Very interesting clash between Melon and Labaik here, the latter having the option of running in the Champion Hurdle. It would seem Elliot has maybe sorted out Labaik’s issues, as this would explain the abrupt u-turn taken by connections when he was withdrawn from the Aintree sale. However, with his massive health warning, and the added fact that the longer whip is not allowed to be used by starters in Ireland, he is quite untouchable at 11/4. Melon should come on a lot from his run in the Supreme, and I expect him to be a lot closer to Labaik if it evolves into a clash between the two. Still, 11/8 is too short to back with any confidence.
This leads me to Cilaos Emery 12/1. He ran well in the Supreme, finishing a lot further up the field than I anticipated. He went off 12/1 in that race, so it beggars belief that he is going off the same price after running so well, and in a much more open contest. The betting suggests that he is the Mullins 3rd string, but I would be very surprised if Paul Townend doesn’t choose him over the very disappointing Bunk Off Early.
April 24, 2017 at 16:03 #1298126Not a race I’ll be getting involved in especially as there’s only 7 runners reducing e/w to first 2 places. I think if Labaik jumps off he’ll confirm form and if he doesn’t then I’d be hard pushed to see Melon being defeated. Given this I couldn’t recommend anyone betting on either of the top two in the market with any confidence.
I can see Cilaos Emery does make appeal at the prices but Townend plumping for Bunk Off Early is worrying.
April 24, 2017 at 23:13 #1298166Was on Bunk off Early at Cheltenham so would be annoyed if he wins.
Played Melon at 5/4 in a multi
April 25, 2017 at 11:16 #1298198Melon very strong in the market now 11/10 with Labaik out to 3/1 in a place. Cilaos Emery 16s with StanJames.
The 3/1 has suckered me in on Labaik but to a very limited stake given the risks attached.
April 25, 2017 at 11:19 #1298199Yeah, I was going to sit it out as well Charles, but Labaik makes the Mug 63, 3’s is big enough to lure me.
April 25, 2017 at 14:07 #1298213Every Paddy Power shop in the country will be jammed with shrewdies, waiting at the counter with their dockets written out to see if he starts!
April 25, 2017 at 16:26 #1298228Nice one Voleur
April 25, 2017 at 16:32 #1298229Thanks VtC a game winner! Hard luck to you and other Labaik backers, that’s him finished in Ireland in afraid.
April 25, 2017 at 16:38 #1298230Entirely to predictable I’m afraid – but I was most surprised that Ruby actually got drawn into a duel for the lead on a horse that he held up at Cheltenham.
As soon as he didn’t let Pingshou go on when he joined him I started looking at the others who let them get on with it but I thought Bunk Off Early would have been the one to take advantage – doubt Willie is that bothered as it is a nice chunk of change he has clawed back on Elliott in the trainers title, this could go down to the last race.
April 25, 2017 at 16:40 #1298231Probably for the best Voleur, and no harm done for me**, no Labaik backer can complain, we knew what kind of horse we were betting.
**Unless the rest of my Mug 63 comes in……………then my attitude might change lol
April 25, 2017 at 16:55 #1298233what a terrible ride by Ruby getting dragged into a battle with the Tizzard horse, Brainless.
that’s twice Melon’s cost me now
April 25, 2017 at 17:11 #1298234Thanks VtC a game winner! Hard luck to you and other Labaik backers, that’s him finished in Ireland in afraid.
I doth my hat to you my good man! Very well done indeed.
As VTC said, we can’t complain about Labaik as it was factored into the price and I’m really interested to see where the first two go on from here next season.
I have to agree with Judge though that Ruby really should have let Robbie Power go on and not get embroiled in a fight so early.
Labaik could yet turn up on Friday in the Champion Hurdle but I don’t think man has yet invented a pole long enough for me not to touch the horse with!
April 25, 2017 at 17:13 #1298235Well done Voleur great pick
April 25, 2017 at 17:19 #1298238Sorry my mistake it was Davy Russell on Pingshou not Robbie Power.
Quote from Willie Mullins: I’d imagine Davy Russell and Ruby just took each other on and went too fast down the back. As much as Ruby thought he should let Davy on, if he had let him on and he beat him he would have kicked himself, so he had to go with him.
As annoyed as Melon backers may well be, he makes a fair point.
April 25, 2017 at 18:01 #1298247Thanks fellas, it’s a tough one with Melon. In hindsight yes Ruby should have let Davy go on, but we all saw what Pingshou did from the front at Aintree so I suppose Ruby didn’t want to take the risk.
April 25, 2017 at 22:42 #1298304Yes well done voleur.
Thinking about the race in the aftermath it wasn’t a bad effort by Melon to only just been beaten given how he was ridden.
I do think he can progress next year and is a strong contender for the champion hurdle.
The Melon addiction goes on lol.
April 26, 2017 at 10:21 #1298340Well played Voleur, 12-1 is very nice
