Always like to have a long ranger in this, and one of the few I bet after last years meeting was Shanbally Kid for this. I think he can improve this year, but in hindsight, he’s probably got work to do, looking at his run in The Albert Bartlett. I’m willing to keep that bet anyway, as I’m hopeful (rather than confident). about it. Also bet Three Card Brag, but he’s available at 33’s, and I bet 20’s, so I’ll be looking to lay off if I can, as I can’t cash out. Hopefully he starts the season well to allow that.

    I also like………

    Corbetts Cross
    Flanking Maneuver
    Letsbeclearaboutit

……but the two that I really like are Iroko, and Sir Argus.

In an ideal world, I’d go with the pair of them right now, but as I stupidly bet early on this race, it could get too messy.

Iroko is possibly out this weekend at Cheltenham, and could face Apple Away, who I think could be an interesting one for The Brown Advisory. It would make sense to wait, but if declared this weekend, I might have to take that 16’s. He’s from a yard I like to follow, and I just love the way he finished up the hill in March.

Sir Argus is one who I think could also go for the shorter Novice Chases, but he’s a horse I’m very interested in this season, and the current 33’s is really tempting.

First things first, I have to get shot of Three Card Brag, and potentially Shanbally Kid too, before I can bet Sir Argus.

As I’m typing, I’ve decided to bet Iroko, so he’s the main hope right now, so he’s the one I’ll list below, but as I’ve just said, I could end up all over the place here by betting too early

    Iroko 16’s
    Sir Argus

Salvador Ziggy 7-1 after seasonal debut. Not too clever last time in USA hopefully he can bounce back.

    Its never too early
I’m hunting down odds for the 2025 Gold Cup.. :rose:

I’d like to see Flanking Maneuver in a race like this. I’m sure he wants a trip

Corbett’s Cross would be my go to if I wasn’t already convinced he’s getting the Noble Yeats campaign from a couple years ago. I.e inadequate trips until he has a handicap mark, qualifies for the National in a small field over 3 miles, Cheltenham handicap, Aintree.

Thus I can’t see him coming here. Or maybe I’m just being cynical.

Embassy Gardens at 25s is my first bet here, trip and first day soft ground might be his thing.

Probably classy enough to win it alright, but the way he races is he really one for 3m+ around Chelt?

Personally i’d be considering trying to make all on him over 2 1/2. Hasn’t stayed in a stayers well enough for me.

“NH Chase looks open and again Willie doesn’t have a short priced one so put Nick Rickett in it i say, rather than relying on just Embassy Gardens (not sure Minella Cocooner would get the trip and/or be as good as he was).”

This is quite a nice bet Mike. He could go to that race at Naas at the end of January to get qualified, the one that Carefully Selected qualified in (though Nick is a much better jumper than that snooker table). Or the Ten Up though that’s probably to close to the big day for comfort.
Actually Nick Rockett, Embassy Gardens and Monty’s Star could all go to Naas, as they’ve only won a beginner’s each and would have no penalty, though the Mulryans might want their horse to have a crack at GCW and FTF at Leopardstown just to see whether he’s G1 material or not. One advantage your selection has over Embassy is that he’ll have had 3 runs by festival time whilst EG probably only has room for one more- and experience is pretty important for this race.

Added Embassy Gardens 6-1 for now. Nick Rockett isn’t qualified yet and time running out.

    Mike,
You always quote prices you’ve backed the horses at.
So why don’t you quote the price you’ve cashed out at?

In this instance Mike has put him up at 16s- the day before he won his beginners’. He’s best price half that now- presumably backers are sitting tight hoping he’ll go for the Ten Up and will scramble to cash out if he is declared this weekend over an inadequate trip for qualification- so it’s likely that Mike cashed out for no loss or even a small profit.

I would be more interested to know about his bet last Saturday on Jonbon at 10/1 for the Ryanair (a race in which he was never likely to run), which he says he cashed out less than 2 hours later.

“So why don’t you quote the price you’ve cashed out at?”

It doesn’t really matter as the bet no longer exists in my Cheltenham book.

“it’s likely that Mike cashed out for no loss or even a small profit.”

    Small profit on this occasion.

“backers are sitting tight hoping he’ll go for the Ten Up and will scramble to cash out if he is declared this weekend”

NRNBs with no cash out are just around the corner so didn’t want to wait any longer. Have Embassy Gardens on my side at least, nice early bird pick btw.

“I would be more interested to know about his bet last Saturday on Jonbon at 10/1 for the Ryanair (a race in which he was never likely to run), which he says he cashed out less than 2 hours later.”

Nothing to add, all there in the Ryanair thread.
