Why on Earth would you be suspended, GT?

Many thanks for this, Homer, here goes….

    1) I backed every one of Ruby Walsh’s 59 Cheltenham Festival winners.

Bollocks, did you – absolutely FALSE.

    2) The four professional games of football I have watched at grounds all ended 0-0.

I so want this to be TRUE, so it is!

    3) I knocked a few teeth out sledging when I was a kid.

    Plausible – TRUE

    4) A few years later a British Lion Rugby International knocked some more teeth out.

I’m not having that – he’d be a dead man if he did and it would have been on the news. FALSE

    5) This Thursday I had my first alcoholic drink and first bet on the horses since July 2020.

    FALSE

    6) Since the turn of the decade I have walked an average of over 12 miles per day.

Being on a bus doesn’t count as walking – FALSE

    7) I once chatted to Bob Willis when he was captain of the England cricket team outside Lord’s Cricket Ground.

    Why not? TRUE

    8) I once literally lost my shirt in the bookies.

A tale manifestly contrary to the known laws of physics – FALSE

    9) When Bernard Manning came to my local pub to do a gig I heckled him and called him a racist barsteward. He shot me down in flames.

Again, I so want this to be TRUE, so it is!

    10) I have only visited my Doctors surgery once with illness since I joined 30 years ago.

    Healthy git – TRUE

Leading trainer and Dan “Two Dinners” Skelton is rumoured to keep his brother’s weight down by eating his supper for him every evening.

The usual nonsense from me aside, they’re the emerging lethal combination at the top in British Jump racing with Ben Pauling moving up rapidly too.

It’s basically a 4m2f Fixed Brush (with spruce garnish) Handicap Hurdle nowadays, but I still love the race.

Since the weights came out I’d say Corach Rambler, Cheltenham Gold Cup third and last year’s winner, and I Am Maximus have run the best trials and Mr Incredible ran well today.

I will be very interested to see who is, isn’t, and is tantalisingly close to making the final 34 cut.

Probably grossly unfair on DBRDBR, but spot on regarding me, GT, yes, I am definitely a temperamental dodgepot.

“While he wouldn’t be one to have the mortgage on, Beauport shapes as if a marathon trip might suit him, 140 is a tempting mark for a still young (8yo) horse rated 148 over hurdles who won the Colin Parker on his chasing debut and he is 16/1 with the books (and bigger on the machine) in what wouldn’t be the strongest Midlands National ever.”

I think you’re absolutely spot on, CAS, but it might be easier for Ferguson and McManus to adopt that attitude for the following reasons.

Ferguson is a former hugely-successful football manager with a massive extended family (children and grandchildren) he is proud Patriarch of – racing is just a recreational part of his life and his legacy to the world is unaffected by his racing decisions.

Ditto McManus, a successful City financier, who I gather is head of a similarly large family, who probably views racing the same.

But for Henderson, it’s life or death stuff – he’s still managing his own equine Man Utd at Sevenbarrows and I suspect his Cheltenham Festival legacy strike rate is everything to him.

Henderson just can’t be as chilled about it as Ferguson and McManus because it’s a job for him, not a recreational pastime.

You’re some boy, Cormack, countless forumites you could pick up on various things here, but it’s always me – hilarious.

I couldn’t begin to care whether you believe me or not, but then I couldn’t begin to care about anything you say ever.

That utter embarrassment of a home page at YOUR website tells me everything I need to know about your level of understanding of this game, or pride in either it or this forum, before you ever type a word.

It’s not uncommon to lose your bottle a bit generally as you get older, and I suspect CAS is right, Nicky Henderson might be a worse case than most.

I can kinda understand it with Constitution Hill, because I think Henderson knows he’s got one of the all-time great Champion Hurdlers on his hands and, at his age he won’t get another like him in this lifetime, but it’s not just that horse, is it, it’s most Grade 1 animals in his yard in recent years.

The only exception are the JP McManus horses and I suspect at some stage the owner had a short one-way conversation the likes of Michael Buckley shirked having, namely: “Racehorses are born to race, so race my horses if you want to continue to train for me.”

But I suspect Henderson is now too old to change generally of his own volition.

I said it generally takes an OR140 performance to win it, you absolute deadhead, and it did – an OR142 horse was three quarters of a length second and the mare (who obviously received 7lb) will be going up for this.

Just for future reference, when I post here, I’m talking to the grown ups, not the utter child who spends his sad life claiming to have got the biggest price on the planet then cashed out when it all goes wrong, so kindly take yourself and that moronic emoticon you’re so fond of elsewhere – thanks in advance.

The only sadder person on this forum than you is anyone who believes your nonsense.

Most enjoyable Cheltenham Festival for me in absolutely years.

    Highs

Brilliant novices Gaelic Warrior and Ballyburn

State Man doing his usual professional job to land a deserved Champion Hurdle

    Lossiemouth hosing up

An epic tussle between ultra-game duo Grey Dawning and Ginnys Destiny

Galopin Des Champs proving the best Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in many years

    The Hunters’ Chase

    Lows

All the moaning about “Irish” and “Mullins” domination

People running down really decent Grade 1 races like the Turners and the Ryanair

People running down a four-day Festival when, back in the day, unless you were there it was, if you were lucky, three races on BBC1, one on BBC2 (as the kids programmes had now started on BBC1), Tuesday to Thursday and it was over before you could blink

    Funniest moments

Ireland winning six-one on Day One and being two-nil up on Day Two prompting some to declare UK racing suddenly in crisis (take a look at prize money at midweek meetings and you’ll see it’s been in crisis for donkeys years)

Dan “I’m the one UK trainer who actually knows what he’s doing and I spend all my earnings on pies” Skelton plotting up a handicap double then winning both the Turners and the Ryanair to shut everyone up for 24 hours

    What a week!

    That’s certainly my impression, GAG.

The traditionalists don’t like it and miss the old corinthian spirit – but I never liked seeing such jockeys cutting their often-exhausted horses in half in a pointless race for, say, sixth place.

I remember once being down at the last at Leicester’s Hunters’ Chase meeting in the 1980s when a tired driven animal basically collapsed into the fence and lay winded for some minutes afterwards.

The punters all cheered with relief when it got to its feet, but they then turned on the rider and gave him absolute dog’s abuse as he trudged up the run in to the changing room.

More professional approaches from the modern riders leads to both better equine welfare and punters getting a more competent ride for their money when they have a bet.

Err, not in the slightest – I think it favours mares in Jump racing, especially over longer trips in testing ground and I bet accordingly.

I’d be mortified if they did away with it!

You know the game, HDLG – I’d say you’ve absolutely nailed it there.

This is by no means the only horse to improve for leaving that yard.
