I thought we could have a little competition to see who can guess nearest to the sales price that Hunt Ball will fetch when he goes to the sales shortly.
Enter on this thread – just guess the price (in guineas I think) and nearest to the actual selling price wins. I’ll conjure up a nice souvenir from either Epsom or Ascot for the winner.
If he’s unsold then all null and void. If two people enter the same price then first to have posted will win. In the event of a tie the person who guessed OVER the price will win (because we love optimists).
And, as it’s my thread, I get to start with an opening bid of….
118,000 Guineas
May 1, 2013 at 21:58 #438155Surely that is way too high for an older gelding whose limitations have been well exposed?
60k Guineas at the most.
May 1, 2013 at 22:02 #438157Well since Bobs Worth went through their books a few years ago for twenty grand, Hunt Ball is probably worth about two-and-six by comparison.
However, I think he may have some good races left in him – he’s not really had his ground this season and has often been quite highly-tried. Eight years old with a heart of oak:
£124,000

May 1, 2013 at 22:10 #438161He’s not that old and has proven form at a very fair level – and management of his h’cap mark could render him competitive in the top class h’caps. Potential National horse IMO. I’m sure plenty trainers will be eyeing him up and recommending him to wealthy owners. Lots more has been paid for a lot less – and quite frequently too.
But I know what you mean AOTF – if I had £118k I wouldn’t be spending it on him, but I think someone will. I could be a bit toppy though, in hindsight

However, 60k is too low I reckon. One decent top class H’cap win would repay that purchase price, if you had a few quid down.
May 1, 2013 at 22:21 #438167Hmm, not a clue what horses in training tend to fetch but I’ll go for 106,000 Guineas.
May 1, 2013 at 22:27 #438169When you think ‘Garde Champetre’ fetched over £400,000 I’d imagine this fellow will get 77,000 guineas which is cheap but far more realistic in comparison,he has only 19 runs on the clock for an 8yo and theres still plenty life in the big horse.I’d aim him for the Paddy Power Gold cup now……..
May 1, 2013 at 22:35 #438170I would say Hunt Ball is worth around 90,000 Guineas.
So that is my guess
90,000 Guineas
, I see him as a National horse too.

May 1, 2013 at 23:18 #438177I’m going for the round 100,000 guineas not much idea of NH sales but in view of his profile and past history Hunt Ball could attract quite a lot of interest. What a lovely horse he will be for someone or maybe a syndicate. Could TRF club together for him David
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 1, 2013 at 23:31 #438179120,000…sold to Irvin Naylor.
May 1, 2013 at 23:38 #43818068,000 gns for me.
May 1, 2013 at 23:54 #438184I’ll be the highest so far. Surely Hunt Ball is an ideal type for a globetrotting campaign after he has had a good rest.
He needs quick ground and would have a good shot at the big money on offer in the Nakayama Grand Jump. Maybe there is a summer race at Auteuil for him too. I see your estimates and I raise to:
199,999 gns
May 2, 2013 at 02:30 #438194I’ll go for 112,000. I can’t afford that but I hope the lucky owner gets 3 or 4 years top class fun with him before retirement, what a lovely horse he is.

Hence wanting him to go to Irvin Naylor. He’s had success with Alfa Beat this spring. Naylor’s a billionaire or close to it, so if he wants Hunt Ball he’ll get him.
May 2, 2013 at 05:25 #438198Ok plucking a number out of the air…….88,000gns. I don’t think he’s the horse he was.
May 2, 2013 at 07:54 #438205Good competition!
I think his profile will make it difficult to get a gamble on at a good price, so the return will be winnings only. I think he has been over-raced and put in some wrong races so is a bit jaded. I think if the trainer thought he had a paddy power win in him he would have kept him in the yard. So I’m going quite low.
51,500 gns
May 2, 2013 at 08:11 #438207Shouldn’t the guesses be in pounds? Think that’s what they use now at DBS. Will the guesses be converted into pounds by cormack or will the guesses be classed as pounds in the amounts forecast?
If he goes to the sale, think it will be quite high although he could be withdrawn or sold privately prior to the sale. Will go for 220,000 pounds.
May 2, 2013 at 08:21 #43820869,500 gns. If only I had a few hundred gns I’d buy him
