Aranalde, we’re not sure yet – Mrs Tooting’s folks live outside Shifnal and we’ll rent near there before finding a place (smallholding) of our own. She has a new job in Birmingham so a lot will depend upon her commute.
I’m certainly finding it ironic that I should be leaving London ahead of lolly’s mate!
Dave, I’m thinking of getting a Piaggio Ape 50 – those old three wheeler scooters the French/Italian peasants are so fond of – I like the idea of holding up the traffic with a cap on my head and a dog in the back.
My wife and I have differing ideas as to what life will be like.
In her mind’s eye she sees her dad’s farmhouse, agas, orchards and streams, rolling fields, peace and quiet and a big sky.
I see duelling banjos.
As a 44 year old non-driver I find it’s perfectly possible to live my life without a car in London, indeed preferable.
And, although the transport is eye-poppingly expensive, it’s way cheaper than running a car.
And when I was a training consultant I had little trouble roaming around Britain either, much to the astonishment of other consultants who couldn’t imagine life without their cars. Of course, these journeys were effectively free.
However, as my wife is about to drag me up to the wilds of Shropshire to live in rural seclusion (aka hell) I have to say lack of transport is beginning to weigh heavily on my mind!

Aranalde,
I actually linked to your blog last night out of idle curiosity and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was going to pm to say so but this thread renders that redundant.
How about a follow-up article on Walsall throwing away the Division 1 championship, (and in the process killing off the accumulator that’s been keeping me warm all winter)!
Top call on Party Boss toad, don’t go frittering it away now!!
I don’t like either of these two races much I’m afraid (maybe because I looked at them after the other 15 races I’ve priced up this morning!).
Orchard Supreme was my favourite for the 2:05, but I can’t be interested at the price. He also has Hughes on board and I’ve vowed never again to put on proper sums when he rides a hold-up horse.
As for the sprint, I think Toad has this spot on – the two front-runners may well go off too fast but who exactly is going to catch them, especially with the ones I like drawn wide. Of the two I prefer Maltese Falcon and if he drifts much beyond 3s I’ll probably play, otherwise I’ll watch.
I was only left with Red Cape when I looked at this briefly. Just a question of price. I’ll wait.
I’ll go Cusoon – think the two should be closer in the betting than they are, if not quite as close as toad’s tissue.
Cusoon 4pts win at 5/2
Southwell’s apparent match is quite an interesting one.
The last time Waterside and Wessex ran against each other a few people on this thread (me included) sided with Wessex only for him to run like pooh.
He has a noteworthy turnaround in the weights here if anyone is inclined to forgive that run. I think I’ll throw a couple of points his way, in case my original thinking had some credibility.
To madman: one man and his laptop are up against it when it comes to in-running betting. You are up against at the very least:
People with access to pictures ahead of you,
and
People using software to put their bets on quicker than you and your fingers.
Some people seem to do Ok regardless, but they usually have pre-determined plans built around the running styles of various horses/jockeys.
Saturday meetings televised on terrestrial TV can provide a leveller playing field. Playing at any other time, without a really solid strategy, I’d suggest you’re likely to get eaten alive by sharks. Good luck!
Someone on the betfair forums was coming up with possible titles for Alistair’s autobiography.
I particuarly liked
"The Lost Weekender"
but in the end would go with
"Down Your Neck".

Looks a tricky race Toad.
Areyoutalkingtome – trip doubt (though he’s stuffed that back in our faces all winter).
Qadar – trip doubt though he should get the pace he needs. (By the way, personally I wasn’t overly taken with the ride the other day when the money was on the other one).
Maltese Falcon – not sure about the draw not suiting, and he can make all here, but there looks to be contenders for the lead.
Moorhouse Lad – also possible front runner and new surface to contend with.
Tricky tissue accordingly.
Areyoutalkingtome 5/2
Qadar 5/1
Maltese Falcon 5/1
Moorhouse Lad 14/1
The favourite is drifting right now. I’d chance him or indeed either of the next two if they drifted too much.
Otherwise no bet.
I couldn’t get my head round the 4:00 at all, so abandoned it.
It’s a shame we haven’t got those stats for Nigel Shields’ runners when he’s got more than one runner in a race.
Without them I’ll watch with interest, but won’t play.

Great exacta NV!
Strange race this one.
Blythe Knight 6/4
Kindlelight Debut 3/1
Hail The Chief 4/1
Curtail 9/1
My tissue obviously reflects that, despite being well in here, I think Blythe Knight thrives in big fields/big pace (as others have already pointed out). However, the remaining three all have enough drawbacks for me to ignore my prices.
I can see Hail the Chief bossing this one, despite the break, but with NV’s notes, and Corals going longest I’ll definitely sit this one out for now.
Does anyone have stats to hand as to how Nigel Shield’s second strings perform?? Might be something to salvage from the day!
Wessex sweeping the forum off its feet!
Southwell 3:40
California Laws 9/4
Wessex 11/2
Waterside 11/2
Prince Tum Tum 7/1
Byron bay 10/1
Jimmy the Guesser 14/1
Pawan 25/1
California Laws wouldn’t have to be that good to beat these, but it’s still a step up. The price that stands out is Wessex, presumably because Callan has chosen Waterside. Given his record for placing at Southwell and the shape of the race, an ew bet seems in order. I missed the 8s but 15/2 will do.
Wessex 3pts ew at 15/2
