April 2, 2012 at 20:13 #399164HGM,
I’m not so sure he’ll have all the time in the world to get into top gear at all. They won’t be going as fast as in a Gold Cup but they won’t be hanging around on the run to Becher’s first time, and if he goes through the tops of these fences like he can do over conventional ones he could struggle to keep up imo. If he’s in touch at Becher’s second time around he could have a say but I wouldn’t back such an error-prone jumper in the National. He’s never fallen over fences but we saw what happened The Midnight Club (who I fancied strongly) last year when he couldn’t get into a rhythm. Throw in the fact that it took him a while to get over the Lexus and I find it hard to fancy him. If he jumps with fluency then as you say he should be in the shake up, but it’s a big ‘if’ for me.
Fred Winter used to say hunt them round for the first circuit and join the race on the second. That has always been regarded as good advice so I doubt if AP will give a hoot how fast they go to Beechers first time. He’ll be more concerned about getting him over the first half dozen fences in one piece.
He made 5 fairly bad mistakes in the gold Cup but that is hardly surprising as he is slow to warm up and was taken off his feet by the pace set by Midnight Chase and Time For Rupert was suicidal which saw both of them collapse in a heap before the 2nd last.
As fast as you think they might go at Aintree they are not going to go as fast as they did at Cheltenham because if they do they’ll be beat before they start.
I doubt if AP will not have to be chasing him along like he had to at Cheltenham. He can afford to let him do things in his own time and even if he’s 20 lengths behind the leader approaching Beechers 2nd time round I’d fancy he’d still win.
If things go well and he jumps with fluency I’d agree he’d be in the shake BUT I’d doubt if there will be one. If he really took the fences and put in a clear round he has such superior staying power combined with a fair amount of speed that he’d probably win by a furlong
Getting over the Lexus. That would be when he missed the Hennessy and Jonjo said he’ll need to impress in a gallop if he’s going to run…..he forgot to add "I’m not going to give him one"

April 2, 2012 at 21:21 #399180Roulez Cool looks like being a non runner, listed as doubtful on the racing post site [down until 4am
] I did read he picked up an injury.April 2, 2012 at 22:39 #399188This weekend, when you’re in the pub, or just sat in front of the box watching channel 4, raise a glass to the man who epitomises the spirit of the National,…The Duke of Alberquerque, not forgetting his horse Nereo. It’s not about the money, or the TV rights, or the commercialism, it’s man and beast against 30 spruce covered obstacles, the cavalry charge to the first, fairytale endings, memories of epic finishes, horses and incidents. It’s the only sporting event on the planet that makes housewives get their 10 bob out for a bet, office workers organise a sweepstake…
I won’t be around in 2112 but I hope the National still is.
Die-hard romantic

April 3, 2012 at 17:53 #399229Looks like Giles Cross is going for the National according to sporting life. Real shame Denis cant do 10-1 as they get on so well together.
I do think Giles Cross needs a certain type of jockey, if either Paul Carberry or Timmy Murphy became available they would be ideal.
If the rain comes he has a massive chance. I have my three now Giles Cross, Killyglen and Black Apalachi.
Good luck all!
April 3, 2012 at 17:58 #399230Peter Buchanan would be a very good replacement on Giles Cross. He might not have ridden the horse before, but he’s a favourite of mine and is awesome in marathon chases.
April 3, 2012 at 18:02 #399231Bit of rain and even some snow forecast for the North West over Easter, I would expect genuine good to soft ground come the 14th.
April 3, 2012 at 18:20 #399233If anyone on here hasn’t had a bet yet on the National, and you always take notice of the ground conditions when you decide on your picks, i’d wait until v close to the day.
There’s a real chance of continuing unsettled weather right up to the day itself.April 4, 2012 at 10:42 #399265burton port main aim betfair bowl now, although will be left in national entries incase anything untoward happens to ballabriggs

Yes, Paul Nicholls only runner.
Hope so anyway, otherwise I’ve lost another antepost bet.Value Is EverythingApril 5, 2012 at 14:34 #39937910 day weather forecast indicates rain every day from next Sunday, up to and including Saturday 14th, in the Liverpool area.
They may be wrong, but if it is correct, it brings in a few heavy ground specialists. It certainly won’t inconvenience Seabass, who I’m very keen on anyway, and at much bigger odds Le Beau Bai if it gets very wet.

Aye he plodded to 2 Punchestown Gold Cups, a Gold Cup 3rd behind Denman and Kauto and recently to within a head of Giles Cross giving a stone away
