Winner was impressive, very similar to Lamtarra’s win i thought, no hard luck stories at all. The horses everyone said would improve did so, but the winner improved more for the step up in trip after his eyecatching run last time.

I think the top 4 will win some good races, and Capri is tailor made for the Leger. Time will tell no doubt.

Take out the winner and the first three in the market would have filled the first three places. Would people have been knocking the form then?

The winner is clearly much improved; his performance today made me think of Cheltenham, when horses who have been pottering through the mud in small fields all winter suddenly get a big field, good ground and an end-to-end gallop and elevate their form to a whole new level. Wings Of Eagles was clearly suited by the strong pace and better ground and won a shade cosily in the end; if Ballydoyle continue to set races up for him, I can see him clearing up in the top middle distance events this summer even though his immediate pursuers today, Cracksman in particular, are likely to continue to improve. Wings Of Eagles took an age to find his stride today and one would imagine that the more galloping nature of The Curragh and Doncaster will suit him down to the ground.

Just reflecting on tactics – interesting that Ballydoyle decided to make it a searching gallop but that Ryan ignored it. I wonder if they knew Frankie would try and follow the pace and so they could then pick up the pieces. i.e. they deliberately went too quick. Or am I reading too much into it?

One thing for certain is I would feel a little hard done-by if I had backed Douglas Macarthur. Bit like I felt when I backed Hydrangea in the English Guineas…….

Actually this is why punters continually feel like they get put away. Why wasn’t Wings of eagles ridden like Douglas Macarthur was? Because they presumably knew he would run a much bigger race- not that they’d ever tell us. :negative:

you can’t be serious. If Wings of eagles cleans up, I will give up the game.

Ps ..Steve will be opening that Thread around 3 seconds after I post this

I have lost faith in backing them ante-post for the Derby, the way it has been panning out the traditional 2yo trials have been throwing up poor contenders.

I don’t think much of today’s race. Some say it’s too early to judge but there is money to be made in taking an early view.

The Racing Post have awarded 121 as a rating. I feel that might be generous. Whatever anyone feels it is less than last year’s race and that turned out to be a load of welly. I can’t believe people are still throwing good money at US Army Ranger every time he runs.

Cliffs Of Moher didn’t get home today and Eminent should have been able to outpace these if he had stayed completely, as a Guineas horse taking on mostly lower rated opponents today. Tartini failing off 95 in a handicap had put doubt on the quality of Best Solution and Cracksman today. Best Solution had lined up one of the best rated today on 113 and I don’t think he ran to the 109 mark he was awarded today. The Racing Post have given Douglas MacArthur as running exactly to his mark today on 111 and the way he was ridden today, at a suicidal, sacrificial, pace leaves me to think that the notion is bollocks. Permian ran far worse than 7 lbs below his best and Capri is supposed to have recorded a personal best by 3 lbs today.

Time will tell of course but I am happy with the way I assessed last years race moments after it finished.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Just had a quick look through my bets on the race

I had the winner @ 60.0 for £5 a couple of weeks ago

Also had a few in running bets today that got matched, which was surprising

    Doug Mag @ 3.0
    Capri @ 5.0
    Wings of Eagle £20 @ 20.0

I suppose i can always say i backed the winner

I think you look too much into these ratings steve, I myself have never bothered with them too much, especially RPR’s. They never seem to give a consistent representation of form, highlighted by the inaccuracy of the ratings of today’s runners. However I’m sure they’ve served you well over the years so each to their own.

It wasn’t a vintage Derby but I think some nice types will come out of it going forward, and I’m certainly looking forward to the rematch. I’d wager it will turn out better than last year’s crop.

“Looking back to page 1 of this Thread and have to congratulate ‘Threenaps’ who pinpointed Wings Of Eagles as far back as last September 2016..he’s unavailable for comment at the moment as just booking his round the World cruise. ;-)
Well done threenaps just for pinpointing him..hope you got some good prices and backed him. :good:”

Many thanks Typtych and Voleur, I liked his breeding but because he had not achieved much in his career I did not back him !!! Kicking myself now, the cruise will have to wait…

Must admit that I’ve never forgotten the name of the Derby winner by 7pm the same day but it happened tonight! All the same, they are all still improving horses and it’s too soon to write the race off. I think the first 5 will turn out to be decent, though maybe not legends (first 6 maybe with Capri worth a shot at a mile & 2f on softer ground).

I’d like to put in a word for Benbatl. He trailed the field until 3 furlongs out (to the extent that I thought he might be pulled up) but then somehow ran on to be 5th. He’s been ridden prominently in his previous races so I’d be interested to know if this was the plan, or if he couldn’t go the early pace, didn’t handle the track etc. Perhaps they thought he wouldn’t stay. Since he obviously did, I’ll be backing him next time and hoping that he’s ridden with a bit more confidence.

You could be right with Capri Botchy. I was happy with him today, finishing 6th, but not much more
than 3 lengths off the winner. He’s a galloper, it’s just a pity for him that Epsom managed to dodge
most of the rain. I thought turning for home that he might win, he kept on well but lacked any kick.
With some juice in the ground he would have been closer. The Leger is worth consideration with him,
it will be interesting to see what O’Brien’s plans are. As I said some time back, there was no
“monster” in the race this year, but I’m not sure it’s just as bad a race as maybe some think. Time
will tell on that one, lets see how they do from here.

Had the winner been 6/4 he’d be getting Dancing Brave comparisons based on that run and it would be rash and costly to write the form off.

If he’d been badly outpaced and given a nice run round from there to find himself steadily picking everything off as they all collapsed I could see the point of criticism

He got slightly outpaced for a few strides coming into Tattenham Corner (in 3rd last position) but was soon back on the bridle. From there he had a nightmare run being hampered twice, the second time quite seriously and certainly enough to finish a horse with less heart.

Having had to rebuild momentum from that error, a furlong out he looks in an impossible position, but he wins it really sweetly with a fair bit in hand under a very cool ride close home.

Given the pace the Arc is usually run at and the hustle and bustle that often ensues, 25/1 is a daft price for this Derby Winner.
