great memories; also Brown Lad, who had been novice chasing, winning the 3-mil hurdle in an absolute canter
I recall Captain Christy started favourite but was pulled up in that Gold Cup. He was frighteningly brilliant on his day, one of the best ever, but maddeningly inconsistent
no, Bobsline and Noddys Ryde was epic, but Ten Up and Glanford Brigg was alos a stirring contest
thanks for the correction; I was thinking of Noddys Ryde.
Did Glanford Brigg get injured, or lose his form?I was in Dublin this morning and it was spitting rain; conditions unlikley to dry out, so I reckon STS won’t be there
Ten Up had a slow start to his novice career, then turned in a big performance in the Reynoldstown before beating Glanford Brigg in a titanic clash in the the Sun alliance; it’s one of those races I’d love to see again, if it’s available anywhere. Unfortunately Glanford Brigg was killed early in the next season, and after Ten Up won his gold cup, beating Bual and Soothsayer in tough conditions, he began to break blood vessels
very impressive, all over once Murtagh went for home. O’Brien also has Fame and Glory and Mastercraftsman to take on Sea the Stars

only horse to do the CHGC double; i
GC in record time as well, despite being a novice and still a modest jumper and able to then beat a great 2-mile champion Buckhouse over his favourite trip
winner of irish/english and french CHs in one years.
i was ther on the day of her GC win and it was an incredible occasionI was also at Danolis Hennessy victory; brilliant but not at the same level
great to see a fuller version of Golden cygnets chetenham win. I’d love to see some of the Gold cups in full, rather than just the last few furlongs; seeing how the race develops, who made the pace etc; Captain Christy, Nortons Coin were two of my favourite races
the mare had had a long season, with soem seriously hard races; Horses aren’t machines, they need a rest. Tom Dreaper never campaigned his greats during the summer as wll as the winter.
Taking her to France was totally irresponsibleFebruary 27, 2009 at 01:05 in reply to: cheltenham 2009 champion chase/hurlde world hurdle gold cup #212515hard to look apst Kauto and Master-minded, world hurdle don’t know, have a sneaking fancy for Won in the Dark if the going is good
Dawn Run was without doubt the most under-rated horse in view of her achievmnets;
– only horse to do the CH/GC double
– winner of 3 CHs in one year, different distances and ground
– won GC in record time
– beat 2-mile champion (who had also won in record time)
– won GC as virtual novice, so had massive improvemnet likelyI confess to a certain emotional attachmnet; as a student I first saw her live in the Forenoughts hurdle in Fairyhouse. Hartstown, the previous yrs champion novice was favouraite, she was 10-1, but she looked magnificent (if unfurnished in the paddock), jumped off in front and made all.
If you watch the recording of her winning the GC, as jonjo salutes the crowds, a big black hat sails up into the air – that was my hat, and I never got it back
The sad thing is that she could have won another 3 GCs; imagine if Jim Lewis had owned her, would he have sent to to France to die?- AuthorPosts
