Sixteen Grade 1s over seven seasons, left or right handed, galloping or sharp tracks, from 2m to 3m 2 1/2, the only horse to regain the Gold Cup.
Oh, and five King George wins.

We’ve been so lucky to have him, jump racing just won’t seem the same.

    Happy retirement Kauto Star.

Michael Tanner’s " The Champion Hurdle – from Blaris to Istabraq " is a constant bedside companion, as is Barnes/Alper’s " The Persian War Story " though the style is rather dated now. Same applies to Jonathan Powell’s "Monksfield".

The Patrick Veitch tome is worth a read, as is Barney Curley’s "Giving A Little Back " . A special mention goes to David Ashforth’s " Hitting The Turf " if only for his account of Knockroe

    et al

Horses sadly lose their lives at Cheltenham, Meydan, Punchestown,Newmarket, Ascot and Epsom and on the gallops……let’s just outlaw all racing, shall we ?

A ready made Aintree fairytale !

‘Katie Walsh yesterday became the first ever lady rider to win the Grand National on 10/1 shot Seabass, trained by her father Ted, on his 67th (?) birthday.

Uniquely, Ted saddled Papillon to win for Katie’s brother Ruby in 2000, who had rejected Seabass……’

    And so on…..

I used to tape it as it clashes with Peppa Pig which my 2 year olds cannot miss under any circumstances.

The reason for your high juvenile strike rate is out, Mr. Hannon.

Can I echo Blunkett’s post and ask if anyone knows the plan for Dodging Bullets ?

Aintree has been mooted both in the press and apparently at various Previews.

    Thanks J17star.
I thought he had plenty of likely improvement in him, perhaps PFN doesn’t fancy Cheltenham for only his second run.

You could ague that, if it wasn’t for the National, 99% of the British public would not have a ‘racing experience’ ever. It’s the only day in the year that I can mention racing to my work colleagues and they show any interest.

    By Jove, that’s it…..a whip-free National !!

Jockeys may only use the whip for steering or a slap down the shoulder. No strikes after the last. Joe Public’s happy, BHA praised to high heaven, animal rights brigade appeased.

    Then back to normal.

    What about the dead horses?

    Are there

    always

    dead horses ?

Agreed he looked extremely impressive, but what’s he doing with his head ? Does he lack concentration ?
Does he run straight ? Will the hurly-burly of a big field Festival race suit him ?

He just seems too obvious a pick.

    Anyone else go ?

    Wasn’t it great ?

After a two and a quarter hour drive, I was within three miles of the track…….but those last three miles took two hours.

I missed the first two races and only made it for the third thanks to my gorgeous girlfriend (she is dictating this  ) who offered to park the car, enabling me to leg it to the course to place my win bet on Sire De Grugy :|

I’d guess that the queues at the food and coffee stands were 40 minutes or more, which would have meant missing another race, maybe two.

    So we left.

300-odd miles and a day off work, 7 hours driving.
Not a copper in sight to ease traffic in……I won’t be hurrying back.

    patronize, patronise [ˈpætrəˌnaɪz]
    vb
    1.

to behave or treat in a condescending way

    2. (tr) to act as a patron or patroness by sponsoring or bringing trade to
    patronizer , patroniser n

    Your dictionary is deficient, sir.
    "

    Patronize

" is much more than a mere synonym for "

    condescend

    ".

A much more accurate definition is this:

"Treat with an apparent kindness that betrays a feeling of superiority."

Now nobody, not even his worst enemy, could accuse Pinza of "

    kindness

". Therefore, he does not "

    patronise

    " anybody.

    What I am is "

    Pharisaical

". Every day I find myself thinking:

"Thank God I am not as these other men are"

. It is I agree a grave sin – especially as today the object of my Pharisee-thought is that Chief Moaner to the Treasury

    Reet Hard

    , who [as

    Ginger

has pointed out] still has given no earthly reason why the Newbury Stewards should have wasted their time and our money by setting the Spanish Inquisition onto Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Hughes over the poor run of

    Labarinto

    Christ alive, Pinza.

    Agreed.

Why not just incorporate the name – ‘The Denford Stud Washington Singer Stakes’ ?

Sponsors will inevitably come and go, but these old race names should be maintained.

    Easy.
They just have to look for someone who’s gone to a fancy-dress party as an air stewardess.

I was with Thousand Stars e/w, he suffered a nasty bump mid race, then Overturn carried him wide.

Don’t think he’d have won, just been closer – but surely he’ll oblige at Grade 1 kevel soon on that evidence.

Like Nulty, I’ve had a coupla quid on Rathlin at 85 because he fit a fair few of the trends, and because this isn’t really a race to be backing the favourite.

Good luck to everyone for the Festival, and may all the horses and jockeys come back safe and sound.
