Weatherbys say this much:
It should be noted that where a mare is registered as a broodmare with a VII suffix as part of its name (denoting unregistered pedigree), such mares are not eligible to race under the Rules of Racing in Great Britain or Ireland.
https://www.weatherbys.co.uk/Weatherbys/media/PDFs/ntr-conditions.pdfSo not that long ago (probably up until the early 90s), our local pt to pt had a members’ race in which people ran their hunters. Through some quirk of Turf Club rules, the hunters had to be registered, because the race was part of the official card. You could do this by saying that the dam was unregistered, and the horse was ‘said to be by’ whatever TB stallion. This meant you had all these hairy hunters in the stud book. I can still search for them now in the RP! They all had VI after their names, so that’s where that comes from. Then you have Pampered Finch VII (dam of His Song), and she has ‘damsire unregistered’ against her name. Her damsire was Pitpan II. There is some information if you search for Weatherbys Non-Thoroughbred Register, but I don’t think they mention the numerals. I don’t think the VI scenario could happen any more, since there is DNA testing, but I’m not 100% sure of that. Zara Phillips’ Olympic event horse High Kingdom is out of High Dolly VI, who was supposed to be 7/8 TB and won several point to points and ran in the banks race at Punchestown (the La Touche).
Someone should point out to Tony McCoy that anyone could have stayed on the plod he fell off at the Christmas show, jumping about 2ft.

My all time four legged hero.
The first chapter of LPP’s book about him was entitled ‘A Horse of That Colour’. Prejudice against chestnuts is nothing new.No comment from Be Fair?
Giant’s Causeway certainly had some prep for the Classic, in that he was taken to Southwell to prepare. He missed at least one turf race to do so. I agree with most comments above though – AR is going to have to man up if he wants to succeed on dirt.
Spot on with regard to the sire line, Steeplechasing. Justify may have run at 3, but he did one short season (6 runs). Perhaps he was too valuable to continue with past June, after some sort of injury, but his own sire was finished by May of his 3yo career (last win March). His grandsire and great grandsire deteriorated at 3, never won after 2 and went on to become noted sires of 2yo. Another interesting note is that, prior to Justify rocking up at the sales, his dam’s progeny had made 60k or less. None of his expensive siblings since have lived up to their price tag. He also failed a drug test prior to the Triple Crown, which should have ruled him out but was swept under the carpet.
Galileo is dead Andy.
I’m not aware of any specific ‘concerns’, CAS, but we have similar debates to the ones that you have in UK. With the financial support that it receives from the govt (budget Oct), HRI probably have to be seen to be doing something.
Fred Winter to John Francome: ‘Your biggest problem is going to be your weight. What’s the lightest you’ve ever been?’
John Francome: ‘7lb 3oz’.No opinion on Dubawi versus Galileo, Ham. The point is, pick your stat and argue what you like, which you have illustrated perfectly.
Dubawi has 81% starters to foals (Galileo 76%), 61% winners (52%), 13% stakes winners (11%). Without total domination of one stable in Ireland, Galileo would have been sensibly remembered as a top class stallion, not the second coming.
Thank you, Miss Woodford. I had the pleasure of working for him. He was an extremely nice man.
Swynford too – several of the German sire lines now considered super tough trace back to him. There was less saturation of unsound genes in the past though, probably. If Desert Crown rocked up as a NH sire it would not surprise me, sad to say. The pictures of his dam at the sales don’t look great, although she was sold for a lot of money. Pictures can be misleading.
