This is an interesting race but certainly not a vintage King George…..Telescope as favourite tells you all you need to know and there isn’t a horse in the field that has proved itself as a Champion in any sense yet and even though it is an interesting race it is a below par KG for me.
July 21, 2014 at 20:27 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #486112Mick Fitzgerald constantly interupting McGrath was breathtaking and as usual what he was interrupting with was banal trivia……really poor.
I’ll leave the condescending and slightly racist sounding stuff to others but I also don’t think Rishi is anchor material for a big day’s racing but I dont think bringing his ethnicity into it is is anyway helpful or indeed acceptable.
In any case his overall contribution is considerably better than Mick Fitzgerald for example.
The programme flounders for me without McGrath and Cunningham working together providing their generally excellent insight into horses form and the show would benefit greatly from not sodding about with the replays of archive races in particular……on Eclipse day there were any amount of brilliant previous Eclipse finishes shown but instead of showing the final 2 furlongs with the proper commentary we had silly effects and loud music and winners going past the post….really frustrating and doing nothing to promote the sport.
This seems the clearest proof yet that jockeys do bet unless we’re being asked to believe that this is only confined to when they are in India???
Probably close to impossible to stop but I’m afraid it is the next door neighbour to non trying and stopping horses therefore all perpetrators need to be dealt with very seriously in terms of bans in order to deter others………as ‘Dwyer’ clearly alludes to in the phone call it needs to be made to be’not worth the risk’.
I don’t get the argument that says jockeys win because they break the whip rules…..the whip rules are about how racing presents itself to the public i.e so that our sport doesn’t look to be about beating animals with whips in the name of sport…its about PR and surely nobody is suggesting that results should be changed because whip rules have been broken???
The Gold Cup would be a perfect example of the rules being justifiably broken in that the winner idled and hung and needed every stroke that he was given.
The rules need to be changed so that more discretion and judgment can be used by both jockeys and stewards but the ‘should have been disqualified’ argument baffles me.
June 18, 2014 at 15:10 in reply to: Big blow for Channel 4 Racing as Derby only pulls in 1.5m #482884I never realised just how vacuous and irritating Gok Wan is…..patent lack of chemistry with Claire especially when he talks over her with the meaningless drivel and cliches he constantly comes out with and a voice in terms of suitability for a broadcaster that makes Mick Fitzgerald sound like Orson Welles ……….awful awful awful…..by far the worst person they have ever brought in to do the fashion ( and there have been some horrors up to now)
There is something irritating about the way Gosden communicates these days…joyless and boring soundbites that I think are meant to come across as clever but sound smug, condescending and smart arsed instead……..they leave me less than cold….how about looking and sounding like you enjoy winning rather than trying to sound like you knew what was going to happen all along?
Intriguing Guardian piece ……….I think the Hollywood producers might need a call if Fallon really does end up as anything like 1st jockey to Godolphin. An incredible career.
Night Of Thunder should never have been 40-1…a shock that he reversed with Kingman yes but unbeaten until then with a documented good home reputation and no surprise to see him in the frame.
Yet again Mr Nicholls is shown to be lacking in class by kicking a man when he is down.
Loyalty is an important quality and the mark of a man and this particularly stinks as Daryl Jacob is out injured and emerges with a lot of class for seemingly telling Nicholls where he can stick his job as the stable number 2.
There was no need to dump Jacob ,STD could have been brought in alongside and they could have shared the rides even if the ultimate intention was to phase Jacob out but to dump him for no reason while he is out injured is a poor reflection on Nicholls and not how a gentleman behaves.
This kind of early season result is what makes the game fascinating but all hype aside getting narrowly beat by Cirrus Des Aigles is no disgrace for ANY horse.
Seperate point: Who on earth was doing the commentary on the Ganay on Sunday……..was it Tanya’s posh long lost brother ……..was I alone in thinking the Mrs Bouquet attempts at French pronounciations sounded absolutely terrible as did the failure of the commentary to progress and climax with the race. Poor, amateurish and detracted badly from what should have been an early season highlight.
Stop using Tanya to do preview voice overs that in the old days Alistair Down or someone of that kind of ability would have done……..Tanya is incapable of gravitas or generating excitement or a sense of making viewers look forward to a forthcoming event…..in fact far from it when she does these voice-overs she sounds like she is reading a script that she doesn’t really understand……the emphases are all over the place….anyone on the team could do it a million times better than her.
She did a preview of the contenders for the 1000 guineas on the ML this morning and made it sound utterly insignificant……..she simply isn’t any good at being a broadcaster but giving her high profile stuff just rubs it in all the more.
March 14, 2014 at 14:23 in reply to: Channel 4 Presenters – Sorry But Bring The Old Team Back #471764I’m enjoying the coverage this week and Graham Cunningham in particular has turned out to be excellent but generally they could do without all of the patronising drivel being aimed at Daryl Jacob who it seems certain sections of the media have got the knife out for and C4 racing seem to enjoy joining in putting him under pressure as if anything he achieves is the unexpected success of an under achiever…..leave him alone.
Unproven on ground that isn’t soft in anyway but in a sub standard field overall LI must make the shortlist behind BB and SC……….especially as Davy Russell rates him superior to Sir Des Champs

…….If anyone cares to try and seriously demonstrate how he is not at the forefront of ANY discussion about the best there has ever been I would be interested to consider it…..but I’m not holding my breath.
4000 winners +?
If anyone’s record speaks for itself its A P McCoy’s…..
From one non-job to another for someone who called themselves a racing manager yet didn’t make it their business to know that one of his bosses trainers was cheating.

Horses not running on their merits is bad news for all punters and the wider reputation of the sport and as has been said before the temptation to not run horses on their merits is attributable to poor prize money which in turn is created by too much racing.
