I jut watched the race again. Cue Card came down after jumping 4 fences that were in the same ‘sun line’ as the one he fell at. The two leaders jumped that fence foot perfect. Going by the shadows of the horses the sun at its strongest was coming from their left.

I didn’t think Cue Cards was what I’d term a fall, it appeared to me he didn’t land foot perfect then stumbled.

I never knew here but I knew the owners of Turnpole, Marello and a couple of others. They were absolutely loyal to Mary for all the good reasons. Remarkable woman, remarkable trainer with an enviable record by any standards.

I think the press may not have the full facts since I’m fairly certain Mary took over from husband George.

Too much talk off seedless grapes and their benefits on the Opening Show and Rishi struggled to keep it together.
Hurry back Oli and send Rishi and Matt back out in the cold as far away from the food as possible.

    And the camera.

I’m surprised Simon Nott hasn’t yet linked to his latest blog.

Not guaranteed to go down well in these parts!

yes terrible isn’t it. It’s like attacking those lovely dealers for handing out that heroin. how dare they!

Well he does say, at the end, “did I get it wrong”. Perhaps the direction of attack should be legislation which allowed machines in betting shops. Race betting gives you a chance of winning and they don’t call them bandits for nothing. In the 70s and 80s, perhaps moreso in the 60s, betting shops were a place for social gathering apart from gambling. Staff were generally raceing knowledgeable. Now they’re like clinics with staff who know nowt about medicine, how it works or patient care.

I think that’s the one and though I didn’t find it I know it’s here somewhere. I’ll stop an immediate search but check back if I find it and it’s not the Mason book. I’ve seen thousands of racing books at auctions including rafts of stud books. I don’t know how you research but there are book sale sites like http://www.abebooks.com but you need to know the precise title or search by author. There’s a book auction in my nearest town, this week. It’s the part contents of a well-known bookshop in Lincoln. The old guy died suddenly having been carrying boxes of books only the day before; he was 93. Here’s a link and you’ll need to click on the download button for the 26th:

I’ve seen plenty of racing stuff in there, previously.

Thanks Joe, that must have been fascinating. I have to admit I’ve never been there but have been hooked on the race since I was six when one of the earliest childhood memories was formed, it was 1967!

After Rule The World won I realised that in none of my many books on the National nor on the web is there any detailed continuous, accurate and up to date record of the race starting from 1836. I soon discovered the online British Newspaper Archive and have spent most of the time since compiling by hand from all available sources the facts for each renewal including a description of how each horse ran, where departed, etc. Plus course changes for and a discussion of each race which contains my foolhardy attempt to compare and rate the best performances!

I learnt how to create a website, setting up a skeleton of it, and am a couple of weeks away from being able to start the typing in. When that is done I’ll commence on indexes for horses, trainers and jockeys, however, I want to add a general sentence about as many entries as possible so will be doing more research as I go. In my wildest moments of optimism I hope to launch the site in two years but three is probably more likely!

Somewhere in this house I have a book giving a summary of Grand National winner. From memory it was written just over 100 years ago. I bought it in auction many years ago. I’ll try to find it but since I have around a 1000 books on all manner of subjects, it could take time or it could take 5 minutes; I’ll start the search, tonight.

I thought responsible gambling was ensuring bookmakers had a better life than their punters.

Mike Chapman is locally advertising all over the place for experienced work riders. Even an inexperienced rider will be better qualified than anything he sends to a racecourse. B-)

Ps, LD73 I’m glad I’m not the only one who used to run home from school to catch the Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup. I could it in eight minutes. Then, not now 🙂

Back in the late fities I had a credit account but no phone at home. I was ever interested in any George Todd horse that got backed within a couple of minutes before the off. I’d be out of the door and a 200yd sprint to the nearest phone box and wanting to murder anyone who was using it. :yahoo:

Well I did win money on this one and quite a lot. !962 Cesarewitch won by Orchardist (Bill Williamson) but then David “Flapper” Yates, jockey of Golden Fire decided to object. I can’t find footage of the race but I never gave Golden Fire an earthly chance, despite the other horse clearly leaning on him. Whips were flying and no doubt words were exchanged but after deliberation, the stewards reversed the result and yours truly collected £125. An exciting race but not just because it turned out in my favour.

I agree about Noel Fehily and I’ve tried hard to think who my best “hands” jockey was… probably the late Brian Taylor who showed it exceptionally with two year olds

He was one of those I always felt was on the job and am glad he went out on a kinda high not riding Nathra for Gosden. I’d not be surprised if he doesn’t take up an advisory role.

If he was such a good presenter maybe he wouldn’t ask such inane questions and I’ve never thought of him as a particularly good form judge, the best he could come up with regards the Redcar 2 yo trophy today and something he repeated was favs had a good record in the race and if Darkanna was to win she would be the 4th fav in the last 10 years to win. Maybe he would been better off going with the second favs, although the same number of winners the last 10 years they have a £7.33 level stake profit as against only a £1.20 profit for the favs.

All the main presenters on ITV regularly come up with similar stats as though they have some significance to the race we are about to see.

    [/quote]

All too often the stats have nowt to do with anything. When they tell you that a three year old has only won the race in the past ten years, it ignores the fact that out of say 100 runners, there have only been four three year olds…..or only one grey has won it in the past twenty years. I’m wait9ing for the time when one of the clowns tells us that a chestnut has never won the ‘greys’ race.

Is Khalid Abdulla in any way responsible for planning the matings or is there a team of “experts”. I have wondered how modern large scale studs plan them.

They probably do it how they do it with rabbits, input into a PC. I seem to recall Brigadier Gerard came via that route except in those days it would probably have been a room-sized mainframe

For me the breeding is more interesting than the racing in many cases. It is totally fascinating once you get to know about all the blood lines and not in the least pervy. It always amazes me how little some bettors know about the breeding of the horses who are carrying their money and how it would often help if they did learn the rudimenteries. For instance you can often rule a good few horses out of the classics on their breeding alone.

Breeding was probably more a consideration five or six decades ago and beyond. It may be breeding is more refined nowadays, coupled with improved groundsmanship but in years gone by there were horses that rarely won onfirm or soft going if they weren’t predisposed by their breeding. That said, this thread goes to show there are mating problems brought about by close-breeding and posing difficulties in pairing off that isn’t going to bring about “the insanities of a purer race”.
