He doesn’t get home over 2 and a half miles, so excuses for previous defeats. Let’s see how he does at Leopardstown before writing him off for the Supreme.

Felix Desijy impressive today in a race won in the past by Vautour, Douvan and Kicking King. Will be the Gigginstown No. 1 horse in the Supreme, and now that they’ve finally twigged that the horse has to be allowed to bowl along in front over the minimum distance, he could go from strength to strength. Will be much shorter than 20-1 on the day.

Thanks for running the competition VtC. Could you please let me know (via p.m.) how I can make a contribution to the prize fund?

Master Tommytucker fractured a bone in his knee at Chepstow and is out for the season.

A number of the Hobbs novices that ran disappointingly in the last week or so have scoped dirty, been put on medication and transferred temporarily to another yard. This would probably explain the below-par performances, including one I have a share in which ran abysmally at Bangor last week. Absurd to imply that Johnson was in some way at fault.

A temporary blip and bears no relation to the low-level virus which afflicted the yard last season.

The mare Make My Heart Fly was bought cheaply by Elliott out of Ali Stronge’s yard and did nothing until he sent it over to Perth to win a poor Amateur Riders’ hurdle off a mark of 88. It then rattled up a sequence of wins at Perth and Sedgefield, netting around £16K and showing marked improvement for each run. Mark ruined? Well, it contested a listed race today at Gowran, finishing 2nd and probably running to a mark of about 135. Another 6K in the bank, but far more importantly she now has black type. So who cares about the “ruined” mark?

If I was one of the group that owns her I’d be deliriously happy!

No, twisted his knee (unwisely) attempting a flying dismount. Still not fit to ride today.

Jamie Snowden’s theory as to why Ardkilly Witness suddenly refused can be found here.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if Health & Safety requirements were a major contributor to this accident which, bad as it was, could have been much worse?

The local Stewards were bound to have held an Enquiry into this race but, bizarrely, there’s no mention of it on the BHA website.

Totally agree with your comments droffats. Perfectly legitimate for watchers of the sport to criticise poor rides, but Nick is the one always seems to get picked on, most of the time unfairly imo. Worth noting that the horse was coming back after a season off with a leg injury, so was never going to be subjected to a hard race 1st time out.

Hi Highflyer, I saw on twitter over the summer that Empiracle was back in, how are things going with him? Would be great to see him back on a racecourse.

Can’t say for certain as I left the partnership when the serious injury occurred, but the hope was that he could eventually come back as a pointer/hunter-chaser. Given that he’ll be 9 rising 10, that seems the realistic option.

Maybe you don’t like him, but at least you should do him the courtesy of spelling his name properly.

And of course when he rides a peach (as for example on Art Mauresque or Marracudja), there will be silence from armchair jockeys as it doesn’t quite fit their preconceptions.

Anyway, I thought that slagging off jockeys was the prerogative of the Betfair forum?

Summer jumping is here to stay, like it or not. It keeps courses like Perth, Worcester and Newton Abbot viable.

But I agree that the season needs more of a break and from a personal point of view I would prefer to see this break in mid-winter, say for 6 weeks after January 1st. This is a time when many NH horses have an MOT, flu vaccinations, gastric ulcer treatment, etc, and so wouldn’t be racing anyway. With the warmer climate we’re having wetter winters, and there are many abandonments during this period. And giving horses hard races on virtually unraceable ground cannot be in their best interest.

Of course any such proposal, however logical, would create a hue and cry and I couldn’t see all the different factions involved in our sport ever reaching agreement on it.

We all moan when obstacles are by-passed, but today’s accident demonstrated that the dangers from the low sun are all too real. It wasn’t just Annie that jumped the elongated shadow, L’Unique did so as well and with the same result. Both falls were bad and could easily have been fatal.

Captain Cutter died of a heart attack while in his box.

Not that it affects the arguments either way, but this statement is untrue. Captain Cutter fractured his pelvis in last year’s Spa Hurdle and had to be put down several weeks later following complications, thus becoming the 5th Festival fatality.

Strangely enough, JP’s only other Challow Hurdle winner Backspin (trained by Jonjo O’Neill) did die of a suspected heart attack while in his box.

Horses in training over the winter months will all develop ulcers, to a greater or lesser extent, for the reasons given earlier. A horse of mine disappointed badly at Doncaster on Friday, never travelling or jumping. We had a gastric scope done this morning and he has ulcers at level 3 (level 4 being the worst). He’ll now go on a month’s course of Gastrogarde (expensive!) and be ready to race again in the Spring. The vet advised that we should scope him for ulcers each year in mid-season.

Excessive stomach acid will cause painful heartburn when a horse gallops and jumps, and could often be the explanation for an unexpectedly below-par performance.

No-one is perfect but I said when he won the Foxhunters back in 2010 on Baby Run that he would become one of the best of his generation. Hopefully I will not be proved wrong and he certainly deserves all the success he gets.

I’m afraid you’re confusing the siblings. Baby Run did in fact win the Foxhunters, but in 2011 and ridden by Willie. In the previous year he ran in the same race partnered by Sam and guess what….he was unseated.
