cue card could easily win this but price is short enough quite like the look of stacks horse magens star each way has to improve alot on bare form and has only ever run on soft ground but the way he won his last race was very eye catching altough it wasnt a great race at the prices he is worth a small each way bet

    Hello,

I am interested in MAGEN’S STAR-does she need soft to heavy ground, if not she has a fine chance.

    regards,

I wouldn’t take 9/4 about a horse in a three grand novice hurdle at Taunton with Joe Tizzard in the saddle, so I’ll certainly be taking this one on.

The jockey has a 4% strike rate in novice hurdles and is a much better rider over fences.

It’s also nine years since a UK trainer outside the top ten won a Grade 1 race at the Festival. That was Tom George with Galileo and Peter Beaumont with Hussard Collonges in 2002.

Since then it’s been all Nicholls, King, Henderson, Hobbs, Pipe, Jonjo, Twister, Howard Johnson and Hen Knight thanks to Best Mate.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Magens Star; very much a dark horse and could have contested the mares race…annoyingly missed all the good prices on her [hardly any value anywhere] and have also backed Rathlin, 50/1 being my sort of price.

MAGEN’S STAR’s price shrinking dramatically, just availed myself of 20/1 (Stan James) whereby it was 25/1 only 10 minutes ago. Just sticking it in a each way perm in case good ground isn’t it’s forte.

Good ground will of course assist HIDDEN UNIVERSE 8)

Like Nulty, I’ve had a coupla quid on Rathlin at 85 because he fit a fair few of the trends, and because this isn’t really a race to be backing the favourite.

Good luck to everyone for the Festival, and may all the horses and jockeys come back safe and sound.

Could weep, because she [Magens Star]was 33/1 yesterday [nrnb], 20/1 when I left home and 14/1 by the time I got to the bookies, so I’ve had to dramatically increase my stake money and have all of two quid on her! If Rathlin gets placed as well I’ll be well happy come tomorrow afternoon.

Al Ferof – is the one for me here the price has been contracting by the hour for this one Ruby rides and will go off in the first 3 in the betting for this he can be forgiven his fall and his 3rd place run over 21f i can see him being there from the off and extending from the turn

The lesson here is "Don’t use the high street bookies"

Magens still at 20s with VC and Bet365.
Had a little £3 bet on her and Dunraven Storm at 25s.
Main bet on this race though is Al Ferof at 9s with 365.

Anyone else find that by this eve you start looking at all the races again, and suddenly all those bets you’ve placed so confidently in the weeks leading up to the Festival don’t seem so sure now!

Hope everyone’s lucky tomorrow and for the rest of the week.
My main tip for this week – Hold anymore bets on Thursday’s races until the day, because rain is forecast to hit Cheltenham a couple of hours before racing starts on Thursday.

How many small UK trainers had a horse with a big chance of winning AP? I am a little concerned about Master Tizzard, granted; and the high head carriage is a bit disconcerting. However, even allowing for that I still make him a true 13/8 chance (or put it another way, only 62% chance of getting beaten). Tomorrow morning Cue Card will be available at 3/1 with Ladbrokes.
The horse has proved himself the best around (so far), and already put up a performance good enough to win any of (at least) the last 5 renewals. Goes on the ground, stays well. If he were trained by Nicholls / Henderson you’d struggle to get odds against (imo).

May be I am biased because I’m already on at 16/1. Will go in again if I can get some of that 3/1.

Am already on Magen’s Star @ 40/1, might want very soft ground, but price was worth taking the chance.

    My 100% book:
Cue Card 13/8, Spirit Son 9/1, Sprinter Sacre 10/1, Al Ferof 12/1, Reccession Proof 14/1, Zaidpour 16/1, Magen’s Star 18/1, Hidden Universe 22/1, Dunraven Storm 28/1, Gibb River 28/1, Marsh Warbler 28/1, Rathlin 66/1, Far Away So Close 400/1, Sheer Genius 500/1, Spanish Treasure 1000/1

I’m going to take advantage of Paddy Power’s offer of ‘money back if Cue Card wins’ and back HIDDEN UNIVERSE in the hope that good ground will bring improvement. I’ve lost count of how many times Dermot Weld has pulled something special out of the fire. On seasonal debut wasn’t that far behind some good horses… Got to improve…

Sometimes you can over analyse – Cue Card has the form on paper and for me is the bet to get the festival off to a flyer.

At a price of 25/1 I think Marsh Warbler might be harder to peg back than many might think, if given some rope on the likely very good ground, it could hang on to finish up with them.

With Hidden Universe, Marsh Warbler and a few other known front runners though, you would hope that it is set up for a showdown between Spirit Son, Sprinter Sacre and Cue Card – At the prices, Cue Card to be finishing the strongest for me – good luck.

    Supreme Novices

    Rathlin

    2pts ew @ 66/1 StanJames (1/4 Odds, 3 Places)

Really like this horse. He’s done all his running on heavy ground but his best performances have come on decent ground. He could be under rated due to his form on the ground in Ireland. He ran very close to Bobby Ewing in a 2 1/2 mile PTP on GF ground. Bobby Ewing is a 147 rated hurdler who beat Menorah but hasn’t been seen in quite a while. He looks a good horse. Rathlin must be better than the market suggests.

Philip Rothwell hasn’t got a great record at Cheltenham (0/16 Last 5 years) but this horse looks better than many he sent over. He reportedly scoped badly after his Clonmel race when Rothwells horses were all sick. He comes into this off a good win at Gowran and the ground will be just right for him.

    Price too big to ignore.

In the general market because Cue Card is my Bismarck.

I like the horse as well but he needs to find massive improvement to finish in the first six let alone three. As far as I recall he wasn’t even favourite to win his maiden hurdle. Although Bobby Ewing did upset Menorah over a longer trip he wouldn’t have had the pace to finish anywhere near in a Supreme. I suspect Rathlin has gone over for the experience as he may one day return as a chaser. The stable have a much more realistic chance with Divine Rhapsody who can still be backed at 20/1.

No doubt he will be a chaser next year but he was still a big price at 66s. He was cantering all over an admittedly weak field last time and like IC says a stronger pace will suit him. He could be anything and by that I don’t mean over hurdles but over fences. He is clearly a good horse and deserves a shot despite his inexperience. He could finish outside the first 6, but the risk vs reward factor in my opinion makes him a reasonable bet. He’s fairly decent at his hurdles for a chaser :)

I might inquire about an Arkle quote after tomorrows race :P

If Cue Card hits 5/2 or better I may have to do my dosh. Otherwise it’s Sprinters Sacre at 10-1 E/W.
