I’ll be surprised if this doesn’t win tomorrow. O’Brien to dominate the derby trials again?

In my own little world I’ve marked him down as a St Leger type. Think he will win tomorrow against this opposition on any track on the solar system but with it being Chester cant make my mind up to bet or not. O’Brien’s record in the race might just sway me to part with a tenner.

I have been looking at this horse for some time now. While sifting through a shed load of O’Brien staying types I noticed that this fellow was entered up in a ton of races, including the English and Irish Derbys, compared to his stablemates. The bare form of his debut win is nothing to write home about but neither was Feel Like Dancing’s win and I would rate Havana Beat the main danger after finishing 4th to Windhoek, who has won well again since and may run in the Dante en route to Epsom. I expect Ruler Of The World to show big improvement and it wouldn’t surprise me if he goes off odds on tomorrow.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’ve missed the boat regarding price 11/10 best now and I’ll leave it there with it being Chester.

The O’Brien runner is my nap of the meeting, so yes, I expect him to win, and will be… if he doesn’t.

Impressive in the end but beat very little.. also the fact that no horse has done the chester vase-derby double since shergar, is rather off-putting for epsom.

    still a nice little horse 8) 8)

Simple fact is if you followed Segal’s advice (which I didn’t) and took some of the double carpet on Monday night there was nothing in that performance to make you feel any less confident than you already were.

Unbeaten son of Galileo, trained by A P O’Brien. There have been worse 14/1 shots running in the Derby.

In truth he probably has 2 or 3 above him in the Ballydole pecking order but he could turn out to be anything.

I was in Ladbrokes today and there was a golden lock in price of 5/4 available up until £20,000 was laid on him. I was sorely tempted to stick £40 on to win £50 but instead settled on backing him at 25/1 for Epsom instead. If they were donkey’s he beat today it is surprising he went off at near evens in a "penalty kick"

Camelot was beating cuddies throughout last year, yet everyone was checking his sides for wings and urinating on statues of Nijinsky in anticipation of a new Racing God.

I’m happy with my 25/1, if he definitely runs and Battle Of Marengo is less than impressive next time up, Laddies won’t be offering 14/1 on the day. He won a group 3 today, yet Ladbrokes have Telescope at about a third of his odds on 5/1 having won a maiden only thus far. Telescope will progress but Ruler Of The World has already taken a big step forward and will again in my eyes. Plenty was made of the fact that he is a compact type and that Havana Beat would be covering the same ground in two strides that Ruler would take three for. If that was the case it didn’t do him a lot of good in terms of their finishing positions today. Looks like today’s winner can race prominently and he has no stamina issues, good assets if going to Epsom.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Nathan has it right in my opinion. Ruler Of The World looked like a real grinder there, getting stronger with every furlong in the final half mile. I haven’t checked the market, but this must be the St Leger favourite now.

Think i’ll have a punt on Willie the Whipper tomorrow in the dee stakes, which by the sounds of it will soon be downgraded to listed status.

Will love the rain that’s come, given he’s already won on heavy ground as a two year old, and although contributer looks solid, he hardly sets a terrifying standard.

If he is a grinder it seems odd that he is entered in the Irish 2000 Guineas and The Eclipse. Although I don’t expect for one minute that he’ll run in the former race, I assume he has been showing something to warrant those entries. Everyone is assuming Battle Of Marengo is the main contender from the yard but I think he’s silly odds at as low as 4/1 for Epsom, given that he has hardly looked like Dancing Brave himself thus far. The money has been piling on him since Sugar Boy scrambled home in the Classic Trial at Sandown and supposedly paid "A handsome compliment" to his old sparring partner. The horses Sugar Boy beat hardly looked like speedsters that day and Battle of Marengo needs to win his next race really well if he is to justify his short odds, particularly with Dawn Approach in the mix now.

As for Ruler Of The World, Ladbrokes have cut him in to 10/1 after "puffing their chest out" and holding him at 14/1 earlier on.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Shades of Toronado and the Craven. I know bookmakers are desperately trying to find alternatives to the favourite but surely the reaction to what was effectively not much more than another solo spin was ridiculous.

It’s a bit different surely? Toronado came in a lot shorter in the betting for the guineas than Ruler of the world is for the derby

Still I get the impression that trials are more or less irrelevant these days. Certainly in the guineas most winners of that race go there without a run, and you would also have to say that the guineas itself is easily the best trial for the derby

Bit pissed off there. Ended up backing this contributer in the end, he ran very well, but had no chance against that thing which looked like it had a rocket up it’s bum.

To be honest that was the most impressive performance in terms of the derby i’ve seen so far, this magician thing has so much speed

Hmmm may have jumped the gun there, just had a look at it’s pedigree and it’s by Galileo out of a Mozart mare who never raced further than 7 furlongs, must be a severe doubt about it getting the trip in the Derby.

In any case it looks a horse to follow

I thought you were backing O’Brien in all the trials?

Magician has a real mixed bag of entries from 1M to 1 1/2 Miles. He looked good at the trip today and with so many likely types, who are less exposed, in the yard he may stay away from Epsom. I note he is not entered in the Irish Derby and looking at what he beat today I would think The French Derby, where he wouldn’t have to face Dawn Approach, might be a better option for him? I know the runner up was mooted as a possible for that race, although I doubt they would want to take Magician on again.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
