clive, i’m saying it like i see it – handbags at dawn, toys all out of the pram, personal bickering and financial thoughts – all a bit sad and not what i thought it was all about but it just shows how wrong i am. i can understand the arguments about whether the best horse in a race was the one that won it or not but this is different imo, bearing in mind it is about the future of this site – where the hell will everone post their stupid arguments when there is nowhere to post them ?
for all your benefit, signing off
i thought when i saw alan1’s thread that a perfect response had been given, ie, someone who does this anyway and could continue trf without any baggage but i did not know there were others who could also do so.
the ideal answer is obviously someone interested who can tack this onto what they do with no cost implications, though i for one would not mind a small payment for costs incurred in doing so.
it appears though that there are a number of people who can do this and that there is also a financial value involved – not a shocking discovery but something that puts a different perspective on things.
considering the amount of so-called hatchets to be buried along with financial considerations also, i now wonder what the answer is.
whatever, it has been a good forum, i will be sad to see it go and if it goes the wrong way, market forces will work against it – ie, i and presumably others won’t bother anymore.
it would be nice to think an impartial party can pick this up and run with it as it is but where money is involved, my faith in human nature evaporates. this is in no way disrepectful of where it sits at the moment as personally speaking, looking at what is going on, i’d be glad to get shot of and if there is a price, thank you.
i think but doubt that all will, members would have to agree on a acceptable solution. it’s a shame but all good things do come to an end.
i hope nothing i have typed here offends anyone and if it does i unacceptably claim alcohol as the excuse.
i’d be happy for either a one-off or regular payment if it keeps things going. we’re all probably interested in racing and gamblers anyway so what’s a few quid every now and then ? just take it from your winnings ;)
I think Rich has hit it on the head, it is a big job and a testament to what it has been so far. From my experience in IT split duties are very difficult to manage successfully. It will need a single dedicated owner and people who can be there more or less 24/7. I don’t know if partial or shared modding would work, but it may do with some degradation. I wish I had the time but it’s not just the time, it’s who does it when you’re not there. This is a big ask and requires somebody, imo, who has every day spare. I do hope it continues but if not, it has been good. Fingers crossed. Thinking outside the box, would members be prepared to pay someone (definitely not me or anyone I know, sort it out yourselves) to host and moderate according to whatever SLAs are set down ? There are probably other options that I am too drunk to consider.
fallon is on a retainer for his services, he is a millionaire and he can ride anywhere outside of this country as well as work ride in this country – compare this with joe public accused of such a crime. no other job allows this.
of course he did – if i had the choice of the same money for half the work i’d choose the part-time comp as well
coolest part of britain ? – it aint the trains i get and call me wrong but roll on winter and proper six foot snow drifts. cold is good. greenhouse commuter trains packed to the rafters with mrs 30-stoner thinking she can fit in the seat next to you is not good.
forget about 10 pound fines for those without tickets, make those that take two seats up pay double.
bring on the next ice age
excuse me but if found guilty nothing more than lifetime exclsuion would be appropriate.
regardless of anybody’s greatness or achievements such a crime (yes its is a crime, not just in itself as fraud but greater than that because of the people it’s done against, ie, those that pay the wages, employ, etc.) should be dealt with by total exclusion.
if i could be bothered i’d drag up my previous (maybe slightly biased) rants about no smoke without fire and how many times do you need to see smoke before realising something is alight.
but i won’t, one just hopes justice will be done correctly whatever the result.

