Seemed very busy today – more so than the Open Saturday, although that may in part have been because the enclosures weren’t divided today.

In value terms £20 admission today reads very well by comparison with a Club badge for one of the 6 race cards at the Open.

    Equitrack I’m with you 100%

I love looking back at them and seeing that I saw a Grand National winner in a novice hurdle at Bangor etc etc.

My bet was on Hoopy who came from somewhere the other side of Stepaside to get third :( Looks like he would get further but might be interesting in the Kim Muir or the NH Hcap Chase. Also did the Halfway Bar who unseated.

    Good analysis though Gerald.

To be fair, Stow looked quite a useful recruit today, but BJ is getting quite a run of seconds in the book now….

They both put Sydney Sling away with ease anyway.

I do most of my betting on course. Have never used Betfair so its all backing, no laying. Tend to look for value and avoid short prices.

This year I’ve been racing 74 times, latest being Hereford today; currently £79 down for the year. I can live with that – its a hobby. Was a bit down last year and a bit up the year before that. So about ten days to get this year into profit.

Biggest priced winner backed this year; Silver Jaro at 66-1 in the County Hurdle.

I find myself wondering what the future of jumps racing is at Leafy. Of the few fixtures they retain, they seem to lose plenty. I don’t think it’s ever really recovered since the AW was built. Would it be sensible for them to focus more on early/late season or even summer jumping?

You have it about right Nero; if I felt JT had ridden as well as he possibly could and got beaten then I’d have no issue; but personally the race left a nasty taste in my mouth and not for the first time as regards one of these contests.

To be fair Noel Fehily didn’t cover himself in glory either as Nadover came from miles back to finish fastest of all.

Contrast the inability to save the main races with the way last weeks Punchestown card was moved on a couple of days in its entirety. A typical response in Ireland and yes, I know the programme is more amenable to it over there.

But surely the two main races could be moved to Newbury or Ascot if people actually pulled together.

I’m probably well wide of the mark with this one but Gleann An Sagart caught me eye in the 3:05. His recent form is absolutely nothing to write home about but I do remember Dusty Sheehy regarding him as one of his best young horses a few years ago.

We noticed this one too. I’ve been after the holy grail of a 100-1 winner for ages and at least this one gave us a decent run for our £1ew!

Having just got back, I’m really glad my on-course impression was shared by others here – having backed L’ami was less than delighted by the ride given. When out in front was all but yanked back into the pack about half a mile out – and that was before the other shenanigans.

As others pointed out not the first time this has happened. Freneys Well’s second to Spot at Punchestown two years ago was hilarious….

Obviously the handicapper is not far off the mark this time but nonetheless far enough to stop a very good horse winning two good races on the trot and that’s not taking into account he’s probably still improving.

As the Pboro chase is not a handicap that’s not really relevant. If you win a Grade 1 you get a Grade 1 penalty in conditions races. End of!

As it happens if Snoopy had been fluent at the last two he would have won quite readily. And what a grand horse he’s proving to be – I wouldn’t rule him out of a place in the King George given the questions over others. FWIW I’ve thought for a while his optimum is possibly 2 and 3 quarters so Kempton might suit.

Personally I love bumpers – people tend to lump on whatever the fashionable stables are running and a good perusal in the paddock can often lead to a bit of value on something else. And it’s great when something you see win a bumper goes on to much better things.

In Ireland the bumper is often one of the hottest betting heats of the day – but their is a tendency over there to value ‘a buzz’ more than anything like form anyway!

Missed That was another champion bumper winner who went the right way. Pity he died so young, as he could have filled the current hole at the top of the Irish staying chaser scene.

Quite surprised nobody on this thread has mentioned Royal County Star. His win in the Troytown last season suggested to me that he had plenty in hand, and taking into account the difference between the Irish and English scales he is not that badly handicapped.

Achilles heel is jumping, but if he’s fit and puts in a clear round he won’t be far away.

Looks like Chelsea Harbour exacted revenge on DR by causing the interference that ended up with Nicholls’ pushed through the rails…

Grand run from Ballistraw – good shout. Just edged my ew hope out of third.

Did Black Apalachi to small stakes in the National so had to try and recoup stakes today. Wasn’t impressed to see he was Pricewise pick but having seen the 20s shrink to 12s by lunchtime when I put bet on hadn’t expected to be on the wrong end of yet another SP collapse so let the bet roll.

Some of the betting markets on northern racecourses seem to be incredibly weak.
