Apparently a back injury has done for him and he will retire.
Good solid jockey in my view.
Never really recovered from losing the Gosden job, just as Gosden was coming into his prime.
Seemed under used latterly and almost became unfashionable.
I wish him well in retirement.October 7, 2017 at 18:08 #1320600Good jockey, never really worried about jockey issues when he was on one I’d backed
October 7, 2017 at 18:22 #1320603Sad but not surprising news as I noticed he wasn’t getting the amount of top class rides than when he was with John Gosden. Jimmy was my favourite jockey on the flat, I could often trust him to ride a winner for me when I backed him. I believe his wife died a few years which must have been terrible for him. Maybe ITV will sign him up, they could do a lot worse. All the best for the future Jimmy.
October 7, 2017 at 19:15 #1320610Best of luck and congratulations to, Jimmy Fortune.
77 Group wins in Great Britain and Ireland, including 14 Group 1’s.
October 7, 2017 at 19:19 #1320612+1 for the Jimmy Fortune fan club. I can’t remember ever feeling disappointed by how he’d ridden a horse I’d backed.
He continued to ride well despite his personal tragedy and physical issues. Hope he stays in the game in some way.
October 8, 2017 at 08:34 #1320650He was one of those I always felt was on the job and am glad he went out on a kinda high not riding Nathra for Gosden. I’d not be surprised if he doesn’t take up an advisory role.
October 8, 2017 at 09:16 #1320653I always liked him but whether that’s just because he happened to be on some of my best returns over the years is up for debate (most recently last year’s Cambridgeshire).
He seemed to me one of the most reliable jocks in the weighing room and achieved more than most with a Classic win and a fistful of Group 1’s to boot.
Remember that Raven’s Pass QE2? Completely out-rode Johnny Murtagh on Henrythenavigator.
October 8, 2017 at 09:47 #1320660Glad I saw him at Newmarket yesterday when the jockeys came into the parade ring for the Sun Chariot to parade under their colours for the cameras. Frankie was standing right next to him and getting quite emotional hugging and kissing him, now I know why.
Would have been nice to have seen him out with a winner yesterday on Nathra as think it was closer than Gosden let on between the fillies Nathra beaten only a head by Persuasive but neither were going to get close to Roly Poly who seemed to have more in hand at the finish.
Good luck and enjoy your retirement Jimmy.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 8, 2017 at 22:46 #1320765Good, solid jockey. I recall one of his poor (by his own admission) rides on Winker Watson for Peter Chapple-Hyam on the unbeaten 2yo’s 3rd start. I had been following Winker Watson and had had a good bet at 11/4 as he was looking to do the hat-trick. Jimmy left him with plenty to do and a win looked highly unlikely but the horse picked up well and scramble home in the last stride to win a short head. A mightily relieved Jimmy came in to be interviewed, where he admitted the horse got him out of trouble big time.
Playful Act sticks in my mind as a good winner for me with Jimmy on board. I backed her for the Oaks ante-post but she didn’t come to hand in time. Thumped but 2nd in the Irish Oaks, her form tailed off but she was good at 2YO winning three times.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
