Oh and another embarrassing interview by Chapman with Mark Johnston. I’d have told Chapmant to buzz off.

Not sure what McCoy is doing there on Derby day..
Mumbling.

Still not seeing enough of the horses, I only got a chance to get a look at Rhododendron when she was in the parade before going down. It was the only chance I got to see her apart from at the post and didn’t think she looked too happy in the pouring ran with thunder and lightning rattling overhead.

As King Sprinter said above Hayley was calling all the fillies ‘he’ as they went into the starting stalls for The Oaks which was really annoying.

You could have almost have been fooled into believing that you had tuned into ‘Royal Ascot’ today, it was Ladies Day at Epsom and a lot of time was given over to discussing where outfits had been purchased etc etc. AND ..why do we have to keep seeing Ed Chamberlin, Olly and Jason standing in the centre of the paddock talking about the race when the horses are circling around them, we don’t need to see THEM, we want to see the HORSES and they can keep talking all they like… just show the horses!!!!

Yup, I made a post about this, yesterday, maybe I hit the wrong button. They were on air for half an hour before the first race. Apart from at the stalls, the only horses we got a squint at were O’Briens late arrivals, that could have been shown any time, and the utterly embarrassing loud Chapman and the daft Gleeson on fairground steeds. Talk about self-indulgence. Opinion: Olly Bell is the only one worth his corn.
Certainly not.
I used to keep records and work on systems but that was 50 years or more ago.
There used to be a system based on tipster’s naps. For instance, one tipster might get a winning nap once in eight nap selections, with another it might be one in five or one in twelve. Taking any one tipster you started off with a one point to win and if it went down, two points on the next nap doubling up after each losing nap but never exceeding a 32 points bet. Bloody boring but it did win money.
I remember reading about a dog tipster who had a very successful tipping business. He would make a standard charge for his tips with the promise of money back if it lost. He was arrested when it was found that he tipped every dog in the race, thus ensuring he kept the tip charge for every winner, a nice near 17% earner.
Anyone remember the Dagenham dog track coup?
May 30, 2017 at 22:38 in reply to: Winnerless apprentice to ride in the Derby…on a no-hoper #1302735
There have been quite a number of equine fatalities in the DErby, especially in the 1960s when there were some big fields with poor quality runners. After the “pile up” in 1962 I think there was some talk about reviewing numbers and horse ability.
Lets hope she stays at the back.I had never been a lover of ante post betting until I saw a horse I was sure would win the Derby. I took 8/1 on the French horse Angers in the 1960 Derby that became 2/1 SP and I think went as low as 6/4, the shortest price for a Derby I’d ever seen. It broke a fetlock soon after the start and had to be put down. I might try to get a decent price on Jenkins’ horse not being last.
I also remember one of the big staying races around fifty years ago. One trainer had two horses in the race but didn’t have his stable jockey on either, he rode another trainer’s horse that led into the finishing straight. As both his boss’s horses came to challenge, he suddenly dropped back taking all likely challengers with him, he then ran on into a place. Just the way it happened or a well-laid plan?
Each way betting is a bookie scam. They used to pay one quarter the odds for 1-2-3 on 8-15 runners until betting tax was introduced when they payed one fifth the odds. Did they revert to a quarter the odds when betting tax ceased, did they Hell.

Good post Joni though your love of Henry is a great persuasion. I’d email Henry every time Frankel ran and the day of the Sussex stakes I reminded him of 1964, the year Roan Rocket won the Sussex Stake. But it wasn’t Roan Rocket that was important in the Henry story, it was the win in the Goodwood Cup by Raise You Ten, the first big winner almost immediately after Henry was appointed assistant trainer to Cecil Boyd-Rochfort. I had a good on-course day.

Wow – thanks for sharing that. You were on board a few years before me then! I think that must have been 1969 right? 2 years before I was born!!!
I’ve been a racing fan since I was a kid. Even before I reached my teens around 1950 I would have a bet on the big races, a sixpenny bet with the local butcher on the boat race. But I’ve always liked the racing scene, itself and when I was 17 and weighing an enormous seven and a half stone, a guy I knew said he could get me an interview with no other than a friend of his, Harvey Leader; that would be around the time Brian Taylor became his apprentice and turned into a really good jock, especially with two year olds. The story of Brian’s death is quite eerie and for those who don’t know, he was thrown from a horse after the winning post. The very same horse had put a French jockey in a wheelchair the previous year.
I seem to recall Brian was a mate of Lester. I can also recall more of what went on in the sixties than I can remember what went on last week.

