Well done good foresight

Thanks VtC and good luck with your bets today. Looking forward to watching some good racing.
I have two bets for Fairyhouse tomorrow.
1.45 Mullaghboy 66-1 E/W
Has no chance on the face of it, beaten a long way LTO when last of 3. But the ground was rubbish so he probably wasn’t given a hard time when beaten. Tongue tie on now, and a jockey on board whose recent mounts have outrun their odds. Worth a small E/W.4.35 Clontarf 12-1 win
Won LTO over course and about this distance. Scope to come on further.I nominate First Lieutenant for an involuntary Robert the Bruce award. Hasn’t won for 4 years, rated 31lb below his best and received 12lb and a 30 length beating from Foxrock in a hunter chase earlier this season. It would be the training performance of the century if Mouse could get the poor bugger to win.
have gone with Ballybolley in the opener on the basis the only time he has looked useful over obstacles was over course and distance
Nice pick Stilvi
Great post Jonibake, I know it was aimed at a more experienced punter as a “keep the faith” but also very useful to me as a total novice.
8-1 available with Paddys so I’ve topped up in addition to the 6-1 I’d already taken with bet365.
I like Fine Rightly too- he knows his way round this course, jumps, should stay OK and will be fresh for this. His mark might be a bit high but I suppose they wouldn’t be contemplating putting him on the boat if they thought he didn’t have a chance. He doesn’t have any other entries so I went ahead and took the 33-1 E/W and put him in an E/W double with Haymount 25-1 for the Irish National.
I might have another bet after the final decs/NRNB as there are too many who might swerve this for the bet365 and I’m not au fait enough with owner/trainer preferences etc to know what’s likely to go where.
Eminent priced at 6-1 for the Feilden Stakes so I have put a bit on.
I’ve backed Haymount at 25-1 for this. It’s hard to see his run for the first half of the Hunt Cup at Cheltenham as he is kept well covered up. His jumping doesn’t look great but I think this may be because he’s being kept under a tight hold. It’s better for the second half and he stays on well at the end. I think there’s scope for this horse to improve more.
I know nothing about the Flat but as Triptych seems a little bit in love with Eminent I’ve backed him for both this and the Derby at 40s and the double at 200-1.
Also on Rivet (because he has won the only 2yo race I have heard of) for same double at 80-1 and one race for each, ie Eminent 2000gns + Rivet Derby double , and vice versa at 676-1.
Hope they run well in prep races and make it to the start anyway.
Thanks, I only put a couple of pounds on each time and not every race as I’m a novice punter, hence the username, but there was enough to make a bit of a wad (well a nice number to look at on the top right corner of my online account).
Yes that’s a big improvement- I hate to see exhausted beaten horses clamber over and through the last few fences and roll up the run in like a ship in a heavy swell, trying so hard but cantering at practically walking pace. I noticed the timely pull ups this year too, much better.
Oh my God the shouting. The endless shouting.
The nadir; 5 minutes of Fitzgerald and McCoy spouting the usual drivel “for one of these jockeys, today, it’s going to be a life changer, blah blah blah”, all the time you could clearly see behind them, the horses in the parade ring. When will these TV people wake up and realise it’s the horses that make this game?
Not ITV’s fault, but we don’t even get to see the horses after they’ve won. Apparently this is necessary, and the horsey types will know better than me if that’s true (when was it a problem in the past?), but even if it is necessary, it takes a lot away. Who really wants to see who pays the bills?
Probably because they’re terrified something might collapse and die on air. Or even have a problem and have the cameras have to cut away from concerned faces and oxygen masks. It was warm and the winner I thought looked stiff behind for a few strides, almost as if it was about to tie up (walked on OK though). I bet the vets would not be keen to have the cameras anywhere near if the pressure is on to suddenly try to save a National hero.
When a horse dies in a fall it is usually a long camera shot and the camera is naturally sweeping on with the race so the stricken horse is smoothly and quickly out of shot, plus there is exciting action to comment on straight away up the front. If the camera was close up on a horse that went down after the race, they would have to do a rushed and jerky cut away, and then go and do interviews while the viewer is wondering if the horse that filled their screen a few seconds ago staggering and collapsing with a thump on the walkway is still alive.
Thanks GM, really interesting to get the post match analysis alongside your preview notes, particularly your thoughts on pace and placement. Saint Are (the best of my picks, the rest did nothing!) probably benefited from wily old fox Davy Russell managing every ounce of his available ability and stamina too.
Well done Stilvi and thanks for a great comp Nathan.
Nice double Steve! Be great to see Yanworth over fences.
