it would be more interesting to debate if best mate was better than mill house..he wouldnt get within 20 lengths of arkle anywhere

IMO he’s not even as good as SMB was at his best. chelt was never SMB’s best course and it was some feat that he actually won a GC..i have him a few pounds better than BM

while we’re on the subject what do other people think of the way he is campaigned? while i see there point ive always thought racehorses were for racing. hen even said he ‘needed a holiday after that’ ! what after a 3month rest and then a canter round cheltenham? yeah he must be knackered! why not run him at aintree or even the hennessey next yr instead of finding a micky mouse race for him..lets see the bloody thing race for gods sake

was largely underwhelmed by the CH and GC due to many horses not performing but i have to agree with jim here iriss gift was V impressive. i didnt think he had a chance beforehand but to just coast along behind the fastest 2m4 horse around and THEN to stay on to challenge baracouda was exeptional. it’d be almost a shame if those 2 go chasing next yr as id love to see a rematch

it has to be said though that with regards to the GC it is rapidly becoming something OTHER than a showpiece for the best STAYING chasers. fast ground round an effectively tight track ensures few get into it and it wasnt much of a spectacle this year. i think best mate would face a lot more challengers over teh last over 3m+ round newbury on softer ground. newburys far better suited to 3m chasers to show their stuff and next years GC is already as good as over..whats teh point of that??

    absolutely gutted

at first i blamed the connections for sticking the blinkers on as i doubted very much this would help his jumping and he still jinked right even at the early fences. i espcially doubted the wisdom round cheltenham which must be the worse course possible for him. on later reflection though has this horse ever jumped properly he’d have been the best for some time and i can understand the connections wanting to try everything to that end..i just hope they’ve learnt something from this for the future

    luddites all!! :)

think how many days of crap racing there are..now think how many days of really good racing there are..do you really not want more of the latter?!?

ok it may be partly for the wrong reasons but RACING IS CHELTENHAM..i’d be happy with 5 days…make sure EVERY horse over 120 is running in some race or other at cheltenham..that’d do me fine

am i the only one who thinks DB actually won on merit today?!? to my eyes he beat him fair and square which he was entitled to on his best form. he doesnt run many races to that level but when he does ive always felt he was at least the equal of baracouda. wouldnt normally bet on him dur to his inconsistency but 14-1 was taking the p**s

im an NH addict yet i barely watch the flat racing

i think this is for 2 reasons 1) the specracle of the jumps..3 or 4 good horses coming to the last knowing one mistake will cost the race but still time to fight back on the run-in..i just dont get that sense of power and gallantry from watching the flat
2) the passion..flat racing is too much about big money and big egos..jumps is still about fun..cheltenham is truly a festival of racing and a true celebration of the horses with the people who love them
the big flat meetings appear to be all about improving stud fees

    esc,

the way the rest of the field closed in on ITT and telemoss suggests they did indeed weaken on the run-in
personally i think bacchanals performance 2years ago was marginally better but thats just my opinion

baracouda is undeniably talented and yes he is the best there is around at the moment and that lucky for him cos he really doesnt look happy when he’s in front

i still maintain that JDCs win over the 2 mentioned was equal on merit but there’s something very wrong with that horse this season and it’ll be a long while till i trust it with any of my money again

nothing at all too suggest ITT and telemoss improved from their last run and the fact they both weakend at the end of this race and yet still finished where they did just adds support to my credence

    interesting…

when JDC beats it takes time and telemoss 9L giving them 4lbs i get told thats not good enough form to win a stayers

yet when baracouda/bannow bay bt the same pair 13L off levels apparently they are great horses

i agree, eb, that yes there are more important things to worry about, and the emotions will fade BUT at the same time it’s equally as true that a lot of people felt sadness when they heard the news of valiramix. i believe that’s a very genuine emotion borne from a ‘normal’ human reaction to seeing any living thing with a name die in front of them, also out of sympathy for the connections (in this case an elderly gentleman who will be feeling terrible about now) and lastly out of sadness that we will never watch this horse run again

all this is perfectly natural and i dont think particulary hypocrtical..if you like horse racing you accept that animals die but you that doesnt mean you can’t feel sorry for them..if you own a cat/dog and see it get run over then of course you are going to grieve and other people witnessing it would feel sad too..but we still own pets, watch them die AND feel sad when it happens..

if people want to come on here and share emotions then why not..if ktt doesnt like it then why does he read it??

he never had a chance yestersay..i think they ran him knowing he was past it but maybe just maybe once he got running he’d be able to perform

but i think they knew it was a long shot and charlie was always going to pull him up as soon as possible..i think they just wanted him to bow out on the course in front of all his fans and pulling up 2 hurdles gone while still in front of the stands might well have been discussed

i’m not particularly having a dig as i understand their motives but i feel sorry for anyone who lost money on him

ktt, of course we care about the best horses more..why shouldnt we? we have much more emotional attachment in the better horses as they give us more pleasure and therefore on a purely physiological level we will grieve more..its exactly the same when someone famous dies..its on the news and everyone feels sad..just take dianas case…when someone slightly famous dies..sure its a blow but noone really cares long term unless you were close to them and its the same for horses

esc, geos was good enough last year at levels to finish ahead of valiramix…

don’t you just find it a bit odd that after valiramixs win the handicapper raised him 9lbs but when rodock mirrored the performance he chose not to raise him at all off 155??

and no i dont think TFF has improved at all i pointed out somewhere else exactly to what figure’s hes beeen running this year and he is exactly what he was last year..a moderare handicapper whose connections have realised it’s more profitable to place in sub-standard conditions races than face a tricky task in handicaps

i will he admit he is admirably consistent though which is why i keep pointing out the rodock run.

in my book…if it’s not form then it’s hype..valiramix hasn’t shown improved form yet..therefore he is indeed a hype horse

if he only produces the form of his last run he would indeed do well to finish in the 1st 3
esc you keep saying val’s one race is enough but as ive pointed out rodock ran to just about the same figure as val against TFF so how come you don’t think he’s gonna win the CH?? PLUS you didnt think the exact same form was good enough when barton did it last season

you have mentioned several times that both pipe and someone else have claimed that valiramix is a better horse this year and that..without SOLID form is hype..pure and simple

now i dont care if you follow the hype or not but you hypocrasy surprises me

daniel made a very good point about you clingling to the fact HLLwas beaten that day and if you really believe that TFF is better than HLL than i despair
sure he’s been more consistent this year than last but it doesnt mean he has to run to form in every single race and if the evidence suggest he didnt then why question it??

of course i dont think boss doyle will win the stayers but it wouldnt be the biggest shock in the world if he ran on into 3rd

i was just showing that yet another piece of form by baracouda was open to question and definitely not what is required to win at cheltenham

esc..if he just turns up in that form then he’ll see boss doyle running away from him :)
