Grew up as a child fascinated by jump racing. My earliest memory is Red Alligator in 1968, would watch all the televised races, anything from the National to a selling hurdle in January at Catterick. By the age of 12 I'd collated my own handicap system. Not even hurdles really, just chases. Remember as an 10 year old correctly picked the first 3 in order in the National, much to the amazement of the adults ! Obviously always wanted my own horse, was going to call it Royal Oak, even had it's colours sorted out. We had a very large garden, and my brother and I built race courses with birch jumps for our bikes ( this wasn't always appreciated by the grown ups - we never tidied up afterwards !)
