Zarkava hasn’t been remotely tested thus far and if she bumped into Lush Lashes over anything up to ten furlongs, in the same form she was for the Musidora and Coronation, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see her beaten.

We’ve been operating on a false economy for years, Brown having done a bloody good job in hiding it until now. It’s just unfortunate that the sh*t has hit the fan just as fuel, gas and electricity prices are set to soar.

The rich will still be rich though.

Spacious was disappointing, but James Fanshawe hasn’t had a winner for a while and it’s entirely possible that the firm ground didn’t suit (she’s a little top-heavy).

Having backed the Cheveley filly a little more heavily than was originally intended I was hoping that, if she were to struggle, it wasn’t Lush Lashes that capitalised. Well, you can’t have everything it would seem!

That disappointment aside, Patkai was seriously impressive in the Queen’s Vase.

I don’t think either Ryan Moore or Jimmy Fortune will look upon that race as one of their finest moments.

Is the form of the trainer not a worry – 6 of his recent 9 runners have finished stone last?

Anybody who ‘has the balls’ to voice their opinion leaves themselves open to criticism, but unfortunately McCririck doesn’t understand the meaning of the term reasoned debate. Rather than put his point across, sensibly and with conceivable justification, he immediately vilifies and condemns, almost preaching that what he thinks should be taken as gospel.

Certain subjects suit his brash, Blessed-esque style, but when it is used as a vessel for direct (and unnecessary) criticism – and to satisfy television producers seeking to exploit the ‘controversy factor’ – then it’s not difficult to see why people hold the opinion of him that they do.

Geordieland is a notoriously difficult ride, so getting the horse anywhere near the places in a Group 1 is an achievement in itself, but he’s simply been outclassed by Yeats; I would imagine that there are plenty who would be overjoyed at finishing second to a stayer of the winner’s calibre. And, let’s not forget, he’s beaten the best long distance horse in France decisively.

From a betting perspective day four looks an absolute pig, but there are a couple of horses that might be worth chancing.

The time recorded by Cuis Ghaire (a massive lay for me here) at Naas wasn’t all that spectacular when marked against other races on the card, and with her likely to guarantee a strong pace I’m very keen on Penny’s Gift. She won impressively last time out, is clearly improving and will benefit from a soundly run six furlongs.

I think I’ll be playing Bronze Cannon in the King Edward VII, as well as Spacious in the Coronation (to small stakes), but Age Of Reason is the one that really interests me today in the Queen’s Vase. Mark Johnston’s horses are in indifferent form it has to be said (most of their winners have been big prices though – always trying), but the step up to two miles looks right up his street following a pleasing effort behind Unnefer last time, and there would be few better equipped to get a horse home over a staying trip.

Great to see Yeats win (especially at that price), and even better to see Geordieland running like he actually wants to.

Would the subsequent efforts of Grand Honour and Firth Of Fiftn not worry you with regard to Baycat, Bulwark? Obviously Sun Ship has come out and won since, as has Light The Fire, but with the latter likely to have improved significantly (as Meehan’s always do) for the race is the form strong enough?

All my bets today revolve around South Central and Collection (where Segal plucked 10/1 about this horse from I’ll never know – he was no better than 15/2 anywhere shortly after midnight last night), with Michita a hopeful choice to boost any returns. If those three win, my next post will be from the Caribbean!

He was beaten surprisingly easily, wasn’t he? After Walter Swinburn’s comments on the BBC, and given how well the horse was backed (50/1 in places in the morning into a general 25/1), I was reasonably hopeful.

I tend to work to 3lb per length over 5-7f, 2lb per length over 8-10f and a pound per length at 12f or further, but I don’t know that it’s an exact science.

I guess I’ll have to cross every crossable part of my body now that you’re backing Throne Of Power, marble, we’ll need the luck!

Godolphin did the same with Papineau, David, although they did take in the Henry II over 2m en route.

A pound a length at a mile, marble?

Having looked at the Britannia a little more thoroughly, I’m hoping that Yaddree can set the race up for Throne Of Power. He won really well over 7f at Doncaster in mid-May, comfortably beating Firestreak with the pair well clear, and is sure to be suited by the step up in trip. There is pace on the far side, Mikael Magnusson is a trainer I very much like and I think he could be a fair bit better than his handicap mark of 95.

I’ve switched by allegiance to Michita in the Ribblesdale too, having replayed both the Oaks and her demolition of subsequent winner Rosa Grace at Goodwood (Rosa Grace was given an appalling ride that day by Chris Catlin, but was put well in her place anyway).

If the ground remains good-to-firm, which it should given the weather reports, then Yeats is a certainty for the Gold Cup. If, however, some rain does arrive and offers up ground on the good side (or slower), then Coastal Path will likely be backed off the boards.

I backed Collection for the Derby immediately after his victory at York, so will be having plenty of anything around the forecast 8/1, and South Central looks like a star sprinter in the making following a devastating debut performance at Carlisle (time was extremely good).

Those two, and maybe Changing Skies in the Ribblesdale (I’ve had a quick look at the Britannia and am drawn to Yaddree, but that’s on a brief five-minute flick through the form).

Perhaps not, dj, but he’s crucified Phoenix Tower and Pipedreamer and done so with relative ease.
