Hmmm may have jumped the gun there, just had a look at it’s pedigree and it’s by Galileo out of a Mozart mare who never raced further than 7 furlongs, must be a severe doubt about it getting the trip in the Derby.
In any case it looks a horse to follow

I thought you were backing O’Brien in all the trials?
Magician has a real mixed bag of entries from 1M to 1 1/2 Miles. He looked good at the trip today and with so many likely types, who are less exposed, in the yard he may stay away from Epsom. I note he is not entered in the Irish Derby and looking at what he beat today I would think The French Derby, where he wouldn’t have to face Dawn Approach, might be a better option for him? I know the runner up was mooted as a possible for that race, although I doubt they would want to take Magician on again.
I was going to but can never get O’brien’s right!

Yeah I’d certainly agree with you there re the winner today. O’brien did mention that he had a lot of speed and that Ruleroftheworld was more the middle-distance type. But maybe he’ll take the view that the rest of his lot will lack the speed and brilliance to trouble dawn approach at Epsom and gamble with Magician? A lot will depend on how Mars performs in the Dante next week and of course Battle of Marengo in the Derrinstown.
May 10, 2013 at 20:10 #439228If he is a grinder it seems odd that he is entered in the Irish 2000 Guineas and The Eclipse.
Septimus, Golden Sword and Memphis Tennessee had the same entries in their years. It really doesn’t mean a great deal with Coolmore horses.
May 11, 2013 at 10:05 #439296I’ve got a sneaky feeling that Nevis will turn over this hot-pot Greatwood in the Lingfield derby trial today.
Rather surprising that it’s currently trading about 3-1 given the domination already shown by O’brien horses in the Derby trials.

I would agree with you if all the promising types were blanket entered but at the time I was looking at O’Brien’s Derby types there was a fair discrepancy with some only entered in the Derby, others entered in the Epsom and Irish Derbies, and others still entered in those and Guineas, Eclipse. I am assuming there must be some reasoning behind it all, even if it doesn’t pan out the way it is/was expected.
The race report for the Chester Vase on ATR reads:-
"tracked leader, led over 1f out, ridden and quickened clear final furlong"
That doesn’t sound like a grinder to me and I think anyone who saw Nevis win at Lingfield would be more inclined to call
him
a grinder by comparison to Ruler Of The World.
I saw Battle Of Marengo win today, and if Ruler Of The World
is
a grinder, then Battle Of Marengo must be as well because he looked nothing out of the ordinary today. If Aiden O’Brien
had
said Ruler Of The World was his best prospect, the horse would be about 4/1 now.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 12, 2013 at 17:54 #439457If Aidan does not know which one is the best then I expect none of them are good enough.
Having said that, perhaps Battle of Marengo just does not find much in front, rather like Sea The Stars, who won everything, but in workmanlike fashion.

That would be fair enough were he winning competitive races in that manner but, let’s face it, he has been odds on in all of his wins and was unable to shine at odds of 2/13 today. By comparison Sea The Stars won a 2000 Guineas at 8/1 to kick his season off and he usually travelled well in his races before drawing away, if not winning by as wide a margin as one might have expected at one stage of the race. I don’t think Battle Of Marengo would have troubled the judge at Newmarket and he has a long way to go in order to warrant comparison with Sea The Stars.
It is one of the mysteries of racing how one person sees something in a horse and other observers just don’t get the same vibe from the race. Battle of Marengo just hasn’t matched the hype for my money and I don’t see anything in his form to make me think he’ll win at Epsom.
Watch him do a Shergar now LOL

May 12, 2013 at 19:52 #439467Thought Battle Of Marengo won easily today, seemeed to have loads left.
Quite clear he is a lazy horse with how hard Joseph O’Brien had to get serious from a long way out but he was pretty much pushed out in the end when it approached the line.
Was no where near as bad as the Racing Post suggested and was pretty much lazy journalism.
That said its going to be hard for him to trouble Dawn Approach who just seems on a different planet so far, but put Dawn Approach in front of Battle of Marengo he is going to chase him hard, would love to see Fallon on Battle of Marengo, its very hard to see hm out the 3.
May 12, 2013 at 20:15 #439472This Derby is starting to take on shade’s of Sea the stars Derby when O’Brien threw everything he had at the Cox horse and still came up short.
I have some reservations about Dawn Approach getting the trip like everyone else, but if he does it’s difficult to imagine anything stabled at Ballydoyle beating him.
In fact i’d even go as far to say that O’Brien is the master at training very good horses- even extremely good horses, but he has very few truly GREAT horses.
In my opinion the only one of his Derby winners who was truly great was Galileo himself. High Chapparal and Camelot are very good horses indeed, but only Galileo took the breath away on the day itself.
May 13, 2013 at 18:45 #439533Which was the Cox horse?
May 13, 2013 at 18:46 #439534I woke up.You meant the Oxx horse.Sorry.
May 13, 2013 at 18:55 #439535Re; Battle Of Marengo
I cannot envisage this horse winning The Derby.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
May 13, 2013 at 20:06 #439542Sorry yes the Oxx horse!
Not that brilliant Clive Cox horse who romped home in the derby which nobody noticed!
June 4, 2013 at 22:18 #441838Fascinating reading in retrospect.Have nothing better to do.The curse of retirement.
June 4, 2013 at 22:24 #441840The time was terrible, but I have a strong suspicion he wasn’t named Ruler of the World because Magnier wanted to look a mug.
June 5, 2013 at 08:51 #441859Still looks tailor made for a tilt at the Leger to me but having won the Derby that possibility looks a little slim now.

Confirmed he goes to The Curragh.
