I am first and foremost a punter, so my only allegiance is to the horse I have backed.
But as, to a much lesser extent, a racing fan, I am interested in the actual horses, not their owners, trainers or country of origin.
Gaelic Warrior is a wonderful horse, I am a complete convert, a son of Prix Du Moulin winner Maxios out of a Hernando mare.
Ballyburn is a brilliant son of Flemensfirth out of an Old Vic mare.
Two exceptional novices – who cares that the same bloke trains them in another country?
Not me.
This isn’t a “crisis” – a bunch of rich owners with horses at British yards being beaten by a bunch of rich owners with horses at Irish yards is about as much of a crisis as them temporarily running out of strawberries at Wimbledon.
And gone are the days when Irish form was shrouded in mystery – the Irish racing is all broadcast to Britain nowadays.
Great racing so far this week.

I would suggest you could say this of the winners of many contests, today’s Arkle included, and that’s a Grade 1.
A subsequent Grand National third won this race last year and I think Corbett’s Cross will take even higher rank.
And I’d have the third on my mind for a Welsh National if the BHA leave him on 132.

I didn’t think it was a vintage Supreme, but I did think Gaelic Warrior was an exceptional Arkle winner.
State Man doesn’t do more than he has to and won the Champion Hurdle more easily than the margin suggests, but I’d say it was only the third-best performance on the card (Corbett’s Cross bolted in later on) and the fourth-best visually (Lossiemouth different gear to that lot in the Mares’ Hurdle).
I really enjoyed it but, as oft stated, not having my senses polluted by the sound of the racing media helps a lot.
