At the end of the day a rider made a mistake.
Nothing stupid about it, just human error.
We’ve all been there in some circumstance or another.
December 10, 2011 at 17:53 #381987Personally, I like watching the Cross Country races as they offer something different from the normal diet we have in this country (variety is the spice of life etc…)
Like AngloGerman mentioned, it is the jockey’s job to know which route to take (and compared to some of the French XC courses such as Pau, Croan or the Pardubice course in the Czech Rep, Cheltenham’s – highly sanitised – XC course is a doddle to learn.
In the case of yesterdays race, if Cheltenham had set up another 40 yards of fixed rail the carnage that ensued almost certainly would not have happened – although the jocks should have known the New Course finish was in use.
I actually think that if the XC discipline was expanded (e.g. a race at Cheltenhams Hunter Evening – ground conditions pending of course – and maybe a second course up North, more people would gain an interest as with more runners having the opportunity to take up the discipline and more form lines could be encouraged through more opportunities rather then it being seen as an abhorration in the calendar.

Ian Mc would have fun with that!!!

Problems with the courses up north is they use the middle as a golf course, p2p track or are simply too small. Great idea, put it to the BHA!

December 10, 2011 at 21:22 #382027Not keen on these races but would not object if they put them on as last race of the meeting for those who think it worth staying. Not sure why an esteemed brand like Glenfarclas wants to get involved with this. Scotsmac or Vagrant`s Choice would be more like it.
For me, Cheltenham do not do nearly enough to define the course.Would a few weighted motorway cones at the intersection have been too much trouble? They could not even get the direction signs for the entrance to the car park right yesterday.
December 10, 2011 at 21:50 #382035Does anyone know how many of these races end like this each year, is it more than dangerous riding, misuse of the whip and where could this argument end up – fields of six running in dolled off lanes, hands and heels only, no turns?
December 11, 2011 at 13:21 #382108But would it do any harm to have a bit of tape at the end of the race to guide the jockeys onto the right course? Especially given that a horse could have died because of what happened. Don’t they do something like that at the end of the National?

You’re dead right Moehat, there is no excuse for Cheltenham not helping riders out with a bit of tape.
Then again, may be I’ve got early onset alzhiemers. Runs in my family.
Although the docs say it is not herreditory.
Value Is EverythingDecember 11, 2011 at 15:23 #382142I guess there’s no hope for a sport that still uses knicker elastic at the start of races, therfore sat nav is definately out of the question…?
December 11, 2011 at 15:38 #382147Interesting that W Mullins in today’s RP says Cheltenham should take part of the blame. Unusually for Ed Gillespie he’s not putting his hands up to it but I’m confident there will be signage/briefing/dolling off changes for March which will in themselves be an admission of culpability so he should offer an apology now.

December 11, 2011 at 20:57 #382209Why get rid of it?
Its a spectacle for old horse that lost there way. Just like the Hunter chase.
Maybe these sort of people want to change Beechers or the Chair into a normal fence.
Game is on a slippery slope with madness like this.
