    Thoughts of June.

Vastly improved last time out when winning for the first time and extra distance here should not be a detriment. Stamina on top and speed on the bottom side of her breeding…

    Manobo.

Very lightly raced for a 4-yo with only four starts but has a great record. Hope he settles early and doesn’t pull as hard as he did in Dubai last time out.

However, it wouldn’t surprise at all for Pyledriver to lift the trophy as he did face much stiffer competition in Hong Kong and Dubai…

    Campanelle.

Would be nice to see her win three consecutive Royal Ascots: as a 2-yo, a 3-yo, and now a 4-yo. Has any horse accomplished such a feat?…

    Shahryar.

Handled a then quality field in Dubai, impressively…however, Yibir has had two losses since then and we’ll see what Pyledriver does at the Coronation Cup on Friday (3rd June)…

    Cachet,

A Classic winner (and close 2nd in France) deserves to be one of the favorites here and not at the odds she’s currently listed which are about 5x greater than the favorite (Homeless Songs).

Could turn out to be the race of the meet, if the main expected runners show up. Connections have confirmed that Pizza Bianca, last year’s BC Juv Fillies Turf winner, is making the trip…

He will forever be one of the greatest athletes in the world of horse racing. A true icon of the sport, in every sense of the word…

Deepest condolences to family and loved ones. RIP, Lester…

I read your post earlier today LD, and I was so happy about the news. But this is really sad turn of events. The world of horse racing lost one of its greatest athletes of all time!…

Deepest condolences to Lester’s family and loved ones. May you RIP, Lester…

“ie Are you saying it should be illegal for any parent not to make their son or daughter pay keep?”

How did you reach that conclusion about my points above, GT? Where did I explicitly or implicitly state that “tax avoidance” should be illegal? My whole premise is that tax avoidance exists, period. That’s true in any country or territory that has tax laws and tax codes. I gave two unambiguous examples of tax avoidance in recent times…

“There is no such thing as tax ‘avoidance’.”

    You sure about that, GT?

You may look at HMRC’s note in UK government’s website that not only defines the concept of “tax avoidance” but also states that it’s legal:

“Tax avoidance involves bending the rules of the tax system to try to gain a tax advantage that Parliament never intended…It involves operating within the letter, but not the spirit, of the law.”

    Hence, tax avoidance is legal…

    Here’s the link:
    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tax-avoidance-an-introduction

Moreover, we have countries/territories (a.k.a “tax havens”) whose seemingly main purpose of existence is to provide tax “avoidance” services to the world’s biggest corporations and wealthiest individuals. Places like British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Jersey, Panama, etc., etc. I think that (Sir) Richard Branson owns an island in the British Virgin Islands. Tax avoidance anyone?..Oh, and speaking of Panama, a few years ago the world’s most elite and affluent experienced shock waves registering 9.0 on the tax “avoidance/evasion” scale with the release of the “Panama Papers”. The rest of us were shocked as well since nothing came of it…

But the most perverse example of tax avoidance? Well, that honor belongs to the worlds most wealthiest and biggest corporation Apple and the government of Ireland which jointly took on the EU in court and won! This was big news in July, 2020.

Here’s one headline: “Apple Wins €13 Billion Tax Avoidance Case Against EU Antitrust Regulator”

Just imagine, if you will, Ireland is in the midst of COVID pandemic whose economy is shut down but it goes to court to fight alongside Apple telling the EU that they don’t want the tax money that is owed to them? And, following the verdict, the Irish government hailed the court’s decision as a victory for Ireland! I still can’t get my head around this one.

Furthermore, it was disclosed in the same year that the Apple paid an effective tax rate of just 2% in Ireland in the preceding decade. C’mon, 2% ??? What is the tax rate for the average tax payer in Ireland? I don’t have the facts, but I would wager that it’s greater than 2%.

No such thing as tax “avoidance”?…maybe not for the average tax payer because he/she can’t afford the high-priced lawyers and consultants to advise how to lessen the tax burden….

The colt I’ve mentioned above, Slipstream, who beat Twilight Gleaming (2021 BC Juv Sprint Winner) has been confirmed to be making the trip. He did run against Modern Games finishing 6th in last year’s BC Juv Turf.

Here’s a link to his race vs TG at Keenland, 5.5F, Listed Stakes, course rated as “good”.

“Ground permitting the Coronation at Ascot looks like it could be epic what with her, Cachet and the returning Inspiral.”

LD: throw in last year’s BC Juv Fillies Turf winner Pizza Bianca in the mix. Her connections confirmed yesterday that she will be making the trip. Could turn out to be a very interesting affair, indeed!

“I see McIlroy started to play well again when there was no pressure on.”

Seems to be the trend with him now days…

I recall a few years ago being at a golf function where “Monty” was a guest and got up on the stage for brief Q&A. Someone asked for his opinion about the state of then McIlroy’s game. Monty’s answer was that if McIlroy had a true “professional” caddie, he would win a lot more majors. I think he does have a point…

Speaking of caddies, why in the hell did Pereira’s caddie allow him to use a driver on the 18th, the 72nd hole being up by 1 shot???
    — it’s simple: 5-wood/driving iron, then middle-iron to the green, 2-putt and lift the trophy!!!

BigG seems like you stand to have a fantastic weekend, hope Simpson does it for you!

Rory was +5 on the par 3s, that’s horrendous. But he did bounce back with 3 birdies later on and, unfortunately, bogeyed the 18th. I think that he’s still in the mix and could be there or thereabouts at the finish…

The player that slipped under the radar with a fantastic round and no fanfare was Matt Fitzpatrick. Would not surprise me if takes it all if the leader comes back to the field. And don’t leave out Zalatoris just yet, this young man has got serious game…

I agree with your assessment Ian, however the winner was pointed for this race all along following his excellent run in the Wood Memorial. This lightly-raced Gun Runner colt is very speedy so not sure he has the necessary stamina to handle the 12F Belmont Stakes. He’s probably going to be prepared for the 10F Travers and then the BC Classic. He looks promising. I also think that Epicenter will miss the Belmont as well, no point pushing his limits now…
