That was outstanding, fab performances from the front 3
April 26, 2017 at 17:56 #1298407Brilliant race!
Fair play to Sizing John and connections, if you told me at the start of the season he would win three gold cups I would have laughed in your face!
What a run by Coney though, machine!

Have to feel sorry for Djakadam as well, seems a perennial bridesmaid but never runs a bad race and is a credit to racing.
April 26, 2017 at 17:57 #1298408What a great finale for the season. We can only hope dat Coneygree will stay sound for next season, just great to see such a powerful frontrunner. Djakadam – again – just not good enough and Sizing John confirmed his quality.
Does it get any better for Robbie Power this 2017?
April 26, 2017 at 18:01 #1298409Don’t think I’ve ever been as happy when backing a loser!
Terrific front running effort from Coneygree…what if he hadn’t made that uncharacteristic mistake two out…bet team Bradstock are absolutely thrilled with that performance…just hope and pray he comes out of it well and they’ve a serious horse to go to war with again next season…also surely proved soft ground isn’t a necessity…think mistake and match practice at the top level has been his undoing there…
Got to tip your hat to the other two aswell…very tough to back up so quick after a tough Gold Cup…both ran their hearts out..what a joy to watch..
April 26, 2017 at 18:02 #1298410Watched it on the big screen at Perth with a group of racegoers and just a fantastic race. Two horses giving their all at the end of a hard season and a mighty run from one who couldn’t have been 100% fit.
Stunning performance from Sizing John to lift three Gold Cups in one season.
Djakadam must surely win a big one at some point or was this his best chance?
Coneygree’s jumping wasn’t as consistently good as normal with a few sticky jumps before the “if only” blunder at the second last. I have everything crossed that he can get a full season in next year.
A race to make you glad you love this sport.
April 26, 2017 at 18:12 #1298411I think that ground is a fair bit slower than the good to yielding it is advertised as because the time of the Gold Cup was some 23.60s slower than standard and as we could see they went hard from the start.
April 26, 2017 at 18:44 #1298414Blinding race, really enjoyed that. Must bow down to Coneygree, we’ll have to remember this race when we’re comparing the post-Kauto/Denman Gold Cup winners and keep sight of the fact that he is the best we’ve seen since. Heroic.
All credit to Sizing John though, he’s the model of a straightforward racehorse. Never too keen, generally efficient at his fences, travels well, tactically versatile and courageous in a finish. If you were to compare him to any Gold Cup winner, Best Mate would be the best likeness. Both with very good form at 2m too. You can talk about Djakadam or Coneygree bungling crucial fences but the winner made a total horlicks of the second-last himself.
April 26, 2017 at 19:58 #1298427Magnificent performance by Coneygree who must, on song, be one of the best jumpers of a fence that ever raced. Superb training performance too by the Bradstocks with such a fragile animal. I can only imagine Nico’s dilemma as he fought back close home: give him a really hard race or save him? Given that he’s far from guaranteed to pull out sound over the next week or so, there must have been a strong temptation to throw everything at it.
The winner is the epitome of gameness while perhaps not quite being the best of Gold Cup winners. Reportedly ran a bit flat and lost a front shoe so all the more credit. Djakadam loses nothing in defeat either. He is so remarkably tough. I can’t recall the last time he had an easy race and probably never has at this trip and beyond. His resilience is incredible for one who’s more than entitled to have gone a bit sour by now.
All in all, a race for the ages.
April 26, 2017 at 21:13 #1298432Just saw the replay now, wish I’d seen the race in real time now!
