If that’s the case, then perhaps it’s time to say my farewells.
Cheers
KenPut yourself in (edited) shoes for a moment. Do you really think he’s going to risk his ‘hard-earned’ cash betting on a horse trained by another person? Would you have so much faith in another trainer’s ability to bring a horse back from the dead after a two year lay-off and be confident that it was going to win? If it was me, I’d be doing my own training right up to the last minute and just transfer the horse from my horse box into (edited) on the way to the races. Which is why, on another thread I suggested the BHA should be checking phone records because if the horse in question was not actually trained by (edited) on his premises then it makes a mockery of the licensing and registration rules.
(Edits) to avoid libel writs – see Corm and Matron.
That makes sense AP. Maybe he was layer in the second division which would explain a somewhat lacklustre performance.
It would seem that Racing For Change, the BHA, the race-fixing investigators, the Integrity Panels etc. etc. should all be made obsolete. What hope is there for a clean and sterile sport unadulterated by race-fixing and double-dealing when even half the punters (judging from this thread alone) seem to approve of this underhanded and sordid affair? I suppose the best thing would be to abandon all ambitions for things to be above-board and just let anarchy and corruption have free reign. At least then we would all know where we stand and could decide whether to continue to support horse racing or seek pastures new.
"Sorry, y’er Honour, but I can’t afford to pay these damages and costs ‘cos I lost all me dosh backing the non-triers from those illustrious gents across the Court."
"Well, in that case, Mr. Ken, you’ve afforded me no option but to send you to the debtors prison alongside the likes of all those other TRF’ers. Let that be a lesson to you."
As far as censoring my posts Corm and Matron. Whilst I may have subsequently re-phrased my original post because I couldn’t remember exactly what I’d written, I stand by exactly what I wrote and it’s a matter of opinion as to whether it could be described as defamatory. I think not.
I always take care in my postings to avoid libelling anyone even though I’m still waiting to hear from Nathan Hughes’ solicitors since I revealed the dark goings-on in his Escort Agency. It’s not my fault if he took it the wrong way…how was I to know he didn’t have a fleet of Ford motors.
KWhy the need for censorship of my earlier post please guys? I only suggested that the BHA should examine the bank accounts of Curley and the phone records of him, Grant and O’Regan.
At the same time I asked whether the BHA had quizzed Howard J. on the origins of the £20K he was recently reported having had stolen?
Doesn’t the BHA have a statutory duty to investigate large cash holdings to ensure there has been no impropriety e.g. money laundering? Not that I’m suggesting Howard J. is anything other than completely above board and a model citizen.
Floating around perfectly reasonable opinions/questions should not warrant TRF censorship, or should it?
KSorry, Max. I have to take issue with your post above. Fist never struck me as someone who does jogging.
KFist wrote..The alternative is……Barney Curely stopped 3 horses for months if not years and in a master plan sent another horse he really owns, in someone elses name, oto Chris Grant and told him to have the horse ready to win on the 10th of May 2010 at which time he would have 3 horses ready to win…
…and the other alternative is that the horse was prepared by Curley and only went to Grant at the eleventh hour..???
APK wrote…The very name Barney Curley has alarm bells attached to it,today there must have been a fault on the sensor!
When it comes to Curley, I tend to think that most of us have been lulled into a false sense of security in that from my limited observations it just seems like light years since I was last aware of his massively successful punts. For probably months, maybe a couple of years or more I’d be on the lookout for a dramatic market move. But then as time wore on and I became less aware of him having spectacular winners I began to think of him in terms of just a run of the mill insignificant sort of trainer, giving scant regard to any of his runners. I’m sure many others fail to regard him as a "good" trainer of horses. Obviously I was wrong and the man has a touch of magic about him. Either that or he is your ultimate con artist.
Henceforth there’s another aspect to this. Poor Joe Punter can expect the future odds about Curley’s runners to be squeezed by the bookies fearing another ‘coup’ and therefore even if they win we will be getting less value for money than had today not have happened.BHL,
Had you done a treble on Saturday and let’s just say you’d included Chelsea as your banker. Would you be a bit miffed if Terry had scored five own goals and Drogba had gone off injured after five minutes but subsequently you heard that the whole Chelsea Team had won thousands backing a five all draw?
