Just looked at videos of Wings of eagles previous races, yes it finished well at chester but nothing that would suggest it might be a derby winner.

    RIP epsom derby. :negative:

What a race. I don’t think Wings of Eagles should be dismissed purely because of ratings. He ran very well at Chester behind Venice Beach, finishing with the same powerful surge, I certainly thought he was the one to take from that race.

The two Frakels were a credit to supporters, Cracksman in particular saw out the trip well despite looking really unbalanced at times, coming around Tottenham Corner I thought he was a goner.

Cliffs of Moher definitely found the improvement I thought he would, if not to the full extent. He is still a big raw, immature horse and I echo Aidan’s sentiment that his next race will be one to look forward to, the Irish Derby most likely. I’ll be amazed if he doesn’t go off favourite for that.

I haven’t seen enough of the others to give my thoughts now, but congratulations to anyone who saw something in the winner after his Chester run and backed him, he was a deserved winner I think.

I thought that was a great race to watch personally, and a better Derby than people will give it credit for. Would love to see a rematch between these.

The two Frankels ran brilliantly and definitely stayed. Cracksman was quite babyish, had to be chased along at times and was in arguably in the worst position being closer to the hot pace, yet he somehow still incredibly found enough in him to come back at Cliffs Of Moher after being overtaken. The latter sweated up really badly pre-race and that may have cost him late on, but he did show a remarkable turn of foot to hit the front. Eminent was very unlucky, was staying on very well but based on the overhead view could barely sprint in that final furlong. And, as for the winner, time will tell whether it was a fluke or not, but he clearly stays very well.

Very intrigued to see how that result works out next time, doubt it will be the same. The Irish Derby could be a very intriguing contest if they all show up.

First derby winner to run at cheltenham? I notice bookies have priced him up as the 12-1 fav for the 2018 triumph hurdle, personally I had him down as a fred winter type myself ;-)

Lot of improvement to come from the first 4 of which the winner was the most experienced with 5 previous runs – the time of 2m33.02 is only 1.30s slower than Workforce’s track record and 0.30s slower than Golden Horn’s time so I think it is way to early to be writing the death knell of the race.

The oaks winner Enable would kick all of those into touch.

Can’t believe people are saying that’s actually a decent derby.

Looking back to page 1 of this Thread and have to congratulate ‘Threenaps’ who pinpointed Wings Of Eagles as far back as last September 2016..he’s unavailable for comment at the moment as just booking his round the World cruise. ;-)
Well done threenaps just for pinpointing him..hope you got some good prices and backed him. :good:

One thing I’m absolutely certain about is that I’ll be taking on the winner next time it runs, even though it probably won’t be a short price.

The first thing I noticed when I was a kid and I got into racing is that horses that win at big prices almost always get turned over next time out- maybe the effort of running at their maximum takes it out of them.

Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner never won another race.

Judge – to be fair mate nobody can say with any certainty that it was a good or bad Derby yet though I would admit that, at this moment, it looks sub-standard. The first four have finished close up which suggests that there is no standout star but I would be surprised if this race doesn’t throw up some very good horses. In terms of ratings I see they have given Wings Of Eagles 120 which is below par but you would have to think that one or two in behind would be capable of improving on their figures given their inexperience. Apart from the winner, the cream rose to the top and I think you will see them hold their own in top company this year.

Time will tell as always but it was won in a fast time and was a tremendously exciting race. I hope we can all agree on that!

It certainly wasn’t a vintage renewal or winner, but I think we should at least wait to see how the form holds up before completely writing it off. I think both Cliffs of Moher and Cracksman will have lofty targets ahead of them, while the winner will be sure to go well in the Leger.

I think backers of Douglas McArthur might feel a bit unfortunate that he was chosen for sacrificial duty, as he stayed on well past his expiry date. Unless he’s given the same thankless task in the Irish, I think he could be one to keep an eye on at big prices.

Just because Enable won by a clear margin (against a non stayer may I add) doesn’t mean that she is automatically better because the 1st 4 were covered by less than 2L, even though they went hard in the Derby the time was still 1.11s faster than the Oaks.

Far too early to be making sweeping statements like that.

I can’t be bothered to analyse it anyway, I feel sick, although not a sick as if I was on cliffs of moher. All I can feel is pain for his backers.

Horse racing a mugs game, bookies clean up.

Yep, agree. Think Cliffs Of Moher and Cracksman are two exciting horses to look forward to, given their inexperience and all the wrong they did today. As for Eminent, nevermind the doubts about him not staying the trip, he even looks like he could be a Leger horse to me even though I don’t think connections will be brave enough to go there.

Y’know I read that first page of the thread the other day and made a note of Waldgeist but ignored the winner#mustpaymoreattentioninfuture To be fair to myself, though when I back a longshot I have to have a reason for it, even if it’s just that it’s got a pretty face. I did, fleetingly think it was a nice name, though.

Would be really interested to know what price he got in end…could have been 66/1 or even higher..whatevet he got it was an inspired shout :good: Jac

@Joni…Great summary and although we are disappointed that our Frankel didn’t sire his first Group winner you can’t deny Wings Of Eagles came with blistering burst of speed to grab the honours. I think Snow Knight at 50/1 was the biggest price Derby winner to date.
I thought Eminent was denied a clear run twice but Jim Crowley never had that perfect position that Mick Kinane talked about when he won the race on Sea The Stars, he certainly has the stamina and both himself and Cracksman will win next time out..please put them in different races B-) Cliffs Of Moher also ran a great race in second place he sweated up badly but proved it was part of his nature rather than anything amiss.
Lessons learnt .. time to celebrate the winner and start looking harder at the next batch of 2yos because somewhere out there is the winner of The Derby 2018 :rose:
Ps ..Steve will be opening that Thread around 3 seconds after I post this
