Imho, the whole bloody thing’s a farce, and it’s punters that have been done up the wrong ‘un.
NJH says the horse will miss the race, citing a muscle problem. AP then says that the horse missed no work at all. So did Binocular have a problem and got worked anyway, or was someone lying ?
Another dreadful renewal, but then we could see that a mile off.
If they’re both right, then it’s Kauto hands down.
Thanks Gerald.
Excuse a halfwit here, but do any chase winners after the publication of the weights incur a penalty, or are these the weights for the big day ?
If you say so.
And I suppose Fangio’s Ferrari of the 1960s would dominate the current crop of cars and drivers as well, simply because he’s a part of history.
Yes indeed.
It’s obvious that I’m claiming that the all-too-apparent advances in engineering and technology as evident in F1 (and most other areas you care to name) have been exactly mirrored in the development, nutrition and training methods of the 21st Century thouroughbred, which in the 2m hurdling division at least, will outstay, outspeed and outjump any previous Champion Hurdle winner.
Stands to reason

Doesn’t exactly take an exceptional 5yo to win it, does it?
I suppose not, when you think that the last three 5yos to go in (before Katchit) were See You Then, Night Nurse and Persian War.
They wouldn’t even get placed this year, would they ?

An utterly ridiculous trend. ‘5 year olds can’t
win
the Champion Hurdle’. Putting aside the very poor Katchit, 10 5yos have run in the race in the past 3 seasons. They’ve finished 3rd, 6th, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and the rest were also-rans. .
So, how many winners there ?
I’m a Denman fan. And I personally am delighted with the booking.
And now ?
I don’t believe Denman has a hope in hell of beating a fully-fit Kauto and never have, but if I owned him I’d be wondering what Timmy Murphy was doing on Gold Cup day.
It’s not ‘tall poppy syndrome’ and it’s not hatred towards AP……it’s just that he seems much more of a backable proposition in a three grand claimer than he is in a big money Saturday TV or Graded race. Maybe someone has some level stakes stats to bear this out ? He’s a 7lb negative for me in good races, and has been for a couple of years.
The first twelve home last year have, (over hurdles) posted just two wins from a total of 32 runs. Chasing, or big weights in handicaps lie in store for them.
Non-stayers, mares, 5y-os, the previous Supreme winner and novices will win it once in a blue moon. And as Medermit’s trainer already seems to be schooling him over fences I’d suggest even he’d be surprised if he won.
That leaves us with Khyber Kim and Solwhit, who seems reliant on a bit of cut.
It’s often said that KK is best fresh…….let’s hope he doesn’t leave the CH at Newbury.
I was expecting pretty much what I got. This current bunch of two mile hurdlers are awful.
Brother !

I was recently chastised for suggesting that Alderbrook (not even a particular favourite of mine) would win the 2010 CH with some ease against this lot. I reiterate that opinion.
Ireland.
24th January.
I’m thinking they’ll be going in up to their bellies, so have had a little on Mr Thriller

And No Refuge.
I thought he’d said that nobody ever set out to breed a champion staying hurdler, that the title was essentially a consolation prize for horses that didn’t take to chasing and weren’t quick enough to win hurdles over 2m ?
Even as he said it, I could imagine an exasperated Ruby on the phone to The Stewarts……."Take no notice of my old man.."

And Inglis Drever.
Nick Luck’s professional face certainly slipped as Mac made his ‘Lord Snooty’ jibe
…..most of the time the loathing of Mac is barely concealed, and can be quite uncomfortable viewing.Tanya seems particularly ill at ease with him, both in the studio and in the betting ring.
Ted Walsh copped a lot of derision for his stayers’ hurdle remarks, but for me he was bang on the money.