You can see Finche’s race here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cEJ4V9V8sU

Smashing looking horse
I’m not sure he’ll be as good if he can’t get his toe in. Good looking horse though.

Yes I did wonder how Henry Cecil would have got on with some of Frankel’s offspring.
I would suspect he would have mastered them or given the owner the opportunity to find another trainer.

Any chance of re-naming the thread ‘The Matt Chapman Show – The Ego Has Landed’? He is out performing himself every day. It is as if he really thinks this is HIS stage. Hard to believe that ITV think his antics are actually promoting racing. It has got to the point where he almost makes McCririck look sane.
I didn’t watch yesterday but today was dire in just about every department, except I much prefer Johnson to Hoiles. Why was Weaver asking Murtagh how to ride Chester?

For the sake of saying something I’ll put forward the Tinklers but should think we’re going back a few decades more. May be time for an additional clue
No I didn’t have the Tinklers in mind thogh I can remember the trainer father of the current Tinkler trainer.
The case I’m looking at is where the father took out a licence after the sons. You’re right about it being decades ago, perhaps four or five decades.
I have to say that I’ve tried to research this question but can’t find anything, though I remember at the time, the dad gave up after a couple of rides when he realised how dangerous it was.

Hoiles repeatedly referring to the troublesome Nezwaah as “he” before the Dahlia Stakes, for fillies and mares.

Nice to see he’s done his homework.

Edit: Quite incredible that they took a commercial break and then showed a recording of the 2:35 from Hamilton instead of showing the race live, as was scheduled, before the ads.
Now it’s funny about Nezwaah. I’d backed her in doubles with Frontiersman and others. I heard her name mentioned as I was looking at the online Sporting Life. I couldn’t see her in the race and after it was over I went to the Life to check. Nothing about her being a non-runner, nor in the Post. I checked several times and have just checked again. The Post is updated but the Life still omits Nezwaah, both in the racecard and the results.

To be fair, she was spot on with her comments with regards her thoughts on the horses pre race [something that Gina excelled at, though]. Can’t believe I’m saying this but I did actually miss Emma Spencer yesterday, although they obviously couldn’t have her working with Hayley Turner.

Pretty simple, get rid of Turner. She adds absolutely nothing . Her most used term , “chilled out”. Argh!

Never really understood the dislike towards Emma Spencer. She was good at her job
I never knew there was a dislike or whether Emma didn’t want the job. But I agree with you. Not only was she good to look at but she knew how to get the most out an interview and she never screeched like Plunkett. Talking of interviews, I think it was Gosden who showed signs of wanting to walk away, today, whilst a bookie told Chapman to look down the line for 7/4 on the O’Brien horse. Once again he was being a pest.

Early days but Cumani does not look the answer here on this showing…..she’s just an over polished talking head with very little passion or insight coming through.
Dettori had clearly done no homework and is trading on his name and didn’t lift things.
As if it needed it Chapman is still spoiling the whole thing with his total inability to bring any gravitas to absolutely anything or whip up excitement in the way McCririck used to do,even if it was in a marmite sideshow way…..McCririck could do it Chapman can’t.
Bell and Chamberlain are just about acceptable hires or this gig but maybe not in their current roles but everybody else represents lazy, unthinking recruitment by ITV.When I first saw Cumani, I thought it must be ladies day, I’d have much preferred her in her ‘mucking out’ garb. I wasn’t watching when Dettori was introduced and when I did see hime I thought it was the Muppet Show. Chapman…..I clear the room of anything heavy before I switch on. I think if they’re limited to who they have, I’d put Bell in Chamberlain’s place and Chamberlain out to grass, along with the ITV stooges who selected the cast.
Yet another poor presentation and they don’t even seem to be aware of it.