oh, and aranalde, what i meant to say about the 9/10 people and football is exactly what you said – 9/10 people in this country probably have about the same level of knowledge and interest in football, ie, not a lot.
can’t see many flags today ?
fair enough all round. but for our ineptitude in shoot-outs we’d be up against france, and cup matches can be won by playing badly, as people put it, as we proved. then it’d be the 50/50 chance in a final and as the results have shown in this cup again, anything is possible.
i know everyone would like to see the home team win by playing super-stylish stuff but failing that, any old dodgy win would be a fair second best as like it or not, after time we’d all almost forget the way it was done but still remember the result. not that we have to worry about this for at least another 4 years.
the only thing i can say with hand on heart from this world cup is that my friend has got me back from the derby as i was told from before christmas that laying england was the safest bet this lifetime. i didn’t do it but those that did will enjoy the semi’s and final i think.
fancy picking 4 strikers and not 1 capable of taking a penalty !
i agree with the commentators and pundits are getting carried away but isn’t everybody else, you inlcuded ?
to say how we have performed so far is a mix between farcical and mind-numbing is a bit ott, imo. to say most people don’t know anything about football is a strange statement too as i’d imagine 9/10 have about the same level of knowledge/interest.
the problem with critics in this country is the need to negatively criticise. instead of being patriotic we’re criticising the manager, the team, the tactics, etc – rio is right to say the result is the be all and end all. like the moaners after the derby proclaiming sir percy wasn’t the best horse in the race, he won and his name is in the record books and he”l get the stud rights. england won the world cup in 66 but did that ball cross the line and would the result had been the same if it wasn’t given ? – don’t matter as they all have their medals and obe’s, etc.
i have had a sneaking suspicion england will win this world cup and i dont think they’ll do it by playing the most attractive football either. i can see a crouch and sven robotic duet after we’ve won and i can also see pundits either having to eat their words or more probably still knock the team, even if they do win.
it’s all rather silly really, we should all be behind our team, let them get on with their job however they see fit (i wouldn’t like it if they tried to tell me how to do mine) and hope.
if the world cup was for knocking yourself, we’d be invincible
there are many potential worries in the world and that’s all this is for the general population, just a possible worry. If it becomes widespread and incurable and becomes as dangerous as the flu epidemics last century I might think again but at the moment, there’s plenty else to put on my radar screen and this don’t come close.
This in no way implies it isn’t devastating for those few it has affected so far though, I just wish the media wouldn’t create scare stories where they are not needed, imo. more chance of being hit by a car or attacked on the streets
best to start slow and build up the performances is the best defence i can make for their showing so far. anyway, i’m off to tidy myself up and get out with the rest of the adult population and get smashed while yelling stupidly at a little box. every cloud has a silver lining – if we lose, pubs get back to normal.
i’ve been otherwise occupied all week but will today be having a punt on Mobaasher in the 3.25 at redcar and Queen’s Pudding in the 8.05 at newmarket and combining them both in a win double for an extra half point. good luck whoever does whatever.
yep, racing is going to the dogs just like football – chelsea were freakishly lucky again this year benefitting from the appalling stewards decisions Arsenal got through the season and their early-mid season battle with the the two northern contenders who didn’t run the title race at a pace suited to Arsenal. These bad decisions and the poor stable form of the 2 northern teams meant that for the second year running a lucky team could usurp the country’s top 3 teams purely with some luck and a few hundred million dodgy quid.
Sir Percy – after winning his first 2 races he wins the Vintage Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes to finish as an unbeaten 2yo before coming second in the guineas and winning a big-field Derby with with some supposedly super-horses in it. He won the Derby regardless of how it was run and while people may say he would not have won it if the race had been run differently, this can only be speculative, subjective opinions on a hypothetical scenario that will never happen – because it won’t be run again. But no-one can say he wouldn’t win it again if it was run again, not that it will be, not that it matters because, Sir Percy won the Derby, what a great horse. End of. (mind you the other races that day were run slowly too – must’ve all been lucky that day)
I don’t know where to look for race reports for Aussie races though the following is about a race I read about in the Metro newspaper last year which beats the goose story by a few horses, riders and a flock
Updated: 2:02 p.m. ET April 1, 2005
Five jockeys tumbled from their mounts and a race was declared void after a flock of seagulls flew into a dozen horses at the Sandown race way in the southern city of Melbourne on Thursday. In fading light for the last race of the day, the gallopers were on the home straight approaching the finish when the seagulls flew into the horses, forcing many to shy away and toss their riders.
Five jockeys were injured, including apprentice Brady Cross, who broke his left arm.
