Whatever anyone thinks of Mac, genuine points about jockeyship in christmas hurdle and the standard of champion hurdlers as a group were met by sneering, chortling, giggling and arrogance…
Im sometimes suprised he takes it…
The questions Mac asked are those that would be asked by many a punter arent they?
Not impressed….
Is there any other sport where unanswered points about performance would be met with "well why dont you play in goal then?" or "why dont you tee off at Augusta?"
January 2, 2010 at 15:47 #267109I’m not especially impressed by the coverage at all today.
They clearly can’t be bothered with an A/W card & I’m surprised they didn’t cobble together a ‘Review Of 2009’ given that it always looked likely Sandown would be off.Still, at least Alice Plunkett can muster a bit of enthusiasm if for no other reason than to keep warm!
January 2, 2010 at 16:01 #267114Annoyed that I missed the ‘previously unseen footage’ of Flyingbolt that they mentioned at the end of the programme.
January 2, 2010 at 16:16 #267119I enjoyed the chat; John Francome and Ted Walsh are always worth listening too. It was also great to see the footage of Arkle, romping home with 12 st 10 lbs around Sandown In record time), and Flyingbolt winning the Irish National with the same wt, a month after trotting home in the 2-mile champion chase and finishing third (the very next day) in the Champion Hurdle.
I love Kauto Star, but he still has some way to go to match their achievmnetsJanuary 2, 2010 at 16:46 #267134Annoyed that I missed the ‘previously unseen footage’ of Flyingbolt that they mentioned at the end of the programme.
You can watch it later online – channel 4 catch-up. Probably from tomorrow onwards.

January 2, 2010 at 16:51 #267136Thanks; think they did it to punish me for not wanting to watch the AW!

They might describe it as friendly, joking banter but when it becomes a regular occurrence then it’s more akin to a subtle, perhaps unconscious, form of bullying intended to undermine the recipient who they probably know to be possibly more emotionally vulnerable than themselves. Not pleasant viewing and has been allowed to continue for far too long and too many years.January 2, 2010 at 16:58 #267139Didn’t see it but it doesn’t surprise me one bit, OP.
The way they childishly dismiss Mac when he has a decent argument is one of the reasons I don’t bother watching it. I like them individually but hate it when they become one for the sake of a bit of Mac bashing.
Not sure if it’s unconscious bullying as Ken says, or a more concious ‘it’s just the done thing for the show’ type carry on, but it’s not pleasent to see.

I not sure you can H. Whenever I’ve looked C4 has never had the racing on there. The Beeb do, but only for seven days….
Surprisingly, CX has made a good point and I agree with him….
January 2, 2010 at 18:27 #267168Nick Luck’s professional face certainly slipped as Mac made his ‘Lord Snooty’ jibe
…..most of the time the loathing of Mac is barely concealed, and can be quite uncomfortable viewing.Tanya seems particularly ill at ease with him, both in the studio and in the betting ring.
Ted Walsh copped a lot of derision for his stayers’ hurdle remarks, but for me he was bang on the money.
January 2, 2010 at 18:28 #267169I think with Mac, it’s friendly banter when Tanya Stephenson does it (and also Francombe or Thommo) but Jim McGrath gives him an pointlessly hard time.
It’s a nice little double act that Stephenson & Mac have. Yesterday had me chuckling when TS suggested having an e/w punt in a seven runner race.
Edit: Just read the post from just before mine, maybe I’ve got it totally wrong!

Big Mac is the classic bully mentality, happy enough when steaming in to others, but coming over all weak and helpless once it’s dished out to him in return. He’s big enough to stand up for himself on those rare occasions when he has half a leg to stand on, and sympathy for him is about as needful as for a whale shark with temporary toothache.

Fish Factpoint: Whale sharks’ teeth are really tiny bony filters, they don’t use them for chewing. A toothache wouldn’t interfere with their feeding.

Well I do feel sorry for him now! Are you saying that after having been bullied he then had half a leg chewed off by a shark? The poor guy, what a bad day he’s had.January 2, 2010 at 19:40 #267215what did Ted Walsh say about 3-mile hurdlers?
January 2, 2010 at 19:52 #267221He was saying that 3 mile hurdlers are inherently inferior specimens to 2 mile hurdlers, but that 3 mile chasers are superior to 2 mile chasers.
Much as I love listening to Ted Walsh, this is clearly nonsense.
January 2, 2010 at 20:07 #267227Ted Walsh is absolutely right; the 3mile chases and 2 mile hurdlers are more prestigious (and the prizes are better, to really prove it)
If Big Bucks was as good over 2 as 3 he would be going for the Champion Hurdle
If Moscow Flyer had stayed 3 miles he would have gone for the Gold Cup ( though I often wondered why thgey never tried him, he stayed 2 +1/2 so well) - AuthorPosts
