I know a lot of people don’t care about this sort of thing but the standings at the start of today were:
1st Dan Skelton. £2,391,247
2nd Paul Nicholls. £2,387,251.57
3rd Willie Mullins. £1,882,988.85With Skelton in front and just over a month of the season left, he must be getting ready to give it a go.
Nicholls seems to target Aintree more than Cheltenham these days but Skelton generally gets quite a few winners there as well.
Even Mullins is not entirely out of it but it looks like he will need to win the Grand National to have a chance.
It is also worth noting the number of winners they have had to amass their prize money:
Skelton 96
Nicholls 107
Mullins 14March 16, 2024 at 18:29 #1687056Be nice to have a different name as champion trainer.
The more I know the less I understand.
March 16, 2024 at 18:32 #1687057Crazy a trainer with 14 winners can sit third, I said something similar about Aidan for the flat championship.
The more I know the less I understand.
March 16, 2024 at 18:36 #1687058I think a trainer’s job is to target races and win prize money for their owners, whereas a jockey’s job is to ride winners. As such, I think it is right the Trainers Championship is decided on prize money and the Jockeys Championship on winners.
March 16, 2024 at 18:52 #1687060Leading trainer and Dan “Two Dinners” Skelton is rumoured to keep his brother’s weight down by eating his supper for him every evening.
The usual nonsense from me aside, they’re the emerging lethal combination at the top in British Jump racing with Ben Pauling moving up rapidly too.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 16, 2024 at 19:02 #1687062If it was done the old way Nicholls would be slightly ahead.
The more I know the less I understand.
March 16, 2024 at 20:09 #1687075For all the fuss about Mullins’ current domination, he nearly won it a few years ago; but for Vautour falling at Aintree and Nicholls winning the Scottish GN, and was sending runners to Perth and sandown by the end.
I remember another trainer going to extremes to winMarch 16, 2024 at 20:15 #1687076West Balboa, a winner for the Skeltons at Aintree on Grand National day last year, ran an eye catching race at Kempton today. Settled at the back and nearest at the finish.
Should be spot on for Aintree.
March 16, 2024 at 21:03 #1687084A points system would make it interesting.
Class 6, 25 pts, Class 5, 50 pts etc…
Graded races similar with no bias toward so called championship races.
Premier handicaps could have a bias toward the more prestigious events or no bias at all.The more I know the less I understand.
March 16, 2024 at 21:37 #1687086I’m sure mullins could win it if he wanted to but will target the big races. Punchestown his focus now I’d think. If he is still there come Aintree he will give it a go then.
April 13, 2024 at 16:23 #1690282Mullins has got to give this a go now.
April 13, 2024 at 16:28 #1690285Is he in front already?
April 13, 2024 at 16:56 #1690301He is by a few £s from a quick tot up.
The more I know the less I understand.
April 13, 2024 at 17:59 #1690327The figures after yesterday were:
Skelton £2,743,141.61
Nicholls £2,731,781.62
Mullins £2,327,104.51I believe the first prize in the National is £500,000, so that would put Mullins ahead even allowing for Skelton’s winner in the first race.
I assume Mullins will be having a few more runners at Ayr and Sandown now.
April 13, 2024 at 18:38 #1690339I think Willie earned £505,000 in the GN, lost £50,000 to the Skeltons in the first race and managed to win back around £24,000 in the remaining five races. That’s roughly a gain of about £480,000 which should put him in front by about £60,000.
Please correct me, if I’m wrong.
April 13, 2024 at 20:40 #1690379Looking on RP’s individual trainer stats for the current season the total earnings are as follows:
Mullins: £2,874,693
Skelton: £2,821,886
Nicholls: £2,735,107Will be interesting to see how many Townend comes over for at Ayr & Sandown given that he is behind Kennedy in the Irish Jockeys Title race.
April 13, 2024 at 22:01 #1690407Thanks, LD. He’s up £53k now and should hold all the aces, if he plays them right. Which he surely can.
