Withdrawing that sort of money after betting in dollars is an incredible return so well done!
I think it’s a very interesting point you’ve raised.
I’ve got a ‘bank’ that I use for betting and never ever use money that I would otherwise put aside for household expenses to bet.
I’ve made withdrawals on a regular basis, but the amounts are nothing spectacular. My next target is a bit away yet, so hopefully some time in the near future I’ll get there and withdraw again.
Agree with post above.
If Denman went to Newbury without a run and had to concede a lot of weight to Exotic Dancer, Halcon…, Alberta’s Run perhaps, then I believe he’d start odds against.
Himself’s comments about Kauto’s jumping is absolutely spot-on.
Judging by the post-race comments one could be forgiven for thinking that Kauto Star clambered over fences. This is not true.
He merely ‘fiddled’ a couple, nothing more than that.
I’ve got the Raceform Form Book in front of me and the rating for Master Minded for Newbury was 169+.
"He must now be the one to beat at the Festival" is the Notebook comment.
Hmmm, interesting!
I don’t want to hijack the thread, but I have another query related to time. (Did Luca Cumani really say ‘only worry about time when you’re in jail?)
Anyway, my query… when speed figures are calcuated in jump racing, I’m assuming that speed figures do not take into account the number of fences missed out?
Obviously it’s easier to run faster without the obstacles, but do those who compile speed figures change their median times according to fences omitted?
Many Thanks.
In racing it seems that there are two groups of people who will invite so much vitriol and ignorance.
Group 1 – Anybody claiming to make money from betting on horses.
Group 2 – Anybody not sounding like Julian Wilson.
Dave Nevison appears to fit into both groups.
That, apparently, is his crime.
Whenever I’ve heard him on the radio I’ve liked him.
However, surely he won’t be allowed to be as honest as he has been on radio?
A few weeks ago he was talking about Sam Thomas. The presenter made very generous comments about Thomas’ riding ability. Andreas politely challenged the view and argued that in his opinion Thomas was not as good as others believe.
Now obviously this is a fair enough point of view, probably sincerely held. Whether I agree with it or not is irrelevant. However, given the often incestuous relationship between those in the racing media and owners/trainers/jockeys, this type of attitude is not going to do him any good is it?
Anyway, good luck to him.
I really enjoyed reading the post above.
Taking the time and trouble to make such a detailed comment is exceptionally welcome.
Everything seems so rushed.
Analysis of form is restricted to:
"good winner last time, a rise in the weights could stop him"
"out of form, but you can’t write-off AP"I’m grateful it’s on terrestrial television, but the whole ‘product’ is just very very poor. I rarely watch the programme other than for the actual races. The terrible thing is, I don’t believe for one minute that those involved in the programme are happy. I believe they are genuine racing fans. I’m sure they’d like more time to discuss horses, races, issues etc.. but for whatever reason they don’t.
I know there’s a tendency to wax lyrical about the ‘old-days’ but when Brough Scott hosted the programme for an afternoon’s racing it seemed so relaxed. Everybody appeared calm and comfortable.
It’s not like that now is it?
I did have the Raceform Interactive product but I didn’t enjoy reading the form book on a computer screen so I’ve now subscribed to Raceform’s Form Book – Flat and Jumps.
Costs just over £50 each month and covers all GB and Ireland racing.
However, I take Swallow’s point about the layout of Raceform, I think it could be improved.
Sorry folks, I’ve made a right mess of this.
Didn’t think the proposed competition had generated much interest, so I’ve promised it to someone.
I’ll do better next time.
Horses only!
Well David, upto now you’re in line for an easy walk-over.
I’ll leave it open for a bit longer… but not much.
Just got back myself.
The wind! Good grief it was cold there. How some of those hen parties managed to survive in high heels, strappy tops and short skirts I’ll never know.
Anyway, I enjoyed it – despite Ms Davidson beating me in two races today.
Great to have a free bus from Newcastle to the course and the staff at the course were very friendly – as was one bookie. I dropped my racecard and he came after me to give me it back. Very kind of him.
Also, seeing some of the jocks sign autographs before going into the parade ring was a very nice touch.
Thanks for all the tips folks.
Just a quick edit. The carvery is only £50, it’s the actual ‘Grande Buffet" that is being offered at £100+…..plus VAT!
I may dine elsewhere.
Tomorrow I’m travelling to Newcastle for my first meeting in over 20 years. In fact, my last visit to a racecourse was to witness See You Then win his third Champion Hurdle.
I’m not expecting a ‘Cheltenham’ experience (obviously) but I’m now starting to get nervous about going.
So a few questions for you all:
I assume there’s no problem with me using my PDA to bet with Betfair on-course?
Is the food likely to be edible, or am I just a fantasist? (I’m in the Premier Enclosure but don’t fancy the carvery at £99, though I’m sure it’s Michelin quality!)
Will I be thoroughly underwhelmed by it all ? (my biggest fear)
Last time I went racing I had binoculars, I don’t now. Is it worth purchaing a cheap pair before tomorrow?
Many Thanks.
