I do like John Gosden but sometimes his pessimism leaves me cold.
Yes, Ghost of Rob Roy, Gosden comes across as a really nice bloke. So much so that I laugh when I see photos of him, and reflect that because of it, even his most vehement critics seem to hold hold back at least a little. Even old Gordie sounds more brassed off and bitter than actually rancorous.
‘Johnny Gosden’ says it all. That’s pretty affable towards a proper toff, even spoken ironically. You couldn’t imagine calling Stoute, Mick, or John Dunlop, Johnny, could you?
Wonderful photo of John on one of the racing sites today or yesterday. Striding purposefully towards, i.e. in the direction of the camera, serious, if slightly puzzled, expression on his face. Honest as the day is long.
If ever so slightly confusing when explaining his concerns about his horses to us punters!
June 9, 2014 at 19:12 #481827Better still though Joni, you suggest I’m a bit hard on John Gosden and yet he was singled out by Nick,Graeme and even boring sit on the fence Jimbo Mcgrath as an individual who gets
"well quoted"
,that for someone like yourself who’s rose tinted glasses need cleaning is suggesting that he talks a lot of rubbish, contrary, hypocritical, condascending rubbish.
Talk about hearing what you want to hear Gord!
"Well quoted", means the man is extremely eloquent and has a lot of interesting things to say / worth listening to.
Did you 2 muppets actually see the conversation regarding Gosdens unique interview style by Luck,Cunnningham and Mcgrath? Ginge cant see the wood from the trees in any form so I can forgive his incapable way of assessing humans. As for you Joni,Mr articulate himself I can only assume you didn’t see the conversation ‘live’ on Saturday afternoon or you would have seen the tone of what was said was clearly having a little dig at Gosdens quotes to the press, there were sniggers about his contradictions in interviews and the ‘Very Quotable’ phrase used was clearly aimed at the fact that when John Gosden talks not everyone takes him seriously.Proves its not just me that can see through his nonsense.Like I said,I can forgive Ginge for being a poor assessor of Human characters but for someone who is a Professional coach of articulation its almost inconceivable that you too cant see the wood from the trees in what was a simple case of ‘reading between the lines’ of what the 3 of them were suggesting and all 3 were suggesting exactly the same thing I have on here.Very dissapointed in you two!
June 9, 2014 at 21:03 #481837I did see it – just seen it again actually as I taped it. Nothing like what you are making out. There was some very light hearted banter from Jim only about John playing down Tagroodha’s chances. GC also said that John should stick to training not betting as he had said Australia would be a 1-2 shot if it hadn’t rained. Doesn’t look such a foolish thing to say now does it? Nick Luck did say he was quotable but there was no hint of irony in his comment. And he’s right – he IS quotable, that’s why he is such a good interviewee.
Gord you have an agenda against John Gosden and nothing more I say will make you change your mind. Fair enough – I’ll leave it there.

June 16, 2014 at 22:52 #482620Well, John Gosden doesn’t sound confident about Kingman tomorrow. He’s declared it is far from a two horse race and he reckons it should be evens between his colt and Night Of Thunder. Richard Hannon agrees the horses should be the same odds as one another.
It all contrasts to Cirrus Des Aigles’ trainer, who calmly and frankly declared "Yes, he’ll win" when popped the question before the Coronation Cup.
That’s not his style but I’d love, just once, to hear him say:-
"Pi55er City" when asked how his horse was going to run

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

More chance of his hangers-on Ginge and Joni telling us first Steve. We as Punters always take to the more colourful characters of this beautiful game than those who are shall we say bland and Grey. The biggest problem John Gosden has is not only is he painfully non-commital but he contradicts himself constantly and that doesn’t sit well with those of us who admire confidence.
June 17, 2014 at 15:37 #482697Delighted for Johnny G. What a horse that is and couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke.

June 17, 2014 at 15:46 #482700Like many fans of Kingman, I kept faith with the horse after his Guineas defeat. I said after that he would beat the winner next time they met ( we’ll have to wait until Ascot for that ) and would prove himself the beat miler around.
He quickened as I expected, and even though the early pace was quite slow, Kingman showed he his a class above these rivals. I expect him to see Hannon’s Guineas winner off without too much trouble in their third meeting.
Call me a prophet … or simply just a realist and good judge.

