As regards stallion duties, the market will determine his fate.
Some unsound horses have been influential stallions. For example Mr Prospector delivered speed, class and unsoundness; often as a package.
August 22, 2023 at 11:04 #1660414The days where the Derby winner was top stallion material has been in decline for some time

Mill Reef comes to mind
August 22, 2023 at 14:13 #1660427Swynford too – several of the German sire lines now considered super tough trace back to him. There was less saturation of unsound genes in the past though, probably. If Desert Crown rocked up as a NH sire it would not surprise me, sad to say. The pictures of his dam at the sales don’t look great, although she was sold for a lot of money. Pictures can be misleading.

All the best to him!!!

He was the furthest from being unsound – 6 runs at 2, 6 runs at 3 and 2 runs at 4.
As a 4 yr old after just scrambling home in the Coronation Cup he was suspected to have picked up the virus that hit the yard at the time in the run up to the Eclipse and then a swollen hock prevented the re-match against Brigadier Gerard in the Benson & Hedges (Juddmonte) and we all know that after that he shattered a foreleg when being prepared for the Arc.
Fingers crossed forDesert Crown – at least the latest news is an improvement.
October 23, 2023 at 17:09 #1667890Well, he didn’t make it. It wasn’t as easy as it always seems according to some RP journalists.
May he rest in peace
October 23, 2023 at 17:32 #1667892Just read this very sad news.
The more I know the less I understand.
October 23, 2023 at 20:07 #1667907Such a sad ending…..was keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that no news was good news, just goes to show how fragile these incredibly strong athletes are if they pick up an injury in the wrong place.
Condolences to all connections but especially to his groom.
October 23, 2023 at 20:18 #1667909Very sad news. And not that long after the Derby winner of 2019, Anthony Van Dyck, was lost in the 2020 Melbourne Cup.
To lose two Derby winners due to injury in quick succession is both very sad and rather concerning. RIP Desert Crown
October 23, 2023 at 21:10 #1667910Terribly sad. Reminds me of the time they fought to save st Nicholas Abbey. They are such big, beautiful creatures but very fragile with it. I feel for all the connections of desert Crown.
October 23, 2023 at 22:09 #1667912Sad news for all connections and Racing as a whole.
To win the Derby with so limited experience and from a stable that does not rush them too. All suggested Desert Crown had potential to improve into an even better four year old.
Hope it does not put other owners off keeping Derby winners in training.
Value Is EverythingOctober 23, 2023 at 22:39 #1667913Desperately sad news he was such charismatic horse and much loved by all who follow the sport.
Was hoping he would pull through and go off to stud but sadly not to be..😪Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 24, 2023 at 14:04 #1667948Yes that is really sad news.
I had not realised the injury had become life threatening.
