I realise I may be opening a can of worms here but can anyone shed light on how Dave Edwards arrives at his going correction?
The reason I ask is that when looking at the times of winners and the seconds per furlong outside/inside the RP standard, I then find it difficult to work out how Edwards gets to his going correction figure for the meeting?
Thanks in anticipation.

I don’t want to hijack your thread but I’m sure I remember (when I used to be on here much more) that you’re a regular Betfair watcher and hold a fair number of Betfair stats regarding Industry SP and Betfair figures.
While looking over some of my results from the last 6 months I started noticing a decrease in the margin between Betfair SP and Industry SP. It seemed to be the case a year or two ago that horses returning at 10/1 (winning horses) would yield a significantly better return at BSP, and those returning at 20/1 or more rewarding Betfair punters with 25,30,40,50% increases in their returns at BSP.
But now, there ‘appears’ to be a much closer match between Industry SP and BSP. Is there anything in this, or am I just looking at a very small set of figures?
Hope I’ve got the right bloody person!
In the last couple of years I’ve noted an increase in his criticism, not just of himself but of some of the winners he rides as well.
It’s not unusual to hear him say ‘well, the race wasn’t very good, I don’t know what the horse has beaten, the horse is alright I suppose.’
Perhaps that is due to him to riding modest horses on a regular basis and slightly envious of other riders. In his autobiography he does make reference to his ‘style’ and is obviously aware that some people think that it’s ‘just’ hard-work which makes him successful.
I just wonder if he’s more than a tiny bit unhappy that people only ever refer to his rides as being those of a jockey who doesn’t give up. How often do you hear people say the following of McCoy?:
‘oh, he weaved his way through horses there and found the gaps at the right time.’
‘he settled that horse really well, and helped him relax.’
‘he’s given that horse a lovely ride, looking after him, and managing to kid him home.’
Rarely, if ever.
You only ever hear:
‘that’s one for the McCoy scrapbook.’
‘he just doesn’t give up does he?’
‘McCoy carries it over the line.’
‘Look, he’s hard at work a mile from home but he just keeps going.’
I think it hurts him, to be honest.
Dear Racing Post
Can you remind us again why you are paying Nicky Henderson to ‘write’ a column in your newspaper every Saturday?
Given that Binocular has had a problem for the last 2 weeks do you think it’s reasonable to assume that this information should perhaps have been passed on to the public?
Like others have suggested, I don’t suspect foul play, just plain stupidity.
Hmmmmmm
I’ve been thinking about this for sometime. I’ve been a subscriber to Raceform Interactive for a couple of years now but I’m just not convinced about the ‘value’ of it.
Given the amount you pay a month you would imagine that the database would be user-friendly, reliable and ‘exciting.’ Unfortunately it’s not any of those things.
I might try CHill’s tip and have a look at that site.
I keep trying to find alternatives…and I can’t.
Agree with CR though, I still wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the trainer changing his mind.
Curiouser and curiouser this.
‘I didn’t know it was banned, but somebody else (in the yard) obviously did.’
In all honesty, this stinks.
I’m no fan of Webb, he had a terrible game in the WC Final and he wasn’t great at Old Trafford.
However I was more annoyed that Agger made the challenge when he didn’t need to and Gerrard was stupid going into the challenge like that. I’ve no real moans about it all.
Anyway, Kenny’s back, the fans are united, press conferences won’t contain the embarrassing statements like they did with the previous manager and we’ll just have to get on with it for the rest of the season.
I’d walk a million miles…
A good move.
The barbarians are hardly at the gate are they?
It’s clear that you’re suffering from sort of debilitating condition at the moment Mr Wilson. Nothing trivial I hope.
If you’re unable to understand the argument I’m putting forward then that’s my mistake in assuming your IQ is greater than the number of summers you’ve graced our planet.
Tell me about the top-class Europeans (not UK or Ireland) he competes against regularly ?
How does he get on against the best from Africa ?
Is he still the best when up against jocks from Asia ?
Is he still the man when riding against his American colleagues ?
Surely those other sportsmen and women who participate in sports with greater competition are more deserving of the award?
Well I’ve read the petition and I can’t support it.
It seems to me that proposals for greater contributions from bookmakers, both traditional and exchange based, will result in a poorer deal for punters.
So for that reason…I’m out.
No problem with the camera operator John. My concern is with the racecourse officials. Would it have been too difficult to put some screens around the horse?
Just watched replays of the day’s racing at Navan.
Have to say I was very disappointed to see the twitching body of Fionnegas lying prone on the ground as the rest of the field bypassed that fence.
Were they hoping the horse was just winded and giving it a chance to get up? Or was it just sheer incompetence in allowing everyone to witness that ?
I’ve only just stopped laughing at the ludicrous letter written by Ferdy Murphy (yes, he of the multiple convictions for bringing racing into disrepute)in last Sunday’s Racing Post.
I’ve only recently subscribed to ATR and RUK online. As a result I’ve watched hardly any coverage by C4.
Last night I was struck by one thing. On ATR there was, inevitably, tremendous scrutiny of the ride with ‘Big Mac’ and Chapman leading the case for imprisoning the jockey. There was some defence from American contributors – sort of.
However, I just started to imagine what it would have been like if C4 had covered the event.
‘Big Mac’ would have been just as critical, but you can imagine the response from his colleagues:
McGrath (eyes closed in an attempt to convey greater intelligence) John, you just can’t say things like that. The jockey’s not deliberately got beaten. The fractions are so small, it was close at the line, you’ve no evidence whatsoever to be making outlandish statements like that – totally unfair.
Francome Listen, Mac, tell me, how many winners have you ridden on the dirt? No, really Mac, how many winners have you ridden? I’ve looked through all the form books and I can’t see your name next to anything. You don’t know what it’s like to ride horses in an event like this, with all the pressure and all the focus. It just goes to show how difficult these things are.
Mr Down would then have interviewed the connections of the runner-up and probably would have conducted his usual obsequious exchange, something along the lines of
‘She’s still our champion, nobody’s fault, these things happen, that’s racing. Don’t listen to the less civilised members of our team complaining.’
ATR has loads of faults, but good grief it’s fences ahead of the C4 production.
Last season I thought that Hen Knight had a surprising approach to her campaigning of Somersby. I’m sure that prior to Cheltenham she said something along the lines of ‘I won’t run him unless we can get AP on board.’
Big ride for Frost tomorrow.
