Yeah, Invitation Only was very poor yesterday, and he didn’t look anything special at all, though I’d agree, on that evidence, I thought it looked as if a step up in trip was the last thing he wanted. Time will tell with him I suppose, but connections must have a few more up their cuff, who could be just as good.

I’m glad you mentioned Finians Oscar, as after a long day at work, I didn’t think there was much appeal in trying to catch any of the days racing, but that was a worth a watch, and he looks very decent. The Neptune is a fair shout. I don’t mind Coleman, though a couple of years back, when I was having some real joy from the Venetia Williams yard, Liam Treadwell invariably seemed to be on board. The horse Coleman was on today in that race, Cona River, I’ll keep an eye on him definitely, considering connections.

I’d say Ordinary World is 100% certain to get a Grand Annual entry, but I’m hoping he goes Arkle, not just because I still believe he’s way overpriced, but also because I’m so bloody keen on Sizing Platinum for that race.

For Aidan Coleman read Tom O’Brien. I am afraid I backed Sizing Platinum today. Can’t say he would have won but he was in pole position. Having got low at the previous fence I really don’t why O’Brien felt the need to try and win the race 4 out. So many races change up that straight. I much prefer jockeys who are positive but there is a time and a place. I am beginning to think that Richard Johnson is the only jock punters can trust.

Just come via your Lexus thread. Has someone said Empire Of Dirt is going to run? It wouldn’t surprise be if he ran well but stepping up from handicaps to Grade 1 company I think you want everything in your favour. Soft ground and three miles isn’t his ideal. If by some miracle the ground dried up it would give him a much better chance. Perhaps the greater speed test of the King George would have been more suitable? He would surely have had a better chance than the two Gigginstown outsiders?

Watched the Sizing Platinum race today, and no consolation to you I know, but he would have won that for sure, and the jockey probably was to blame, horse hadn’t been asked a question when he went for it. He remains of serious interest to me for The Grand Annual.

I’ve not parted with any cash for Empire of Dirt in The Lexus, but I think, ground permitting anyway, he might just surprise a few people. Having said that, The King George did look tailor made for him, and thought he was worth a go. I’ve seen varying weather reports, and I think ground conditions remain hard to predict, even this close to the race.

    Good luck with Ordinary World.

I haven’t decided what to do yet. The ground is my big concern. He is 0/3 on the track but some of those you can just ignore because of the ground. I am leaning towards backing Identity Thief as without doubt he should be favourite. He has better hurdling and chasing form than Min. Hopefully, there will be a market without Identity Thief. If the ground is too testing I wouldn’t expect Russell to give Ordinary World a hard time. Had it been me I would probably have given Ordinary World an entry in the Desert Orchid. It might actually be an easier ask than either of the two novices and he would have probably got his favoured ground. Whatever happens I wouldn’t be rushing to wave a white flag regarding Cheltenham.

Trawled through all the cards and it is a pretty disappointing day. You know it is pretty desperate when you end up backing one of Nick Gifford’s!

Cheers stilvi, yeah, I won’t be unduly concerned if he doesn’t win, but at 33’s, I had to have a go, and I’d be happy with second. As long as there’s not a repeat of Ttebbob in the same race last year.

Good luck if you do play with Identity Thief, 2’s is not my kind of price, but it does look fair.

Yeah, a pretty uninspiring Boxing Day Card on the whole. At 14’s, 16’s I could be interested in Wakanda for The Rowland Meyrick, while Caolaneoin 16’s at Limerick, Snowball 12’s at Fontwell, and Doesyourdogbite 7’s at Kempton look of interest.

I don’t think it could possibly get any worse than Ttebbob. 2/1 isn’t my sort of price either. My record with shorties is dire and it certainly isn’t what I would look to base a year-end profit on. I think the sensible bet would probably be to lay Min but as you know I don’t do exchanges.

I will just be watching the King George and I am fully prepared for my Gold Cup bet on Thistlecrack to be bin material after tomorrow. As I said on the other thread I don’t think either of front two are/will be suited to Kempton. Cue Card usually displays speed in abundance but last year it appeared Kempton reduced him to looking like a dour stayer and I can’t help thinking back to Thistlecrack blundering away his chance at the Punchestown Festival. No doubt he has improved since then but I don’t think he particularly wants a speed test, particularly at this stage of his career. I remember the usually solid jumping Coneygree struggling a little in the Feltham prior to the race falling apart. Despite the winning distance it was certainly his worst round of jumping.

Let’s just hope they all complete.

