Lossiemouth is 3The problem we have is if Henderson is firing we’d wouldn’t as a whole want him winning (I don’t mind him winning)
and Mullins winning is boring (I don’t find it boring)We want the small trainers to win but the probability is they are small trainers for a reasons
When Elliot started winning that was great but he soon sort of took over and we didn’t like it (as a whole)
We like things just to not like things…

March 13, 2024 at 07:43 #1685186I don’t find it in the slightest bit boring – he runs all his good horses frequently and often against one another.

March 13, 2024 at 14:17 #1685386The kind of person that takes enjoyment from watching one stable utterly dominate the UKs premier race meeting is the type who currently likes watching F1. Might as well build a racecourse at Closutton and save on the travel costs.
March 13, 2024 at 15:12 #1685435That’s a good comparison , it’s not Mullins fault though , his accountant must be doing plenty ot to

March 14, 2024 at 07:29 #1685692If I was a British trainer, I think I would give up on Cheltenham now. How are they going to compete with the Irish (in particular Mullins) juggernaut?
I think some trainers are giving up. Nicholls seems more focused on Aintree, as does Skelton to an extent. Aside from Aintree, there are plenty of good prizes to be won at Ayr, Perth, Sandown and Cheltenham in April. It would make more sense to target those races.
Take Ben Pauling as an example. I don’t think anyone thought his horse Handstands would win yesterday but he had won well at Huntingdon. He ended up finishing legless. It turns out Mullins has 5 horses in his own yard that are better at the distance, probably more like 8 when the Albert Bartlett horses are taken into consideration.
Pauling must be wondering if there was any point giving the horse such a hard race for no reward. It would have been better to have waited for something else. He won a nice prize with Personal Ambition at Kelso earlier in the month, which looks like a better strategy.
I reckon some British trainers will start to think there is no point trying to compete and they may as well leave the stage clear for Mullins and co.
March 14, 2024 at 07:50 #1685700If they did that then there’s no point to the festival , as it’s already been said the horses are bought in the open market , it’s up to the other trainers to spot what Mullins is , Nicholls and Henderson are more than capable of taking on Mullins with the right ammo

March 14, 2024 at 07:58 #1685706Agree HDLG but they just don’t seem capable of doing it and most of the big spending owners, including British owners, want their horses trained in Ireland now.
March 14, 2024 at 08:01 #1685707As far as Cheltenham is concerned, I think Henderson’s stable problems have magnified it as, like Cork says, a lot of the others go elsewhere. Not just the virus but Nicky’s lack of strength in depth. Normally he has several top quality novice hurdlers and “Which is Nicky’s Supreme horse?” is one of stable tour season highlights. This year early on, it was pretty much “Jeriko de Reponet might be good enough, the rest aren’t” vibe. Last year he had nothing. At least Sir Gino looks nice, but the thinning out of quality means he has fewer potential grade 1 chasers coming through.
JP and the Donnellys send him horses but I don’t know if he has cultivated many other high spending owners.Watching David Massaneh crying with happiness at Ballyburn winning I thought yep job done Willie there’s another chequebook in your pocket at the sales. He hadn’t talked to the trainer for 5 weeks and didn’t know where the horse was going to run but he looks like he is enjoying the ownership experience. It’s interesting that it’s a partnership horse, as is Il Etait Temps. So are the double green horses. Paul Nicholls understands the power of turbocharged partnerships/small rich syndicates- Caldwell Potter is now owned by one- and Harry Derham is already starting to do this. It’s not all doom for GB.

I am not sure they are sending him their best horses now, Sir Gino being the exception.
March 14, 2024 at 08:08 #1685711Dernham is a trainer to follow , good strike rate and he places them well , I know he’s getting hate but Skelton will be one of biggest also , what happens to seven barrows when Nicky does retire , whos likely to take over

March 14, 2024 at 08:32 #1685717If the English trainers take their best horses elsewhere and not take in Cheltenham then they’ll find it even harder to attract the big owners.

I don’t know. He has no sons, got three daughters but none of them are involved in training I don’t think. Is Nico close enough to surrogate son to take over/ would he want to?
March 14, 2024 at 09:42 #1685744The Cheltenham festival is beginning to get the look of the Dublin racing festival. In Henderson’s words “a Willie Mullins beneficiary”.
The more I know the less I understand.
