If Aidan does not know which one is the best then I expect none of them are good enough.

Having said that, perhaps Battle of Marengo just does not find much in front, rather like Sea The Stars, who won everything, but in workmanlike fashion.

You’re quite right. Actually I should have done my research, he does have Northern Dancer a way back via Danzig.

They are obviously trying the outcross with Canford Cliffs though.

Agree with you Crepello, that there must be concerns about the sheer volume of Galileo/Northern Dancer line horses being churned out every year. Unfortunately as long as it keeps working and making them $$$ they will not stop.

Strategic Prince is still the Northern Dancer line via Danehill.

I am actually interested to see if Aidan can turn this horse around.

I agree it would be so interesting if some of the NH trainers would send their good horses over the flat. Obviously the really good ones like Sprinter Sacre would not be worth risking, but Overturn has won well on the flat. Ile De Ray is another. Rite of Passage beat a Ballydoyle blue blood to win the Gold Cup and then the stayers race on Champions Day.

That might be because they inherit their mitochondria from the mother, hence part of the respiratory capacity. Sea The Stars was a classic example of a stout (German) female line.

Telescope has won a maiden and not by very far, why is he so popular? His pedigree looks more St Leger than Derby.

True enough, we all had doubts about Sea The Stars stamina because of Cape Cross and so it proved that one staying parent was enough to produce the requisite stamina.

At least Bolger is game enough to have a go, and not being too precious about his horse’s perfect record…

Would absolutely love Dawn Approach to win the Derby but if I were lucky enough to own him I would be aiming him at the middle distance races between now and July:

He does hold entries in the
    Irish 2000 Guineas – 25th May
    St. James’s Palace Stakes – 18th June
    Coral Eclipse – 6th July

As you only get one bite at the cherry for the Derby can’t blame connections for declaring him a runner, but will he run? Bookies very quick to jump on the bandwagon after his 2000 Guineas success, but I would rather wait until the day to bet on him, there is no doubt he will give 100 per cent.

    With regard to his Dam

    Hymn of the Dawn

    (aka Dawn Run  )
Did a little research on her pedigree and discovered that she is by

    Phone Trick

    who actually sired

    Favorite Trick

who was the first 2yo to be voted USA Horse of the Year in 1997. He did in fact win over 9 furlongs during his career, but was also defeated, close to the end of the race, on his first effort into 3rd place.

    Phone Trick

    was out of

    Clever Trick

    who was out of

    Neartic

    by

    Nearco

    & Lady Angela

    whose Sire was

    Hyperion

So to conclude, when you look deeper into his Dams pedigree Dawn Approach does have the ability and breeding to win the Derby on both sides, the genious that is Jim Bolger would have all this taken into account and would not be sending him to Epsom without a chance..Jac

If you got back far enough many horses have Nearco in there somewhere!! He is the Grand Sire of Northern Dancer after all.

Interesting to note that the winners of the two Newmarket trials, the Craven and the Nell Gwyn both tanked in their respective Guineas. Were the trials too close to the real thing? If I had a smart three year old I would not be running it in either race given the stats and closeness of the two races. On the other hand, perhaps both horses were overrated anyway!

I did like Toronado, and I think from the way he flopped that he was a tired horse. Hope he gets a wee break now and comes back out later this season at G2/3 level to regain some confidence.

I think Bolger might have more gall than Cecil and take on the older horses this season. Whatever you say about Sea The Stars ability, the trainer really laid it all on the line and took a massive risk with the Arc. Henry was so busy protecting Frankel’s perfect record he never took any risks until it was too late. Sad really.

Surely that is way too high for an older gelding whose limitations have been well exposed?

    60k Guineas at the most.

Andy – He was bred in New Zealand though, as was the other High Chaparral superstar It’s A Dundeel. Must be something in the water they give the old boy down there! Toronado was bred in Ireland

Thanks for correcting me Rob. I tried looking Hannon up on Racing Post "Major Wins" but I must have missed those!

I’d like to see a top class Group 1 winner in the Northern Hemisphere for High Chaparral, I have always been a bit of a fan.

As much as I would like Toronado to win this, EG Senor has made a good point in that wide margin winners of the Craven have not proved especially lucky in the Guineas. Considering it pretty much gives the horse a trial shot at what the guineas track feels like, this trial has rarely produced Guineas or even top notch Group 1 winners.

Since the Guineas win of Haafd in 2004 the following horses have won the Craven and fallen well short of top class:
    2005 Democratic Deficit
    2006 Killybegs
    2007 Adagio
    2008 Twice Over
    2009 Delegator
    2010 Elusive Pimpernel
    2011 Native Khan
    2012 Trumpet Major

Not exactly Hall of Fame stuff. Only Twice Over won at Group 1 level and not over a mile.

We need to be realistic about this trial and not get over-excited because of a visually impressive result in a weak race. Dawn Approach should still be a strong favourite for this race as he has beaten some excellent opposition in big fields, repeatedly.

Another negative would be Hannon’s record in this race. Am I right in thinking he’s never won this? Their best shot must have been Canford and they really messed that one up.
