Nice to see you wielding a satchel today – first time I’ve ever seen you without a tie! – and I hope you had a good day here at the sandpit.
Were you filming something for ATR? Doing a Justin Lee Collins? Or are you leaving the booth to Chappers?

Cheers
Max

Collecting his winnings, perhaps?
Going into the bookmaking business?
April 6, 2010 at 18:22 #288003He was taking bets on the Barry Johnson joint, Ken.
I didn’t know he was a bookmaker or had bookmaker connections, but there he was!
April 6, 2010 at 18:33 #288009…..(2007 article)..Barry Johnson, also 58, recently spent £1.25m to buy 34 pitches in the south and midlands. "I didn’t win the lottery," he said. "I earned this money in business throughout my life.
Must have recouped it by now because Boycie doesn’t come cheap, by anyone’s standards..
April 6, 2010 at 18:48 #288014There"s a "Max/Boyce" Joke here somewhere!
April 6, 2010 at 19:44 #288034There certainly is, Gordon.
BTW, about time both you and Ken got yourselves up the A38 isn’t it?

Lots of NH coming up.
April 6, 2010 at 19:55 #288037I was up the A4071 on Saturday, Ebaying. One and only bidder at 99pence saving myself a couple of hundred. Felt sorry for the guy who failed to put up a reserve price.
The A38? What’s there, Max? The back of beyond.
I’m based midway Newmarket, Huntington and Cottenham these days. I prefer the gentler life now that I’m a country squire.

April 7, 2010 at 11:40 #288230You should have come and said hello!
I was up there for my own website. I haven’t spoken with anyone at TRF about whether it can be mentioned on here, might be spamming, so I won’t plug the URL, although hopefully there’s no conflict at all between this excellent forum and what I’m doing with my blog.
I’ve set up a blog so that I can write in a bit more detail than the TV allows about things I’m interested in. I’ll cover all the big racing stuff – plenty of National stuff up there at the moment – but I want to look at aspects of the industry in more detail.
The betting ring has changed a hell of a lot since I first started betting, so I went and spent a day with Ben Johnson at Southwell yesterday to see what a standard ‘day at the office’ is like for an on course bookie.
So, in a week or so, when I find time to write up the hours of audio I’ve recorded there’ll be a nice feature which hopefully people will enjoy reading but will also explain what the actual facts and figures, and nuts and bolts are.
I’ll be doing the same with other parts of the business, spending time with other people who work in different parts of the game to try and put together a bit of a jigsaw of interviews and features which will give us all something to talk about I hope and also increase our understanding of how it all works.
Really enjoyed my day yesterday, was actually pretty tired by the time I got back home (not used to standing up all day, most people don’t know that I even have legs!). Ben and Mandy and Carl were great and it was a real eye opener in lots of ways. Should make a good piece and provide plenty to talk about.April 7, 2010 at 11:46 #288232ps- it’s actually about 20 years I reckon since I was last at Southwell!
I’ll try not to leave it so long next time as it was enjoyable, nice relaxed banter in the ring, decent facilities and really nice staff.April 7, 2010 at 12:12 #288243Anyone that wants to find Sean’s blog should be able to do so if the google boycies betting blog. Looks very interesting.
April 7, 2010 at 12:13 #288244Is this Sean Boyce of ATR fame?

Pleasure
April 7, 2010 at 12:14 #288246That blog sounds interesting, Sean, will have a look for it now.
Good luck and thanks.

April 7, 2010 at 12:16 #288247Cormack has kindly informed me that I can add it to my signature which will save any detective work. It’s only just started so the content will build day by day and week by week but i’d love any feedback.
Cheers
BoycieApril 7, 2010 at 12:18 #288249Looks a very smooth looking website.
Now all you have to do is pick 33/1 Early morning price winners like Hugh Taylor.
How does the man do it? and does he drive a different car into ATR TOWERS every time he is on?

April 7, 2010 at 12:45 #288261Thanks for that Mr W, appreciate it. You’re abosolutely right of course, it’s a bit of a labour of love and you’re right keeping it fresh will eat up the hours but keeps me busy and I’m enjoying it so far.