Kingman destroyed Night Of Thunder, and the others,as I knew he would. That performance was stunning and for me, sets Kingman out as the best all age miler in Europe.

Some foolish, over-confident punters can not understand that every horse in every race have
positives
and
negatives
. John Gosden will tell you (as he sees it) both those things. Foolish punters call this "non-commital" and say he "contradicts himself".

For sure this was one occasion where the "pi55er city" preview would have been justified.
Despite John Gosden’s low profile demeanour and Richard Hannon’s insistence that both colts should have been 6/4 in the market, the money talked and we immediately saw that Team Hannon thought they needed a change of tactics to beat Kingman again.
Watching a horse come with a last gasp run and then seeing him set out to make the running next time must be galling for some of his supporters at least and when you consider that some people thought part of Kingman’s failure last time was due to being in front sooner than ideal, you have to question the logic.
John Gosden told channel 4 interviewers that it was "clever" of the Hannon team to try to win from the front on Night Of Thunder. I suspect he was actually thinking "Thanks very much boys, can we borrow this horse as a pacemaker next time?"
Where next for Kingman, will he beat Toronado, where the hell is my 9/1 ante-post money from the 2000G Johnny? are some immediate questions.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 17, 2014 at 16:26 #482709Held up in a slowly run mile Night Of Thunder would’ve had no chance at all of beating Kingman.

Sitting in front in a slowly run mile didn’t do much good either. Hughes said he slowed it down and tried to kick then couldn’t believe Kingman came by him. When he won last time it was by playing late. John Gosden praised their tactics with Night Of Thunder, stating that they know their horse stays well. That is not much cop if you are going slowly at the head of affairs.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 17, 2014 at 17:54 #482730They were interesting tactics I have to say. I expected Toormore to lead and NOT to be produced late but they are not in the same ownership so no team strategy. To be honest I am not sure if would have made any difference. The winner is clearly a class above.

June 17, 2014 at 20:49 #482771Strange tactics from team Hannon – but that Kingman is some animal and you’d imagine they could have tried every (fair) tactic known to man and they still wouldn’t have beat the Gosden beast.

Strange that James Doyle knew what he was sitting on but his Trainer still has his Ar*e firmly stuck on the fence.
All this nonsense about ground requirements for the horse was blown out the window again yesterday,he seems to win on everything and that was on the fast side of Good too,’Sole Power’ proved that.As for post race comments about how the horse doesn’t get to see himself on the telly…….Only Gosden could talk such tripe. No questionKingman
is a machine,an improving one at that but if he is ever to get the ‘Frankel’ treatment of super-stardom then he needs to change yards as John Gosden is to Positive bulletins what long grass is too Hayfever sufferers.

Wow. It is hard to do but you are managing to sound more ridiculous with every post Gord. May I suggest some psychiatric help?
In centuries to come doctors will be referring to "The Gosden Complex." "Mrs Smith-Albright-Spencer-Pearce I am sorry to say your son’s irrational dislike for his fine, upstanding teacher is a classic case of Gosden’s. It was first diagnosed way back at the beginning of the last Millennium would you believe?! I’m afraid there is no cure……………no we don’t BELIEVE it is sexual but the subjects of the hatred do often seem to be well spoken, eloquent and balding. We have yet to find any rational behind it and suggest you change your son to another school."

June 18, 2014 at 11:54 #482861It’s bad enough for a punter to be blinkered Gord, if blindfolded you’ve got no chance of winning.

It was never about whether Kingman would act on good-firm. It was the fact after
ankle surgery
, firm ground means a greater chance of reoccuring injury or even death.
Indeed, although the form performance was so good, he did hang close home, like he did at Sandown on similarly good-firm ground.
Value Is EverythingJune 18, 2014 at 15:01 #482883There is something irritating about the way Gosden communicates these days…joyless and boring soundbites that I think are meant to come across as clever but sound smug, condescending and smart arsed instead……..they leave me less than cold….how about looking and sounding like you enjoy winning rather than trying to sound like you knew what was going to happen all along?
