Yes. I reckon if Constitution Hill hadn’t been withdrawn, Mullins would have let her run. State Man couldn’t beat Constitution Hill but Lossiemouth might. But Mullins won both races so, strategically, right decision from his point of view.

Probably was but Willie wins the two races so owners happy. She will hopefully be stronger next year so will give state man and c hill a race. She is a top,top mare.

    Tonge,

Absolutely no chance would Lossiemouth have run with Constitution Hill in the race.
Neither her nor State Man will ever get him off the bridle if he’s on song and that’s not a dig at them.

At only 5yo, I think she was in the correct race this year. If she can beat State Man at Leopardstown (which I think is highly doubtful), then they should at least give the CH a try next season.

No she was in the right race for her at this time and it paid off. Mullins won both races.
Another year on her and then a champion hurdle tilt would be some race of we see CH back to his best. And they don’t avoid each other should be a race to enjoy

I don’t blame Messrs Mullins and Ricci taking the easy option given to them. But from the point of view of the sport: yes, she was in the wrong race.

Elite level sport should be about competition and the best taking on the best. We could have seen a great race between two high class horses today. Instead we saw two odds on processions.

It is partly a consequence of one stable having so many of the best horses (if anyone else trained Lossiemouth, she would almost certainly have run in the Champion Hurdle, especially in receipt of 7lbs). But it is also because of the Mares race having Grade 1 status.

Instead, there should be a ratings limit for the Mares race. Anything over the limit should only be eligible for the Champion. Mares receive a generous allowance, so what is the problem?

The crowd today paid something like £80 for the cheap seats. I don’t think they got the best spectacle today. It should and could be better.

Game of opinions, and mine is that Lossiemouth would have been third had she run in today’s Champion Hurdle.

Manifestly-correct decision to run in the Mares because a) she won it easily and b) they now know she stays 2m4f and that possibly opens the door to attempting even further in France.

She was in the right race for me for this year – I think she will physically improve again for another year on her back and will present a different challenge next season.

Lets not forget that the Bula (international) Hurdle she won was in no way a Champion Hurdle trial or even a G2 race based on who turned up – today she has beaten an officially rated 140 horse over a trip I think is not her ideal (no way should the French Champion Hurdle over 3m1f be on her agenda now)…..the way she travelled to the last you would have expected her to put more than just 3L into the runner up and I think 2m4f is as far as she wants to go.

I don’t think she would have won the Champion, she would have beaten Luccia for 3rd and maybe would have been right on the heels of Irish Point for second but I think she would have had a much harder race in doing so and I don’t think that that would have been in her best interest in only her 8th life time start.

Would really like to see her come over for the Fighting Fifth next season but I highly doubt that will happen and I wonder whether they will also try and keep her away from State Man next season until Cheltenham – could see her returning for the Bula again or maybe even starting off in the Ascot Hurdle over 2m3f (which has a long history of Champion Hurdle winners on its roll of honour including a certain Faugheen).

Should have been in the Champion at the very least it would have made the race a bit interesting.

The way everything is, they got a Gd1 Cheltenham win for Lossiemouth…..so fair enough. However, sport, is about the best taking on the best over the course of a season……and once again we didn’t see it.

Mares do need a Gd1 race, but does it need to be at Cheltenham? – what about at the January/April meeting? Or Aintree, Sandown, etc

We keep saying it, but there are too many options for horses, so they avoid each other; not what top class sport is meant to be about. I don’t know when those in charge will realise it.

It’s the equivalent of athletics adding 600m, 1000m, 2000m races for those athletes in between distances….

Agree Andy. There is a Mares only card at Cheltenham in April. Why not run the Grade 1 then instead. It would enhance what is otherwise a low profile card.

It is a game of opinions but I don’t really get why anyone thinks diluting the quality of Cheltenham is in the interests of the sport.

Being honest, I put my betting before the interests of the sport and I had 6/1 State Man and 2/1 Lossiemouth for the races they won.

The very best horses facing each other just isn’t why I am into this game – one horse being head and shoulders above the others – and I’ve backed it at a decent price! – is.

    I’m so going to Hell.
