After Hold the Pin missed the cut by one I’m a bit deflated, but will have a bit on The Halfway Bar at 25-1.
    And Bridge Run at 20-1…..

    -787 WHERESBEN 9 11-0 Seamus Fahey BF60
Likes it soft, likes to gallop, and likes 3m, so I suppose that is enough reason to back him. 3 lbs higher than when won a Nov H’cap Chase at Navan in March, with a bloody long name, but 24k to the winner.
He’ll recognise a few backsides here, as he has been beaten this season by Operation Houdini, Oscar India and Chelsea Harbour.
All 8 victories have been Feb-April, but I’ll put a fiver on him now, just to give me a reason to back him the next time, and the time after that.
[edit: okay, I was a little bit squiffy when I placed that bet. I was influenced by a remembrance of Beyer. The horse has been beaten by 47, 43 and 17.5 lengths in his last three starts, and I’m taking the latest beating to be an indication that the horse is returning to form. The difference is that Beyer uses the technique in low-grade, 12 runner affairs on the dirt, in which he is trying to scratch around to find a horse to bet. I’ve just done it in a 30 runner race in which there are plenty to back anyway. ]

A victory for Stella Artois.

    Please don’t tell Andy Beyer.

[edit: for anyone who has looked askance at this, and thought I backed a horse because it has lost its last 3 races bt 47, 43 and 17.5 lengths, there is a certain amount of piss-taking going on.
I obviously like the horse, because he is only 3 lbs higher than when he won a valuable novice h’cap chase. I was just trying to find a reason I could publicly state for backing him, when at first he seems not to have any recent form.
The point to make, which is obvious, is that if you are going to back a horse that is 59/1, you can’t have everything in your favour, you can’t tick all the boxes.]

Fair play Gerald, drunk or not! I thought he had a bit too much weight but the jockey’s claim helped! Looked like Nicholl’s horse would win by ten turning in.

Yes, thtat’s waht I thought as well. Wheresben came from nowhere, (well, at leat form outside the commentators commentary.) I had about a tenner on Osako D’Airy as well. Because of panic stations, I think I bet a total of £70 or so on the race, but its always nice to pick a winner "out of the blue". A Christmas Day well spent for once.

A most eye-catching run from Hoopy in third IMO- though perhaps that’s easy for me to say given I’d backed him!

    POST MORTEM
I hadn’t realised Osako D’Airy faded all the way to 6th – must be injured. Apart from him, Wheresben and Hoopy none of my horses finished in a good position, though Dreux and Dashing George were prominent for a long time. There are a lot of horses to take out of the race, lets just hope they don’t all run in the same race.
Poor old Vic Venturi has put up a career best performance, and only come second.
Hoopy will be wanting races with a fast pace, but I suspect those will be the types of races he’ll be aimed at anyway.
Both the mares will be worth looking at next time.
I’m very pleased with Operation Houdini. I just hope I’m right with my assessment that he’s had too much racing, and that a couple of months rest will put him spot on for the Grand National (£14 @ 271.65) (I know he wouldn’t make the field at the moment; if he gets balloted out, I’d get my money back. The OH is likely to give him 130 instead of 126 – he then needs to pick up a penalty to make the field.)
[Steeplechasing is changing, I think it is just a matter of time before a 7yo or even a 6yo wins the GN. I seem to have a split brain: when I look microscopically at a horse, I don’t see why it can’t win the big one, but when I view the situation macroscopically I home in on the 9yos & 10yos rated 140-145 or so, who are well-in at the weights since they’ve been announced.]

My bet was on Hoopy who came from somewhere the other side of Stepaside to get third :( Looks like he would get further but might be interesting in the Kim Muir or the NH Hcap Chase. Also did the Halfway Bar who unseated.

    Good analysis though Gerald.

Horror story here Gerald- tried to back him at a double-figure price in-running and the bloody computer decided to crash…..

    Ye of little faith.

Though because of other things, I only just caught of he was running a few minutes before the start.
