Only The Grand National can old it’s own against other sports on a Saturday and even that race doesn’t seem so popular with the general public judging by viewing figures.
Even though The Cheltenham Gold Cup is bigger than The Derby these days, it would still struggle on a Saturday. Why did Wetherby move the fences to the inside after the A1 was widened? Already making room for flat racing perhaps?
As for Haydock,it’s now just a gaff track that stages graded races,if the BHA had any power,it should have taken The Betfair Chase off them.
Cheltenham’s fences are very soft now, especially the last fence where horses can walk through.
Toughest jumping test these days is Newbury, the third last is as big as any park fence.Too much racing, this 2 day Ascot meeting didn’t even exist a few years ago.
Viewing figures yesterday down 800,000 on 2 years ago and 1,3million shorts of CH4s last National
The 2 that need looking at is the Ascot Chase as it’s too close to Cheltenham and The Betfair Chase needs to be moved from gaff track Haydock.
Next week of course it’s Aintree but up to the early 90s it was known as Liverpool.
Why the name change there🤔We used to have The Easter,Masaka Stakes and Queens Prize on a proper course at Kempton and The Welsh Champion Hurdle at Chepstow on Monday to look forward to.
That’s before the wooden tops that run racing thought betting fodder was the way to go.So we need to stop calling it National Hunt because some snowflakes will be offended?? Ridiculous
Nothing they could do as they are taking SSR pictures.
It’s as if ITV racing has had their budget cut.Haydock is the last place to stage Cheltenham trials, described as a greyhound track by Tom Scudamore it shouldn’t even have the Betfair Chase in my book with its trolly fences
March 19, 2021 at 11:54 in reply to: Winning from the front has never been easier at Cheltenham #1530974Another reason could be the softening up of the fences, especially the ones in the straight to lessen the amount of fallers in front the packed stands.
If the fences were as stiff and big(open ditches) as they used to be,I’m not sure there would be as many front runners going flat out being thrown at the fences.
Would love to know what the height of the 2nd last on the old course and the 4th last on the new course as they look very small now.Leonna Major really seemed not to know who was running in The Gold Cup when asked this morning.
Faltering delivery because she hasn’t a clue what’s she’s on about.
They could save money by putting a dummy with a silly hat on in the corner.Yes we have had massive amounts of rainfall but Cheltenham used to cope with rain better than this, either it’s more watering in the autumn or changes to the drainage to stop it drying out at the festival
Alastair took redundancy from The Post a few years ago along many experienced journalists, all that’s left is mostly kids.
He does the odd freelance piece and may do one on festival trials day perhapsSeriously low budget coverage from ITV. Richard Hoiles wasn’t there and Mick Fitzgerald appeared to clear off home after the 3.00
I’m sure Aintree would love to change the off time of The Many Clouds Chase to earlier but can’t due to ITV just as the station forces Becher day to be on the same day as the Tingle Creek and big races to be run late in the day on chopped up ground.