The point I’m trying to make is that poor Joe punter may very well have previously lost money on today’s horses not knowing that they were under-achieving because they were being saved for the stable’s connections to land a big touch. Is that the kind of environment that is going to convince people that racing is clean? I think not.
By all means hammer the bookies but it has to be a level playing field for all punters not just the likes of Curly Wurly and Co.I hate to be a killjoy and part of me loves these betting coups. However, today’s events raise serious questions about whether or not these horses have been running on their true merits previously. I notice that in the distant past the Towcester horse was a losing 9/4 favourite in one race but subsequently its form tailed off and it ran almost last at big prices on its last couple of visits to Towcester.
Are these the sort of situations that the BHA’s Integrity Department should be investigating?Am I correct in thinking that Mark Johnston is a qualified vet and therefore must have a significant edge on most trainers?
‘Tis good to see the urban myth that he is,
back to a rock and a hard place.
His visual sound waves have been conspicuous by their rationing of late.
Welcome to the home of the brave, Gamble.
KLet’s face it, she’s been on the scene for eight years now with barely a handful of winning rides and from what I’ve seen of her she just ain’t up to the mark in terms of style or strength. Perhaps her time-out might help her to focus on whether her ‘skills’ might be more usefully served in a non-racing capacity.
If, as some suggest, she is riding to ‘questionable’ orders then the fact that the Stewards now have her in their sights is only likely to make her a less attractive proposition as a ‘job’ jockey.
I wonder if her ‘health’ explanation will have been received sympathetically by other female jockeys or might they think she’s played the inequality card to their detriment?Ken’s thread 10th January 2009 entitled PMT…….
At the risk of being accused of chauvinism, I appreciate this is a delicate subject, but has anyone done any stats. on female jockeys to eradicate the myth or otherwise that their monthly cycle interferes with their riding abilities?
I vividly recall a recent ATR interview with a certain well-known female jockey and thinking at the time that it might be an idea to give her mounts a bit of a swerve for a few days. And so it proved.I got a bit of a rollocking at the time but now we have it straight from the horse’s mouth. Either that or she’s been reading my posts.
Having once upon a time been married to and on the receiving end from someone who suffered quite badly with PMT I can assure readers that there’s far more to it than just pains. It disrupts the co-ordination, thinking responses, moods etc., hence my thread above and without prying into a female jockey’s intimate history I think it’s important to bear in mind that this is an additional risk factor when you back a female jockey’s mount. On the other hand, there is also another time in the cycle when they are in the peak of condition and definitely worth following.
Very difficult subject to discuss but I do believe it’s a fact of life and worthy of consideration and some debate within the BHA and disciplinary panels.Ken
Joncol, please, please end this masochism now. Some of the logic behind your statements is becoming painful to read.
The stewards deal in facts, not hearsay. It was Murtagh who said Fame and Glory was tired. Until such time as horses can speak for themselves it would be unfair to punish them on the basis of a jockey’s opinion. For all we know, Fame and Glory might have a completely different story to tell.
KenJoncol wrote… Boycey do me a favour and remember your very first day in work, in fact everyone do it there for a minute.
I’m surprised, Joncol. Thought you would have been the first to know that Sean was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has never had to do a day’s work in his life. His time spent at ATR is purely on a voluntary basis and just his humble way of giving back to the community.
As for your obvious compassion towards amateur riders. I have to disagree with you. The whole purpose of having a strict qualifying entry point into obtain an amateur riding permit, e.g. having accomplished a certain number of placed rides/undertaken 4 days training/references/medical is to ensure that the individual has at least a modicum of ability.
I doubt whether she will be twiddling her thumbs for six months as there are plenty of other riding opportunities to brush up on her technique and acquire the necessary strength to finish off her races in a competent fashion. She will return wiser and stronger and more determined than ever to succeed. So fear not Joncol, it’s not as bad as it seems.
