts of events should be regularly rehearsed and ground workers should be adequately trained in acting decisively in any given scenario. Every ground worker should be properly equipped with radio communications linked directly to the Clerk of the Course who should be the sole person responsible for issuing immediate instructions as to what actions need to be taken. Given the apparent confusion both on and off-course which appears to have been created by this event and the fact that people could potentially be at risk of severe injury if hit by a ‘confused’ jockey’s horse should the BHA take a good hard look at their Instructions to Courses manual, Policies and Procedures etc? It just strikes me that sometimes reactions to situations are done on a ‘wing and a prayer’ instead of in accordance with procedures set in stone. Does every Course have a designated Health and Safety officer, not just in name but by profession. One of these days another Danny Cook is going to do precisely the same thing but proceed to mow someone down with potentially fatal consequences. Get it sorted BHA instead of using the blame-game card.
There’s another aspect to this i.e. the fact that, unlike many other sports many jockeys are free-lance and do not enjoy the same employer employee relationship that most workers do in relation to on-going training and disciplinary matters. Whereas the footballer can receive sanctions handed down by the football authorities plus his own club, when it comes to racing we never hear of trainers taking disciplinary action against jockeys, do we? How often are jockeys sent on refresher courses and re-acquainted with the rules?Joncol wrote..Much easier sports to make money on
Please enlighten me Joncol. What exactly do you find more profitable than the horses please, and how? Thanks. If I can make money easier than on the horses that’ll do for me.
KJoncol, You seem surprised by the favourite being beaten in the first at Wolverhampton. The fact that this was an apprentice race surely only the truly desperate would consider this an attractive betting proposition. I can even think of a few compulsive gamblers who would rather bet on the favourite at Steepledowns than an all weather apprentice race.
XXX years ago I experienced my first odds-on shot losing, Rondetto at something like 8/100. I didn’t back it but I tell you what, my friend was bereft because it was the banker in his sixpence each way yankee bet.
In the intervening years since I’ve probably only ever backed one odds-on and even that got beat. My philosophy now is…for every pound of my own money I’m prepared to gamble I intend to get at the very least two pounds in return. If you worked for one hour but only received pay equivalent to 30 minutes would you be happy? Certainly not. So why bother backing odds on shots and be working for the bookie for nothing? And many thanks from me, Richard and Al. Really appreciate the ‘inside’ story and it certainly helps in getting a greater affinity with things from a jockey’ perspective.
KFryern wrote..Some of you claim you are actually making money out of it by betting against ‘dodgy’ starters!
Not necessarily true, Fryern. Over the years I’ve had some nice touches on horses with a reputation for not starting or starting slowly or left in the stalls. My willingness to take a chance that I’ll get a decent run out of them has, to a large extent, been persuaded by what I perceive to be more generous odds in comparison with their true ability minus quirks. When they do bring home the bacon it’s been very satisfying knowing that my faith/intuition has been rewarded.
If the rules are to be changed in respect of horses then surely it’s only a matter of time before greyhound punters start demanding their stakes be refunded in respect of dogs turned the wrong way round when the traps open or stumbling and losing all chance at the start. You pays your money you takes your chance.
When KJC was left at the start I just shrugged my shoulders and thought "There’s always next year" You’ve just got to be philosophical about these things, some you win, some you lose.
What would be interesting to know though is whether or not, upon seeing a horse with history playing up at the start, bookmakers automatically shorten up the prices on others in the race. That would be unfair.Deliver us from evil…and may the Lord make us truly thankful for Dangerous Dave.
Interestingly, O’Regan not up on any of Howard Johnson’s horses today. Stable using Renwick, Hughes and Mania.Could the latter be in line as the new first choice stable jockey?