I was probably in the same boat as you today stilvi re: Min, but I suppose he was solid enough, and Identity Thief was bitterly disappointing. My eyes were obviously fixed on Ordinary World though, and I was absolutely delighted with him, and even happier to collect on the 33’s. He would probably have finished closer but for nodding at the last, and gives me renewed hope that he’ll make it to The Arkle. What did you think of him?

Was chuffed to bits to get the 12’s on Thistlecrack, and I’m fairly sure it’s the first time I’ve ever had the winner of the race. Never a big betting race for me, and I normally side with an outsider, but although not my biggest bet of the season, happy with the 12’s nonetheless. Wakanda got me a few quid back, and he’s worth keeping him in mind for something like The Peter Marsh, while I seriously think Doesyourdogbite could figure at Cheltenham, and I was very pleased to have him at 9’s for the win. I have The Albert Bartlett in mind for him.

Any thoughts on todays action? I’ve given my thoughts on the threads for The Welsh National & Paddy Power, while away from those races, I like Cliff House, De Name Escapes Me, and Swamp Fox in the handicap hurdle at Leapordstown, while The Worlds End at Chepstow, Pairofbrowneyes at Limerick, and Opening Batsman at Kempton all catch my eye.

    Well done on yesterday.

Other than Poker School (thanks to Richard Johnson yet again) I had a pretty shocking day. Sometimes I should take my own advice!

I am trying to take some positives out of Ordinary World. It was disappointing that he ridden that way because the expectation that he would serve it up to Min on the front end was a big part of my theory in taking the favourite on. At least he has shown that he doesn’t have to lead. They clearly didn’t think they could beat Min and almost certainly it would a similar story with Altior so realistically he is probably playing for one place if he goes Arkle. Perhaps Identity Thief has ‘gone’ and Yorkhill and Buveue D’Air will go elsewhere? It was frustrating to see Identity Thief throw in the towel on this occasion rather than his previous run. You couldn’t have predicted that sort of performance.

Up to now I have found myself trying to defend Thistlecrack and indeed have backed him for the Gold Cup. That said I think people are going overboard about yesterday as that bare form is almost certainly way below the requirement to win a Gold Cup.

Nothing special today. I have gone with Native River in the Welsh Grand National. If he can avoid mistakes something similar to last time might well be good enough. I think Onenightinvienna has ‘gone’. In addition I have backed Ibis Du Rheu and Anteros at Chepstow. Despite the weight Ibis Du Rheu might be a class above and hoping softer ground might help Anteros find a couple of pounds. Will be watching Kings Tempest in the first and This Is It in the last. At Kempton I like Nordic Nymph and Morello Royale in the mares race. Shame about the jockeys. At Leopardstown will be keeping an eye on De Name Escapes Me and Ice Cold Soul in the big handicap.

    Good luck.

Gigginstown run five in Lexus but leave out a horse who could easily be better than any of them. Unbelievable. Looks like they are going to throw away his whole season on the back of one fruitless mission. Is it too late for another Villain of the Year nomination? I didn’t think anyone could top Hobbs and Onenightinvienna but these bunch of dimwits have surpassed it with ease.

Better day today. It didn’t start very well with Kings Tempest who although a lovely stamp of horse clearly hasn’t got much in the jumping and galloping department. He was nursed around and it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t see him again. Ibis Du Rheu would have gone very close with Richard Johnson on board. Unfortunately, it was STD and he didn’t do anything like enough at the obstacles. Sometimes a jockey needs to lead the horse. No problems with the mares hurdle, Nordic Nymph and Morello Royale were not far off the one-two. The winner has a good attitude and might well be able to win again. Richard Johnson was top class on Native River. He didn’t have an easy time on the front end and similar to yesterday’s winner he was struggling a little in the early stages. He rode through the doubts. With Johnson on board it wouldn’t be such a surprise if Native River gives Thistlecrack something to think about. I didn’t back him but Ice Cold Soul shaped much better than his finishing position in the handicap hurdle. The jock appeared to run into the back of a wall of horses after the second last. Ended up backing both Caderyn and This Is It in the concluding bumper. Caderyn was almost certainly the one who benefited most from the testing ground and he looks a nice staying prospect. This Is It still shaped nicely in fifth.

Plenty of impressive winners today but I was most taken by the jumping of Charli Parcs in the juvenile. I wanted to add him to Defi Du Seuil but with JP who knows what is going to happen? If I knew today’s winner was heading for the Supreme I would make him the favourite.

At this stage just Snow Falcon tomorrow. Hoping the rain stays away and that fall hasn’t knocked his confidence.
