Agree that water jumps are unnecessary and anachronistic, and a hazard mainly because horses get no opportunity to jump them other than on the racecourse. Which makes it all the stranger that the BHA have approved one for the new Windsor jumps course, sited just off the bottom bend and out of sight to spectators. They ruled out a return to the old figure-of-eight course on safety grounds, but a water jump seems fine.
I’m sure the hubristic going report that put out on on the BHA website — “great covering of grass, perfect, safe jumping ground” — will only have added to their embarrassment.
Ah, but if Brown had won that election there would have been no Brexit, which has had a far more devastating impact on the UK economy than any of the events you mention. A report by Cambridge Econometrics has given an estimated loss of £140 billion (as of Jan ’24) with an economic output of 6% less than if the UK had remained in the EU. Our politicians (and of course those who voted Leave) don’t like to be reminded of these uncomfortable facts.
The two hurdles in the straight at Aintree were not jumped in the FIRST race on yesterday’s card run at 12.25.
I know we’re in winter but nevertheless the sun is still at its highest point at 12 noon. This is getting crazy!
I would gladly swap 4 of mine, but here’s what I’ve decided:-
Out. Kyntara (last chance saloon today — will probably start winning now)
Chacun Pour Soi (seems to have lost his way this season)In. Galopin Des Champs
Dysart DynamoA precarious lead Bobby, this competition is a 4-mile marathon and we’ve only just cleared the first two fences! I’m sure I’ll soon be back in the pack where I feel more comfortable anyway.
No surprise at all to hear (from the trainer) that Shan Blue has damaged his neck and won’t race again until the spring at the earliest. Let’s hope that fall has resulted in nothing worse than muscular damage.
I really enjoy this competition Bobby, but whittling the selections down to 10 seems to have been more difficult than ever this year.
Anyway, here goes:
A Plus Tard
Bob Olinger
Chacun Pour Soi
Envoi Allen
Hitman
Honeysuckle
Kilcruit
Kyntara
My Mate Mozzie
ShiskinI just consider it a privilege to have been acquainted with such a modest, unassuming, ever-cheerful gentleman — a true champion in every sense. Was so looking forward to him riding our horse in the Aintree bumper on Saturday. If only he’d postponed his retirement for a week…he could have gone out on a winner!

OUT:- Fiddlerontheroof and Minella Indo
IN:- A Plus Tard and Chacun Pour Soi
Great competition Bobby.
Thanks again for running this excellent competition Bobby. I’ll send across the usual in the next couple of days.
