Thankfully this sport is essentially about the horses despite a number of its human participants managing to portray it in an even dimmer light since the verdict was announced. That said the likes Steve Mellish, Paul Hayward and Ruby Walsh have provided thoughtful contributions.
The “rancid” comment should not be used as a smokescreen to sidestep the real issue of the case. It is extremely disappointing that the PJA still refuse in the face of the verdict to acknowledge that one of their members has been bullied and it’s shameful they have chosen to conflate the outcome with their legitimate grievances about weighing room conditions.
I’d expect Bryony will be reconsidering her membership.
My take is that horse racing is not diminished in any way by the absence of a crowd.
Definitely a plus at Royal Ascot as we did not have to endure all the fluff and nonsense about fashion, food and celebrities.
Type of case that the BHA can’t win with in my opinion.
Hayley’s high profile and if they give her a slap across the wrist they would be accused in some corners of “one rule for the rich” so to speak, yet given there is clearly no skull-duggery here a ban then starts to look disproportionate especially when you consider the issue of non-triers.
I did smile at the comment of “Three months is a quarter of a year of not earning any money”. Given she’d quit and has built up a nice media career I’d be surprised if she’ll be suffering severe financial hardship until March.
I read the guideline entry point is 18 months so the ban handed out does appear to take (some) consideration of the circumstances.
On balance an improvement on C4 and the documentary pieces have been excellent, although there do seem to be too many presenters with a not a lot to do.
Interviews with winning Trainers/Jockeys will nearly always be banal but it’s not just a racing problem, it’s the same with all sports.
Here, here Steeplechasing.
Makes you realise how lucky we were to see Frankel run a 4YO career.
Gave up on the Morning Line years ago and simply us C4HD to watch races. Then it’s back over to RUK for previews/discussion.
Works well for me

Only time will tell….
Well done 32*** you’ve got the reaction you wanted and everyone is talking about your brand, "yawn".
You must be so pleased.
I expect hundreds if not thousands will now sign up for an account on the back of this. It’s marketing genius I tell you.
You only hear what they want you to hear.
Nothing to do with conspiracy theories just a fact of life.
There will always be more to the story than the press release or conference tells you. Think it’s called news management.
Are we expecting the bookies to telegraph the winner to us?
It would be nice but wouldn’t last too long.
When has any sportsman ever said anything enightening in any advert/interview/press conference for the past decade or so.
The Management/PR people have everything so tied up that it’s just a waste of everyone’s time with all the obvious cliches muttered about what’s just happened or what’s coming up.
Gave up taking any notice a long time ago.
To be fair having watched the RUK replay programme this morning the only peron Lydia Hislop mentioned the subject to first was J P McManus which I regarded as showing empathy.
On all the other occasions in the post race interviews it was the interviewee that raised the subject if it was mentioned.
Sign of the times as you point out.
Only watched the races on RUK and had other things to do between them but surprised that Lydia Hislop has followed that tack.
Since I started taking an interest in racing there has always been the suggestion that the big owners will disappear overseas because of the poor prize money etc.
As of yet I’ve not seen it really happen.
In football you constantly hear that the bubble will burst but again still waiting.
Modify for me.
Remove drop fences and reduce the number of runners to 25.It is a race which captures the public attention like no other which has to be an asset for racing but radical changes must be made rather than triming an inch off a fence here and there and installing showers.
Even as a racing fan I must say I find the National quite unedifying viewing when there appears an even money chance that a quarter of the field will fall or be brought down.
Do we watch any other race with that likelihood?
Not the most gracious of comments.
That said just throws into focus the ridiculous prize money for the National in comparison to other races and also that old chestnut regarding the measure used.
At the end of the day a rider made a mistake.
Nothing stupid about it, just human error.
We’ve all been there in some circumstance or another.
"We’re set fair for a good days racing."
Popular on the Morning Line.
